Before a- systematic compilation of ' figures had been made today of the receipt and expense of the producs tlon of "The Toy Shop," the musical '" comedy given under the auspices of the boys' division of the Y. M C A. at the Oennett theatree Friday and I ; Saturday, a rough estimate Indicated D to the promoter that the show had not . been a financial success. - j. J. Somervllle, secretary "of the V boys' .department of the association, a before an official accounting had been - taken, -was of the opinion that If expenses had been cleared, the proceeds to be used to buy new books for the boys' library will not amount to more than $30. . The expenses, exclusive of the cost , of the rental of the theatre,, amounted to about $100, and the aggregate attendance at all three performances 'was approximately 750. About "260 people had., paid! admissions for Friday night's performance, about 200 per- ' sons attended the Saturday matinee, ; and nearly 300 were present Saturday night. . -

MERCHANTS FAVOR MUNICIPAL MARKET
Interest In the proposal to erect
a $25,000 market house on South Sixth
street to replace the Inadequate building , now In use Is Increasing, not
only among merchants , but , among
country people. Business men believe a municipal market would be made a paying proposition, and that the money expended in its construction would ultimately be returned to " the city. They also declare that it would be the means of bringing more people to town .during, .the. morning, and that more money would be spent at home Instead of with out-of-town concerns. An organized attempt will be made to create a strong . public sentiment favording the change, according to Omer Whelan, ;. a South Sixth street merchant. . .

GARAGE EMPLOYE MAKES CAR LOCK
Patents have been granted to Otho D. Bowers, foreman of the mecbanloal department of the Central garage, -on a device for- locking the magneto and batteries of automobiles during the absence of the owners. Several .machines will be equipped .with the Instrument this week and will be given a thorough try-out in Richmond before , being placed on the market ' - ; Mr. Bowers has been working bh the invention for several years. ; In fact, so certain Is he of its success that he is getting estimates on the cost of manufacture on a large. scale. .
FOR AUTO EXHIBITION
Merchants on South ; Sixth street would be .willing to furnish free gas to heat the large teat, under 'which it is proposed to hold Richmond's automobile show some time next March. This was Indicated by Omer Whelan, originator of the plan for the show. Although weather would probably be Inclement at that time of the year; Mr. Whelan said the use of numerous gas stoves would keep the interior of the show tent amply warm. : Although North A street has been suggested as an available location for the tent, - objection was raised because inacessibility.of business houses houses would make it hard to heat. If the show.. Is - held - on South Sixth street .gas -would be furnished by the merchants from their connections. An organization : to- promote the exhibit will be perfected shortly ' after the holidays. vr
