, : ' ;' YNOl8. V;Caroline Knolya, wlfe of Hubert Knolya, capitalist, la coming borne from Europe. Hr husband prepare for her coming. Caroline's bosom friend, Susan Arbrie, rashes Into the house to tell Mr. Knolre that Carolina is in trouble with the customs officials... While he la wondering what to do, Caroline herself appears, thinking she has settled the difficulty. : She greets him cooly. Caroline informs him that their marriage stands .as a Temple of the Gods of Convention and incidentally refers to a past : incident of his life which precludes his getting a dlrorce from her. likewise she reminds him that she never over steps the bounds herself, so that he never will have grounds to free himself on that score. Caroline has been Italy with Miss Amble and Lawrence Hildegarde Sanbury. Hildegard is interested in slum work. , The Sanburys appear In the Kholya liouse, while Hubert is still there, and Caroline pretended to be glad to see Hildegarde Banbury. Meanwhile Mr. Knolys learns new details about the Italian trip. Y ANNA LISLE. It had been Hildegarde whose money had enabled him to go abroad and meet Caroline Knolys. It was Hildegarde to whom his gratitude naturally flowed, and it was for Hildegarde he wanted to succeed. A man never feels quite a man unless he. has the money with which to purchase gifts that shall be tribute at the feet of the woman he loves. "We'll have a jolly job introducing Queen Victoria to the Renaissance,"
he cried, sweeping the room with critical artist eve. "You've plenty of
room; that is. If you let me smash the conventional partition." " .
"I always like to cmash conventional partitions, provided the outside walls
remain intact," smiled Caroline, meaningly. "Have you explained to Hubert,
f But it appears that Mr. Knolys had

three dlmentlons from a sketch, and Caroline rather sneeringly suggested that the architect would have to build
models before her husband could see,
and then suddenly a great inspiration
came to her there was an empty
fourth story- to- the house why
couldn't the models be built there?
That suggestion solved great diffi
culties for young Banbury. The tene
menu hardly afforded him a place to
. build the models and most assuredly he had not the money to spend for
them.
Tact is an over-vaunted quality
now In oraer to oe unkind, as witn a , great show of kindness she made that K. excuse about wanting to consult Hubert and left the Sanburys alone.' Hildegarde had not swung back to her
: sane, nomal viewpoint. ' Caroline's
drop of poison was affecting - her
sweetness, and she was too conscious of her own peculiar chemical process to dare attempt to interfere at all In
Lawrence's plans. And. her hurt was
to become greater and greater as Law fence exclaimed;
"You don't seem to realize what this dob means to me! Money! that what

"Yes now everything I want mon
ey money to be free to do things money to get things for you.' Do you
think I like to see you weiring rags
like this"
With a quick pain Hildegarde in-
tempted. "Oh as for me"
But obliviously Lawrence went on,
"I'v had enough of the tenements! I've never told you" ., "Larrie!"

"There's lots that I could say, Lar
rie"
"Yes, I know, but got to nail this
job. We're broke, that's all. Here I
get a place rent free, materials on tick with Lawrence Sanbury, I-N-C. Upon upon the signs the signs. Hildegarde,
here, take your rags and run."
The more quietly for her grave pain, Hildegarde asked, "Shall I wait lun
cheon?"
"Hang luncheon, I'm going to eat this Job." Larrie Refuses
to To Swayed.
But Larrie was not to be moved. Youth has a way of assuring its world that there are many more days to come, True enough for the constructive masculine viewpoint, but bitterly sad for the woman's heart that lives only in Its present and fearfully faces
the future.
. Lawrence held out his wife's furs to her shabby things they were, of worn edges and matted hair. "There will be lots of days like this coming. Don't be silly Hildegarde. Here here she comes. Just say good-bye." And there was nothing to do except for Hildegarde to make her awkward excuses quite unaided by any further exhibition of tact from her hostess, and to go back to the tenements. - Lawrence followed, but he paused perplexed, exclaiming aloud, "By jove! What makes a fellow a brute sometimes to the woman he cares?" Mrs. Knolys might have informed him that It was the woman who cared for him but instead she pouted a little and, smiling through narrowed eyelids, she said slowly and softly, "It's the artist in you, Lawrence that is instintlvely unscrupulous to anything that hinders its development." But Hildegarde won't hinder me!" cried the boy with a sudden flare of loyalty toward the woman he loved. "Not Intentionally, certainly not. I'm so sorry that we .couldn't agree about you." "But . she must see how much you mean to me, and"
"Perhaps ybifve been too frank with
her." '
. "I never conceal anything from -Hildegarde!' boasted Lawrence to a tone that was fairly a challenge to Caroline to give him something to conceal. She chose to he quietly thoughtful almost philosophically impersonal for a' moment. All the greater contrae when the tone should warm to the personal note. iy.''-:l-r "You stand' at a crossing,' ; Lawrence; the one road means the old limitation and the - commonplace the other leads to freedom and opportunity, it's difficult to choose, because she loves you so dearly." "Of course she does," agreed Lawrence, responding to the Judicial rather than to the feminine note. Caroline smiled and went on lightly. "Wherefore it's quite natural that she should resent any one having the pow
er to do for you what she would like to do but can not. ... I feel that way myself if" "If what?" Caroline studied for a moment and considered her reply. She wondered if he expected sentiment. "If I loved you the way she does. If I weren't as ambitious for your great work." "But she wants me to do big work," protested Lawrence, boyishly. "You feel things in you that she has never dreamed of," began Caroline in
the tone of a mystic seeress. "That's why but I oughtn't to make you con
scious."
"What -Is It?" asked Lawrence, responding unconsciously, but naturally, to the situation the woman was cre
ating.
With a show of reluctance she went on. "That's why you arent at your
best with her. Now there, I've said it.
"But I haven't had the chance of really explaining to her all I want to
do, and"
But now Caroline threw scruples aside and plunged into the very midst
of the situation which she was so elab
rately creating. She trusted Law
rence to follow her. .

for their work, for they know full well
Prevent Diphtheria. A sore throat is a ' good breeding place for Diphtheria germs. Protect your children by never neglecting a Bore Throat. You can wisely depend upon TONSILINB. Give Tonsiline upon the first appearance of Sore Throat don't give Diphtheria a chance in that throat in its weakened condition.
