IUFF EULOGIZES BOOKER T. WASHINGTON AT SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL
"True education comes from mixing and mingling with all sorts and conditions of men rather than from books and schools alone." said Edgar Biff, presiding officer at the Booker T. Washington memorial exercises held at the Second Baptist church last ev ening. "This was the attitude of Mr. Washington," the speaker said, "and It shows his true greatness." The address of Mr. Iliff was a high tribute to the noble life of the great educator and reformer. The address In part follows: , . "We are here tonight to pay tribute to a man who did something; a man who Inherited nothing but left a great name; who began at the bottom of the ladder and mounted to the top round. "Shakespeare said that some are born great, some achieve greatness. and some have greatness thrust upon them. Greatness Not Inherited. "We do not believe in America that any man can be born great. Kings of royal blood were said to have been born great and tbat tneir sons in heriting the throne had greatnesa thrust upon them. There is no greatness In mountine a throne built upon the slavery and slaughter, or upon the skulls and . skeletons of men. "We believe in one part only of Shakespeare's saying that some achieve greatness. They are neither born great nor have greatness thrust upon them. Such men as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Edison and Ulysses S. Grant achieved, carved, wrought out their greatness. "We are not here to speak of racial differences. Humanity closes the chasms of birth -and race and stretches its hand across every sea of division made by the Ignorance and blind prejudices of men. . Character the Test. "No man is your or my superior because of what he owns outside of himself or by any boasted ancestry. There is only one path to superiority. If a man Is kinder, more Just, gentler, more manly, wider In his humanity, stronger in his love of mercy, more valiant to do justice, more devout In his humble walk before his God, then he is my superior no matter what his race, color, creed or party affiliation. "Booker T. Washington Is one of the highest illustrations of this thought. He made good. His highest teaching by word and deed was that man must depend upon himself. He made brighter the old saying tha,t the gods help those who help themselves. The whole universe is on the side of any man who is honestly and sincerely determined to make himself a place in the sun. This man insisted that his people cease to be independents and wards of the nation and stop begging at the white man's kitchen door. He cried to them: "It's up to you! Go to work! Study, learn, do things. Be men! Improve your opportunities. There is a place for you, and in time the world will recognize your worth. "This may be said to many white men, and would be said oftener to them If the contemptible political demagogues did not throw dirt in their eyes. The result is that men whine
Most men like Fatiirias but maybe you wont
Fatimas please so many men that they outsell any other cigarette costing over 5c But it may happen that your taste won't fit Fatimas. That's nothing against you. Nor against Fatimas. But if vour taste dona fit Fatimas, you can feel
and howl that a poor man baa no show, and that opportunity has departed forever. Never was falser doctrine. I believe the opportunities in America for a useful and successful life were never greater than now. Of course our economic condition Is not perfect, but men like Booker T. Washington who forge ahead and MhUvA thin are the ones who help
to make that condition better. The wMner never helps a little bit. He only hinders. Attitude on Education. "I was very forcibly Impressed with Booker T. Washington' attitude toward ' education. There is a lot of stuff - in this world called education that is not education. This man was perfectly sane-on this subject. In his best book called "My- Larger - Education," Mr. Washington insists that the truest education comes from mixing and mingling with all sorts and conditions of men rather than from books and schools alone. This was exactly the attitude of America's greatest philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, when he said: " 'You must, for wisdom, for sanity, have some access to the mind and heart of the common humanity.' "This is the only way to break down our prejudices born of too much learning. Why, don't you know that the great scholars of this country quoted Greek scripture in the original to prove that slavery was a divine Institution? Educated prejudice is only Ignorance canned up in self-sealer jars. Break the jars and we find the contents spoiled by exclusion from fresh air. We find mummies, not men. For of this you can be sure Fatimas are cool and friendly to the throat and tongue. And they will never leave you "feeling mean" as long as you smoke within the bounds of reason. Thesw tests show you how to prove this. Because Fatimas are cool and because they can be smoked freely and often they have rightly earned the title, "The Sensible Cigarette." It simply remains for , you to see if their taste suits vou as well as it ts suiting thousands and thousands of other men Test Fatimas today You mav find that thefr taste is exactly what you've been looking for in a cigarette.
