The Unchastened Woman
SYNOPSIS. Caroline Knolys, wife of Hubert Knolys. capitalist, 1b coming borne from Europe.. Her husband prepares for her coming. Caroline's bosom friend, Susan Amble, rushes Into the bouce to tell Mr. Knolys that Caroline U in trouble with the custom officials. While be is wondering what to do Caroline herself appears, thinking she has settled the difficulty. She greets him cooly, and In the course of a clever conversation, it becomes evident that the husband ts disappointed because not even the government has been able to chasten his brilliant wife. BY ANN LISLE. But it was not that the man was visioning. He had come to realize that even a trouble shared would have given them a mutuality of interest. There was no bond between them only the walls of conventional marriage that enclosed them in an empty house. Freedom to go his own way would still have meant a few years of joyous self-expression. He looked at the perfect creature before him the woman who was worlds away, though the world called her his wife. He looked and longed to cut his life asunder from the sham of his place at her side and longing for freedom, he knew bow futile it would be to say the words he intended to speak even in the face of his wife's scorn. And as be began, another woman's face rose before his eyes Knolys forced his mind away from the contemplation of what might have been, away from the longing for what might still be, and with an undercurrent of sadness tinging his smile, he expressed lightly what weighed so heavily on his consciousness: "Well, our married life is certainly nothing to boast of." "Pardon, my dear Hubert, we've made a brilliant success of marriage. We ought to be grateful to the institution." Caroline eyed him brightly and leaned forward as she replied. To compare a woman as light of touch as delicately balanced mentally as she was, to a "Jungle cat" is giving too much weight to a simile and yet In her method with Hubert there was some of the pltilessness with which that great destroyer eyes the prey under its paws! Perhaps she was more like a fencer with unsheathed rapier who knows that her steady wrist will enable her 1o flick the enemy where she will, and is feure. too, that her keen eye will determine when that touch of steel finds a wincins nerve. To kill were a bungling thing. To flick on the raw ah, that requires great skill. Caroline went on with delicate and wounding insinuation and purring voice of velvet above tho icy threat. "Marriage has given both of us the fullest liberty a liberty that I've enjoyed and you've" The man rose to his feet wearily. It was better to take that attack standing, some old instinct of fighting forebears told him. "It makes no difference where we begin; we always wind up at the same place, don't we?" Caroline eyed him through narrowed eyes. She saw a man of courtly
grace, of breeding a man around whose mouth were tired lines lines made by smiles that came- from the mind and not the heart. She most tighten her bold on him teca.use be was necessary to her scheme of things. That he had not been man enough to keep bis hold on ber that was his own fault quite. If men let themselves be managed pout! Sbe tossed off the thought and thrust again and dangerously near a -vital spot The voice that spoke was sweater than ever. Yet its undertones reached Hubert. "Because you nave abused your liberty," said she. - The man faced her unsmiling. There was a challenge, but he did not know quite all it meant. -; ... V"Yes, I admit it's my fault If you like, all my fault. It's useless- to go back over the old ruptures and recriminations. The prime . mistake in both our lives was that We ever married. Well, we did. After about two years of doves we had several years of cat and dog" The tone of this did not appeal to Caroline it was too banal too heavily stressed. She Interrupted lightly. "I beg your pardon, in which class of animals do you place me?" "You refused divorce or separation at a time in life when we might have got one or the other without making ourselves ridiculous." "Divorce Is always ridiculous." Caroline's voice was stripped of the sweetness now. It revealed Itself starkly and as Ice. "I made up my mind you'd never get free for any thing I should do." "Yes, you've always been very careful about that. It isn't morality; but you'd never care to relinquish, an ad vantage. In the real significance of marriage, you have broken all your vows but one. I have kept all my vows but one. That one violation of mine has given you the whip-band over me for these long years." The Attacker Removes Her Velvet Glove. Caroline leaned back idly. But sbe meant, in her next sentence, to attack and attack a vital spot so at last your expert fencer, tired of parrying, touches lightly and with button still covering the point of bis steel, upon the red heart sewed above his adversary's own beating heart of flesh and blood. Perhaps that was all her attack meant to a thoroughbred like Hubert Knolys. To most men it must have seemed more as if the cat of the jungle were coming out into the open to stalk her prey. "Have you broken with that wo man?" demanded Caroline. "What woman?" Hubert forced his tone to indifference. ' "That Madden woman. Emily Madden." "You know nothing whatever about her." "Pardon, I have taken all the trouble to gather the intimate details." "Indeed?" said the man, smiling cynically. A man denies while there Is a chance to save a woman's reputation toy flying . about ber he ac quiesces when lies become futile and make her absurd as one of whom be must be ashamedj Caroline was smiling In cold content. The button was off her foil now.
