The girl got. suddenly to her feet so
that she might face mm. on a certain
level of equality. "I'm going to be
married, Hubert to Michael Krelin
"I wish you all the luck In the world
Emily," said Knolys, and held out his hand. It. was a. queer ending (o their lore story -but there would - be - no whimpering, no protestations, no re
proaches. - Thoroughbreds know bow to answer to the lash. The girl could
not dismiss it quite as simple as the
man. though it was she who made
dismissal necessary.
"I've no reproach to make you, Hubert, and I don't want you to reproach
me, or feel any bitterness." The man
turned away suddenly away from the
honest eyes that would never again
kindle .with love for him. "What we gave was a free gift from both a free gift and no regrets. Hubert, say you
forgive me. ' "There's nothing to forgive, Emily.
What we gave was a free gift We've been good chums for a long timeend you've never allowed me to aive you anything a man likes to do something for tbe woman for wbom he
cares most" Hubert Exacts One Premise from Her.
"That was our agreement, Hubert
A free gut and no regrets."
"Yes, but I want you to promise me
this. If you should ever get into a blind 'alley, and need anything a
friend or money ...... if you
should need it without strings -t want you to think of me. I'd like to feel you'd do that much for the sake of
Auld Lang Syne."
The man's eyes were tender and
kind., Emily Madden knew that she
was getting a loyal friend. How loyal
she did not guess then. "All right I promise." she said quietly and, held out . her hand. "Good' bye.", ; -. s:r:
Knolys spoke very quietly as he
took her band In both of hie. "Krel
lln's a very lucky fellow." Emily
laughed uncertainly laughed because
that best masked her tears. "Ill call you a cab," concluded Hubert In a
very matter of fact tone.
But Emily knew that she must get
away and quickly. "Never mind. Don't come with me, Hubert. I'll run right along," she cried. And so she went out of Hubert Knolys' life, but not forever. Nature objects to finished stories. She forces us all to deal over and over again with the recur rent facts and factors of our early life. Knolys stood looking after the girl until the slam of the front door seemed to put a period to the Incident. Then hie shoulder sagged disconsolately and he walked mechanically to .the table where rested the envelope Emily had brought to him. He stood looking at It and thinking how fine end brave and simple Emily. had been. She had done the square thing by him to the last. And then quite without melodrama she had taken herself out of his life. , Suddenly his mood changed. A startling idea arrested his attention. He looked up as if the better to vision his inspiration. A look of malicious
satisfaction distorted his face out of Its well-bred tolerance. After a minute he mastered himself, and swinging back his shoulders with an air of absolute satisfaction be walked over to
the stairway and called very pleasant
ly: "Oh, Caroline! Caroline, I'd like
to see you for a moment." Caroline Comes Down at Hubert's Request.
"Are you alone?" Caroline's voice
came floating back.
sua pleasantly, tne nusband re
plied: "Yes, oh, yes." "I'll be right down."
While he, waited Knolys paced the room, letting confident anger master him and more completely at every step. When at last he heard the
swish of Caroline's approaching draperies he controlled his humor and stood with bis bands behind him and his whole poised, taut body expressing exultant exasperation.
As Caroline came into the room she
stood triumphantly for all the social
amenities. Her spotless white gloves expressed savoir faire, the angle of
her severe hat, with its floating veil, bespoke smartness temperd to beauty,
her. dainty vanity case and bag of jew-
eued-set platinum Indicated eelfish luxury.
She brought with her an atmos
phere of impersonal breeding that seemed like one fleck of blue in a thunderous glowering sky. There was
almost insolence in the very air of
detachment with which she was pulling1 on one spotless glove. "Rather an ordinary person, wasn't she?" she asked lightly. "Did you settle it?" "Or moment." said Hubert curtly, his -v5i e in contrast to the extreme .courtesy with which he drew forward a chair for his wife. "Susan is awaiting me for luncheon. I'm afraid I can't stop," replied Mrs. Knolys, poised for instant departure. "Very sorry," said Hubert decidedly and in a tone that brooked no de-

Famous Beauty Tells Hair Curling Secrets
"I cannot too strongly condemn the use of the hot curling-iron," says Rita
Moya. "It means death to the hair eventually. Moreover it is entirely unnecessary. Tbe hair can be made beautifully wavy and curly to any extent and In any form desired,, merely bj using a simple thing as pure silmerlne. This perfectly harmless liquid should be applied to the hair with a clean tooth brush at night In the morning you will find that a very beautiful natural wave and curltness has resulted, and the effect will last a
I considerable time. "The liquid silmerine is very beneficlal and is not sticky or greasy, j Neither does it streak tbe hair or I stain the scalp. You need not get 1 more than few ounces from your drug
gist. The best way is to divide the front and back hair into from four to six strands and to moisten each strand thoroughly from root to tip." Adv.

'I wish you all the luck in the world, Emily," said Hubert.
nial, "I shall have to have a few moments of your time." "Oh!" The insolence in Caroline's light tone was studied now. Lightly, and one at a time, she dropped her gloves Lnd platinum fripperies on t'ae table. Lightly, and with the pouting sweetness of a spoiled child, she dropped her own swaying body to poise on the edge of the chair Hubert had set for her and then presently she inquired, .'Well?" 3 "Very sorry, but I'm afraid I'll need some of your time this afternoon," said Hubert, taking his stand before her. - . The Scene Threatened to End in a Row "What for?" "The Customs Office," replied the man, distinctly and quickly. "Oh, no; you ventured to . criticize me you asked me to leave It to you I do. I leave it entirely to you" "You do not! " . thundered Knolys, losing all control of himself. "There is about six thousand dollars duty for you to pay!" "I? Perfectly ridiculous! I settled it. Of course if you" "You settled it, eh?" broke in Hubert angrily. The discussion between the wellbred Knolyses seemed about to degenerate into a very vulgar scene. But suddenly Caroline assumed a tone of polite sarcasm fully calculated to madden and exasperate her husband. "If you were fool enough to let that woman"- . ' . But now Hubert contrived " also to. make hs tone smilingly pleasant that the poison of his next words might be all the more insidious. "If 'that woman' treated you as you deserve" "I think I treated her very well," laughed Caroline, basking in the memory of the two hundred dollar bribe given and accepted. "It was only out of consideration for me that she" "Oh, for you!" sneered Caroline. "Yes, for me. If 'that woman didn't happen to be a friend of mine you might be publicly disgraced by now and so might I by having the woman who bears my name in the Tombs where she belongs." Hubert Calls the Turn on His Wife. "A friend of yours," laughed Caro
line, with a mixture .of denseness and indifference calculated to a nicety. "Well, really, Hubert, I must say you have strange v friends a woman who would use her friendship to extort from you" - Caroline's manner was as virtuous as a copybook maxim, and her tone was the one the Sunday school para
gon employs for the benefit of the superintendent. Never before had she found Hubert so easy to bait. Really
this -was- - too delicious!:" - - . -,
In the midst of bis rage Hubert had a gratifying vision of how Caroline's
pride' and indifference must crumple
before actualy knowledge. -
"Listen - to me!" he cried, holding his emotions in leash that they might presently - leap to full expression. "Your trunks are in the hands of the appraisers. You've been caught in a
ridiculous He, and she" j (To Bo Continued.)
