CONVICTED CHIEF ASKS NEW TRIAL

CHICAGO, Dec. 16 John J. Halpin, suspended chief of the Chicago Detective Bureau, convicted by a jury last night of taking a bribe fo prbtect clairvoyant swindlers, will appear in the criminal court Saturday for the hearing of a motion for a new trial. If a second trial is refused he will be sentenced to serve from one to five years in Jollet prison He was convicted of taking $500 from Barney Bertscne, head of a clairvoyant trust.

INSANE MAN ON RAMPAGE

BRAZIL, Ind., Dec. 15. Jacob Barra, said to be demented, has held local authorities who sought to arrest him on an insanity warrant, at bay for several days, and still remains secure in his stronghold. Barra, with a shotgun in hand, may be seen from day to day standing at the window of his home, ever on the alert to warn some wouldbe intruder that to cross the treshhold means Instant death. Barra's brother called on him Sunday, but was warned that if he attempted to take his gun away from him he would be shot. Barra was at one time an inmate of the Southeastern Hospital for the Insane.