DEMOCRATS
Continued From Page One. to the present time Bayer has no opposition for that office. May Oppose Gray. One of the most important questions which probably will be raiced at the Democratic rally at Cambridge City Mil be the advisability of entering a Wayne county candidate in the contest for the congressional nomination, against Finly H. Gray of Connerssvllle, now serving his thirl term as representative in congress. The majority of Richmond Democrats, are opposed to the re-nomination of Gray, but, it is understood, he still has considerable strength in the western part of the county. Three prominent Wayne county Democrats have been mentioned as available candidates for the congressional nomination, John M. Lontz and Lawrence
Handley of Richmond, and Lawrence! Bertsch of Cambridge City. Bertsch has stated, ho'.vever, that he will not; enter the comest, wliiie neither Lontz i nor Handley .vc socking the nomina-' tir-'i. Inject Lienor Problem. j Democrats admit that the liquor j question will cut a figure in the se-j
lection of a congressional candidate next year. The so-called "wet" element of the party in this county are said to be friendly to Gray, anticipat ing that he could be depended upon to vote against nation-wide prohibition although be has not committed himself on this question. It is anticipated that District Chairman Walter Chambers, of New Castle, will shortly announce himself as a candidate for the congressional nom inatlon, and in the event he does sc and there is no Wayne county candi date satisfactory to them, it is belies ed Chambers would be able to cox mand the support of the "dry" Der. ocrats in this county.

THE NEWEST REMEDY FOR BACKACHE, RHEUMATISUM AND DROPSY
Kidney, Bladder and Uric Acid troubles bring misery to many. When the kidneys are weak or diseased, these natural filters do not cleanse ;h blood sufficiently, and the poisons are carried to all parts of the body. There follow depression, aches and pains, heaviness, drowsiness, irritability, headaches, chilliness and rheumatism. In some people there are sharp pains in the back and loins, distressing bladder disorders and sometimes obstinate dropsy. The uric acid sometimes forms into gravel or kidney stones. When the uric acid affects the muscles and jointB, it causes lumbago, rheumatism, gout or sciatica. Write Dr. Pierce at once, send 10 cents for large trial package, or 50 cents for full treatment of "Anuric" or ask your druggist for it. During digestion uric acid is absorbed into the system from meat eaten, and even from some vegetables. The poor kidneys get tired and backache begins. This is a good time to take
"Anuric," the new discovery of Dr Pierce for Kidney trouble and Backache. Neglected kidney trouble is re sponsible for many deaths, and Insurance Company examining doctors al ways test the water of an applicant be fore a policy will be issued. Have you ever set aside a bottle of water "for twenty-four hours? A heavy sediment or settling sometimes Indicates kidney trouble. The true nature and character of diseases, especially those of the kidneys and urinary organs, can often be determined by a careful chem ical analysis and microscopical exam ination this is done by expert chemists of the Medical Staff of the Invalids' Hotel. If you wish to know your condition send a sample of your water to Doctor Pierce's Invalids' Hotel, Buffalo, N. Y.. and describe your symptoms. It will be examined without any expense to you, and Doctor Pierce or his Staff of Assisting Physicians will inform you truthfully. Adv.

less honorable name. The line of demarcation between a woman . who is technically "good," as Caroline was as yet, and. a woman who is called "bad." as Kmily Madden would always be, is not a" straight and heavily marked black guide to youth. It Is a deep curve. ,,.. And when your. Carolines draw their skirts away from you: Emilys, they must beware- lest they sweep their haughty draperies out across the circle. Temptation from without means nothing. The woman who has met a foe in the citadel , of her heart and who has resisted dare call herself good but she is above demanding the title. The woman who has a high ideal of herself and who will flght her ignoble if human longings to be true to what she knows is best in her nature might stretch out a helping hand to Emily and deny Caroline. And well it would prove for Emily later if she knew such a woman. - But now Knolys made his little fight for the woman who, if she had given herself, had still given unselfishly. "And your friends will continue to see us, whenever Miss Madden does me the honor to accompany me." Caroline smiled. Standards other than ber own always seemed rather absurd to her. And Hghtl7 and in dismissal of the whole subject she resumed the perusal of her newspaper. Royalty concluding an interview was Hubert's thought. "Oh, very well. I shall continue to condone everything because I do not wish the elaborate structure I have built for many years to be destroyed." Suddenly she laid down the paper and lifted her graceful arms on high in what might have been a barely disguised gesture of yawning, or perhaps it was a laughing invocation for the mock heroics with which she continuedand concluded: "Our marriage stands as a temple to the Gods of Convention. The priests are hypocrites; but be careful not to make the congregation laugh. That's all I ask of you. Quite quite simple, Isn't It?" "Yes, simple as all heartless things are," replied Knolys wearily. After all be had been unable to make a plea for freedom. Caroline so evidently knew what she wanted. And she so evidently intended to have it. From her he could not get his freedom she had seen to that. From him she could not take her's It would make her absurd to acknowledge to the world lhat-an unknown Emily Madden had taken anything from her store
