CHICAGO, Dec. 21. Mrs. Richard J. Oglesby of Elkhart. 111., widow of a former Illinois governor, is in a hospital here- rpeoverine from- the fourth
operation in six months. All of the
operations were for appendicits, dui because of complications, it was impossible until the last one to remove the appendix. SHOOTS HIS BROTHER. ALTON. 111., Dec. 21. Eleven yearold Joseph Brady shot and killed his brother, aged 9. in their home here while playing hunting.
COAST TO DEATH.
PEORIA, 111., Dec. 21. Edwin A. Bohl, 18 years old and-Henry Bremer, Jr., 16. were killed when their coasting sled ran into an automobile. FRENCH AGENT FOUND DEAD
DEFECTIVE STERILIZED.
CHICAGO, Dec. 21. "I want all the world to know of this operation," said Dr. Harry Haiselden today, following his sterilization of Edwin Brussel. an alleged defective, 22 years old. "The operation was performed in five minutes at the German-American hospital in the presence of newspaper reporters. The young man's parents had consented to the operation."

ROTTERDAM, Dec. 21. Heavy cannonading was heard west of the Hook of Holland in the North sea on Sunday. The continued firing indicated that several ships , were engaged, according to reports received here.

CHICAGO. Dec. 21 The. Chicago police were asked today to investigate the cause of a fire which destroyed the Giorgi hospital at Gary, Ind., Imperiling the lives of all patients. The hospital occupied the second floor of a frame building which was destroyed.
OLD RAILROADER DEAD
The National Association for Women Suffrage has come to the conclusion that it can win the vote best, by working harmoniously inside its own ranks. Therefore the election of Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt as President to succeed Dr. Anna Howard Shaw was not contested at Washington last Friday, Dec. 17. Mrs. Catt has been promised the support of a united body of suffragists. In the above picture she is shown at the top with Dr. Shaw, the retiring president, below.

BICKNELL, Ind., Dec. 21. Elmer Cross, 40, a miner, is dead today from injuries sustained when the cage at the Sump Bythe mine fell and crushed him.
BERNE, Dec. 21. The government of Switzerland is considerably irritated over a systematic pro-French propaganda that has lately been started, seemingly under the auspices of the French government, throughout the western cantons. French scientists nnd writers, some of them members of the Academy, have started lecture courses in Geneva, Lausanne and other cities and it Is openly stated that the only purpose of these lectures is to attack the population of the French speaking part of Switzerland still closer to France.

field, for sixty years auditor of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad, is dead at his home here. He was 90
years old, and had retired as auditor six years ago.
ALEANDRIA, Ind.; Dec. 21. "There are no boobs on Broadway." Such is a saying often heard in the metropolis. Debaters at a local society meeting here, however, saw fit to remind those arrogant folk that Broadway is but one of the streets, when it was decided that the city man in the country is greener than the country man in the city.

moved Rev. A. E. Munger and William Braden from the board of safety. Fred Savoree, the third member, resigned
Saturday. Jake Frisz, I. S. Mehegan and Oscar Kamtmann were today ap
pointed on the new board. It is under
stood the mayor had frequently quar reled with both Munger and Braden.
EATON. O. Dec; 21. With the consumation of a deal late Monday, the Eaton Democrat passed from the hands of ex-Representative Earl H. Irvin to Arch' R. Raney, well-known Preble county publisher. The sum involved is $4,300. The transfer followed negotiations which had been carried on during the last several weeks. The Democrat is the official party
organ in the county, and has been owned by Irvin for the last twelve or
thirteen years. It was established forty-eight years ago. Irvin has other interests, being employed by the federal civil service commission as a collector of taxes. Much of his time lately has been given the position he now holds. Raney is editor and owner of the Mirror at New Paris, but probably will arrange for the sale of that publication. With his family he will become a resident of this city at an early date.

TRUCK KILLS SOLDIER. DRESDEN. Dec. 21. After being severely wounded In three battles. Walter Baer, a soldier of Briensnitz. recently returned to bis native town and on the same day he was run over and killed by an auto truck.

Adolph Rldenour waa granted a divorce from Clara Rtdenour, to whom he was married May 24. 1906. in Kansas City. Mo. Thy are the parents of an 8-year-old daughter. Wilful absence furnished grounds upon which Hattie O'Keefe was given a decree against Joseph tVKeefe. Her maiden name Douglass, was restored. Neglect and cruelty were charges advanced by William II. Everding In proceedings against his wife. Alda Eunice Everding. whom he married April 24. 1914. and lived with five months. The defendant was given an allowance of $375.
