WORKING JURY OVER TIME. SHELBYVILLE, Ind, Nov. 30. When Circuit Court 'Judge Blair learned that certain members o! the petit jury had expressed contempt for a juror's task by characterizing it as "soft," the judge brought about a slight change in their opinions. After the jury had deliberated all night on a case, it was immediately sworn in try another. A verdict was reached in the afternoon and within fifteen minutes the jurors were again placed in the box for service. o m an synopsis..!Caroline Knolys, -wife ot; "Hubert Knolys capitalist,:: 1a -coming home rrom Europe.." Her husband prepares for her comings Caroline's bosom friend, Susan Ambrfe, rushes into the bouse to tell Mrv Knolye that Caroline is in trouble, with the customs officials. While be is wondering what to do, Caroline herself appears, thinking she has mettled, the difficulty.; She greets htm coolly. Caroling informs him that their marriage stands as a .Temple of. the Gods of Convention and incidentally . refers - to a past incident of his life which precludes his getting a'' divorce from her. Likewise she reminds him that she never overstep's the bound herself, so that he never will have grounds to free himself on that score. . . Caroline has" been in - Italy with Miss Ambie and Lawrence Sanbnry, Hildegarde, is interested in slum work. . .- . The Sanburys appear in the Knolys house, while .Hubert is still there, and Caroline pretended to be glad to see Hildegarde Sanbury. Meanwhile Knolys learns new details about the Italian trip. . - - "Oh, it was wonderful 'for Larrie to be with you. You were eyes to him in Italy." . k.f . rLet me present to you Miss Amble, mierrupted Caroline pointedly. "She was with us too." i ?- Mr.. Knolys was 'giving the conversation very careful attention, in spite of the. fact that his manner suggested an absorption In other things. ; 1 Hildegarde was :' frankly surprised and went immediately, to Susan; "Oh, were you? Larrie wrote me you were taken ill in Switzerland and that he and Mrs. Knolys went on alone." - Susan floundered - about nervously for a moment under the searching eye of Caroline, and then recovered herself with somewhat the same gasp a dying fish gives when it is thrown again into the water. "Ob, dear, no I mean I it was nothing really serious." "I hear you've recovered," said Hlldegrade gravely. "Oh, perfectly, thank you. I didn't miss much of the trip; you see, it was really only" Suddenly Caroline noticed the intentness of Hubert's gaze, and a nervous little fear came over her lest her knowledge of the existence of Emily Madden might not prove so very useful, after all. At one and the same moment she dismissed the thought and Miss Ambie. "Oh, Susan it's nearly twelve. You might hail a taxi and settle the matter of servants for me since you couldn't do It by phone. The club for lunch. One o'clock. You really must hurry." And Susan hurried. - Suddenly Mrs. Murtha who had been standing smiling like a beneficent goddess in the shadow of the doorway, was compelled to voice her sentiments a sort of welcome home for Hildegarde's errant husband. "Ah, it do be pood to see them together again, eh?" "Did you want to ask me anything?" asked Caroline, with a frosty dignity which quite failed to chill Mrs. Murtha'e friendly ardor. "If it's a chambermaid you want, my daughter Agnes" "Wouid you mind closing the door?" asked Mrs. Knolys, and added cuttingly, "I mean behind you." Mrs. Murtha might have failed to catch Caroline's meaning had she not happened to catch her eye. "Oh, yis m'am," said the old woman, arranging the matter of the door according to directions. "Do I understand you run an intelligence .office?" asked Caroline motioning Hildegrade to a chair. Large natures have a certain splendid unawareness of the fact that they are being snubbed. PAYING A DOLLAR LESS ENABLES US TO SELL FOR A DOLLAR LESS r It is as simple as A B C to understand why we are able to sell furniture for.less than some other stores. ; v It isn't the fact' that we are not making the same margin of profit as other stores, it is. simply in the fact that through our associated buying with seventy-five of the country's largest stores our merchandise costs us less than if we bought this furniture individually. Buying it for less, we naturally can afford to sell it for less! ' . . v It Is to your interest to investigate this before -Investing in furniture. "Yes Miss Ambie and I will come some time together." Quite failing to make note of any lack of enthusiasm; Hildegarde made her invitation a definite one for luncheon-In the. co-operative dining room. .Something in her manner attracted Hubert ' into - the' conversation, and slowly and, simply Hildegarde explained to him what nhe would not have been able to say to his wife: . "We .believe in giving the poor people better living conditions first, so that -then they will be better able o fight for other things: . S TVes,' and make them , discontented all along the line," retorted Hubert. . And fervently HUdebarde responded. "If only we could maka them suff iciently discontented Hubert amiled a trifle cynically as be thought of his Homestead. Mills and the lowered value of their stocks. And picking-.np"i newspaper he brought a marked article to Hildegarde's attention. " 'T Vhouid say you were succeeding very well. Have you seen this series of furious articles on factory reform question? "It demands higher wages and shorter hours, and all sorts of improvements in sanitary conditions. It doesn't seem to matter to the writer how dividends must be cut and how nearly to the wall owners may be forced. It preaches the brotherhood of. man and then serenely plans the ruination of owners. Have you seen it?" . "Yes," said Hildegarde simply. "What do you think of the series?" asked Hubert. "I ought to approve of the articles." "Why? "Because I wrote them. They're mine." At her simple assertion Knolys start ed in amazement and Lawrence started, too, in terror lest this lose him the BE HEALTHY, HAPPY, VIGOROUS Trembling, Nervous Prostration and that Tired Feeling Vanish after a . Hifdegarde Seea the Other Side of the Question. But to Hildegarde the weakness of the whole factory system' was so very evident To her It was clear- that a mill which could pay dividends of ten or twelve per cent on Its stock and which was making fortunes for its owners in a short period of years was coining money in terms of human lives. She had seen little children go into mills straight and strong and whole in spite of the heritage of poverty. She had seen them a year later warped and twisted in mind and body. She knew what lack of ventilation and dearth of sunshine could mean to young growing things. (To Be Continued.)
