iam praise is mm FOULKE AS TRANSLATOR OF SONGS OF PETRARCH
fHJgh praise is accorded William Dudley Foulke by newspapers and periodicals of this country-and England co his book entitled "Some Love Bngs of Petrarch" which he translated, annotated and published with biographical introduction, recently. 'Among those which comment most warmly in favor of the work are the London Times, Glasgow Herald, New Yrk Son, Philadelphia North Ameripaii, Buffalo Courier, Pittsburg Press, m'dianapolis Star. The Independent says: "William Dudley Foulke has done scholarly and jautiful work iri "Some Love Songs
of Petrarch," while the Boston advertiser says the following: "Dr. Foulke has done an admirable piece of work here in selecting for translation from the 366 poems in the 'Canzoniere' those best adapted to reproduction in alien words; and he has shown excellent taste in adhering to the original form where feasible and departing rrom it where necessary. And, recognizing the discreet and praiseworthy modesty of the translater, we believe he has done extremely well in shifting the Italian lyrics to the less flexible, and less musical English tongue."

AWAIT AUSTRIA'S REPLY.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9. Officials today were awaiting action by Austria on the demand that it disavow the sinking of tlfe Ancona with a very pessimistic feeling. There was a general belief in administration circles that the Teutonic power would de
cline, at least at the outset, to meet the views of the United States in this
respect.

HOPE OF EXTENSION FROM . DECATUR LINE
TAKES ON. NEW LIFE
Announcement was made In Fort
Wayne today of the appointment of 8. W. Greenland, of.. Fort Wayne, who
is general manager of the Fort Wayne & Northern Traction company, to the
general managership of the new organized Fort Wayne & Springfield Traction company, which was recently purchased by C. H. Word en, of Decatur. The Fort Wayne & Springfield line, which operates between Fort Wayne and Decatur will virtually be linked up with the northern line. Emphatic denial is made, however, that the Fort Wayne & Northern Traction company has bought over the south line. The new manager will endeavor to put the southern road on a paying basis and this will be done, he believes, by close connections with the Fort Wayne & Northern line. Negotiations are still pending for the purchase of a right of way to Richmond. The land has been surveyed and options taken on much of it but the extensions have been delayed on account of lack of funds. If the Decatur line is Joined with the Fort Wayne & Northern line, it is believed that financial backing can be secured for the extension. Plans are already on foot for an extension to Portland, thirty miles south. "
EAGLES COMMITTEE ORDERS 600 DOLLS
Christmas will be a merry one for every child in Richmond if the present of a doll or a top and a big Christmas tree which every y.oungster can call his own will delight childish hearts. The Fraternal Order of Eagles at a recent meetipg appointed Robert Hart, Harry McBride, Albert Morel. Charles Ashenfelter and Otto Morrow a committee to provide entertainment for the little folks. They have ordered enough dolls and toys of all sorts to present to 600 children. Every boy and girl who goes to Eagles' hall on Christmas day will be given a present and a box of candy. A nice fancy box will be filled to the brim with sweets. Music will be given all day and there will be speakers who will tell funny stories about some of the experiences Santa Claus had in delivering all the toys and other things all over the world. Every child in the city is invited to attend on Christmas day and receive a present, and if any stay away the committee will be disappointed.
KEEP FINGERS OFF WHEN BUYING MEAT
Meat, unless it is covered and protected, will hereafter not be. fingered and examined by prospective purchasers at meat markets and other places selling meat, according to an edict laid down by George McKinley, city inspector of weights and measures. McKinley has begun a tour of the city visiting all meat markets, ordering the proprietors to place the meat either in the ice box or out of reach of those who would pick it up and inspect it. He asserted the practice of fingering the meat is unsanitary. TWO OFFICIALS APPEAR BEFORE STATE BOARD
Mayor Robbins and City Attorney Bond went to Indianapolis today to appear before the state utilities commission on some business pertaining to the city. "I can not tell what the nature of their business before the commission is, because I was not informed," President Bavis of the board of public works said. COLORED MAN ASKS STATE FOR PARDON
An appeal has been made to the state board of pardons by friends and relatives of Robert Purtell, colored,
