he Onchastened Woman

No woman whose emotion rules her can rule the emotions of another. Any woman who is capable -of deep emotion and of holding it in leash is capable of conquering the emotional natures of others. A Caroline thinking is far more dangerous than a Caroline feeling. , "I want you to succeed and we shall find a means. Oh! you must get that

stumo immediately." went- on Mrs. Knolys with aquick change of empha8iS. ..'..;.-. Her right-about-face dazed Lawrence so that there was nothing he could reply. He was readjusting himself slowly and in that readjustment there lay a consciousness that would drive him in the end to be loyal to one woman but which? "You can't work any longer at my house-inow my husband arrives today,' went on Caroline in a low voice. And very absently Lawrence replied, "Good!" Mrs. Knolys contrived a smile. . ,"A little less enthusiasm, please." "I mean, then I can get his O. K. on the plans," went on Lawrence boyishly scrambling about in the morass in which he found himself. "You'll get your first installment tomorrow. You've got to draw up plans of an Italian country house for Edwalyn Millette." . "Has she decided?" asked Lawrence back on firm ground again. "She will. She has money, and I can tell her exactly what she thinks she wants," said Caroline, humorously. "There, I can help you, too. You'll need your studio, I know exactly how we'll furnish it. I know just where I shall sit and your" your tea Ugh! and we won't have bells like that awful one that's ringing. "That's Hildegarde. I ll tell her of Jhe studio," cried Lawrence, boyish and happy, once more. Mrs. Knolys admonished him to leave it to her and he agreed even as opened the door to admit Miss Ambie who excitedly demanded a chance to talk to Mrs. Sanbury. To this the host readily agreed since he felt it almost time for Hildegarde to come and play hostess. Susan was nervous almost to the point of incoherency but since she was a woman of words a torrent of them gushed from her now. Susan Arrives with a Lot of Innuendoes. "Carrie, I am sorry- But I haven't slept! I can't take any more responsibility. People are talking about you and Lawrence. Of course I understand but "If you give your time to thinking about what other people say you'll nevfr have time for anything else," interrupted Caroline.

But Susan, having decided on a course of action, could not be stopped She was like all soft, formless women in the quiet stubbornness with which she swept along when once she had formed a conclusion. She had now elected herself to be Caroline's savior. That was ber mission and not Caroline herself could stop her from righteously attempting to perform it.

"But people know that your husband's been away They see you and Lawrence together everywhere" Caroline Interrupted her brightly, much more amused at Susan than fearful of the situation. "There's comfort in that. Just think what they imagine when they don't see us." "My dear, you can't stop wicked tongues from wagging- Of course I've tried to defend you all I could People are saying that you have lost your head over this young architect whom you have living with you in your house. Only this morning I overheard Mrs. Craig discussing you with that , Foray the woman at ; the dressmaker's. That's why I felt I had ' to speak to you at once. Everybody's talking"1 "Everybody has nothing else to do," said Caroline lightly. . 8uean Stares at the Empty Apartment. Suddenly Susan began to look nervously about the empty apartment. She had very little imagination in any situation save one' where she was frightened. But then fear ran riot and as it galloped, dashed her lover a sort of scenic railway of pictured terrors. "Where is his wife? Perhaps she's heard things and means to be rude!" "Rude to me?" The idea amused Mrs. Knolys tremendously. "She couldn't be!" ?You know Lawrence tried to dis

courage our coming. What can you and she have in common?" went on Susan in a mental flurry. Caroline smiled meaningly. Of Hildegarde she had no fear and she did not mean again to find herself in a position where she need be afraid of herself, unless when Lawrence carried with him some memory of that moment of abondon- that should make him demand another. "Nothing," replied Mrs. Knolys to her friend's question. "Lawrence is inside already. When she realizes that he can have nothing in common not even her well, the rest is easy," and Mrs. Knolys laughed boldly, but with such a metallic glint in the eye and voice that it did not escape Susan's suddenly sharpened perceptions. Miss Amble's frenzy of fear for what people were saying turned suddenly to wild alarm for what Caroline was going to do.

"Carrie! You are up to something mad! I haven t Men you look or act like this, not elnce Italy!" Caroline laughed recklessly . and with an abandon of feeling greater than Miss Amble could ever know. An Impish expression of mischief came across her face. She . rather liked annoying her good, stolid Susan but she much better liked the thought of bow she was going to annoy Lawrence's equally good but less stolid Hildegarde. And back of it all was a reckless ness of cost a scorn of cost and an insolent daring that made her sure that a world which had never been able to make her pay would not now be able to make her pay. To Be Continued. .

CHILDREN' MOB SANTA

HUNTINGTON. Ind.. Dec. 16. When G. L. Steele, a local merchant, appeared -at his store In Santa Clans garb and started to pass out a Christmas gift to each one of four hundred school children, he evidently forgot that two bands were Insufficient to handle such a gathering. . Impatient at his slowness, the youngsters took matters in their own hands. When the smoke of the battle had cleared away, Steele was a sorry looking spectacle. His Santa outfit was almost torn to shreds and that remained of the stock of Christmas gifts for the children was a few scattered pieces of candy and a number of empty candy buckets.
