leading German newspapers in. which

it was stated that "the mailed fist

will be applied to American aberration as soon as this war is over, and in the

meantime Germany will show patience

with the Americans."

" "The maintenance of our national

life ought to be closer and dearer to

every heart In America than it is now," said Mr. Foulke. "A person can not really realize the gravity of the situation until he visits Europe and sees for himself and hears for himself the sentiment against the United States. It is not only the number of men in which this country is deficient, but in the deficiency of the department. It costs the United States one hundred times more to maintain the system than it does Switzerland, . where the efficiency question has been met. Money should be spent at the direction of military experts, and not by party politicians." . . "Arbitration with out preparedness to back it is ridiculous," he said. "Any great nation will violate the neutrality of the United States if the United States is not strong enough to prevent it. This country stands in the midst of the worst conflagration of the ages, but still American politicians are crying 'war is obsolete in America' "It Is true that this country is large, but its heart is small and that is

the vulnerable part. A - German- staff officer made the statement to an American during the early part of the war that. 400,000 men could hold the entire United States . Three percent of the territory of this country is north of the Chesapeake bay, and in that territory , lies half the wealth of this country, the executive center -and 25,000,000 people and, practically : all the ammunition plants. If this territory were held, the United States would have to cry for peace at any cost. This could be ddhe by Germany with half the army that is now holding France. ' "People are howling that when all of the countries emerge from this war they will be too weak to enter another. That is a wrong conception. A nation is never so strong as it is immediately after a victorious war. The victor in this war will be stronger than at the beginning. The fact that 10 percent of any European army could lower this country is a fact that is staring us in the face. v U. S. Incurs Enmity. , "Neither one of the principals in this fight is doing its duty toward us. Germany is slaughtering our citizens and England is blocking commerce with Germany in strict violation of all

He said that at no time in its history has 'this country been more open to Invasion that at present. Mr. Com stock spent several weeks at Fort Sheridan training camp last summer, and for this reason, he said, he was able to judge, perhaps better than the, layman, just what it means to train the average American citizen into a efficient soldier.

SAVAGE -WOMEN -; HEALTHY The savage lives in the open, eats simple foods, knows nothing of household drudgery or social life, gets plenty of .sleep and exercise and Is perfectly healthy and strong, but the civilized woman Is a slave to heme duties and society, often becomes run-down nervous and physically unfit to be a companion or wife. 'Our local druggist. Leo H.'Fihe. has a reliable, non-secret remedy that Is a boon to such women. Its component parts being peptonate of iron for the blood.. the nourishing properties of beef peptone and the medicinal extractives of fresh, healthy cods' livers, all dissolved in a delicious native wine. It Is really wonderful how rapidly weak, run-down women are built up by its use. Adv.
