HER HUSBAND'S WIDOW
CHAPTER LVII. ' But he did not seem to hear her. He was looking straight before him, his hands clasped behind him, with the manner of a man who has to say something dpfinite and painful, but does not know how. to begin.' As she watched him he placed a cigarette between his liis abstractedly and lit it without rc:v( nibsring to ask her permission. ''Yea have come here to say something important. Uavent you?" she asked, inotioninc; hl.n to pass her the cigarettes. "Yes," he said, obeying the gesture, "something very important. Look here Jenny, I've been thinking over things.
You have declared yourself my wife before Mrs. Varney and Gaveston. The time has come for you to declare that before society at large." ; He colored deeply. I don't mean to say, of course, that I want you really to take me for your husband. But I must ask you to call, yourself by my name and to. acknowledge that we were married. "So that is your proposal, is.- it?" She considered him with half shut eyes "Have you discovered that . you are in love with me after all?" Somehow she awaited his, reply not so much with eagerness as with curiosIt. Captain Steele Tries to Settle His Love Affair. He bit his lip And stared at his cigarette. He shrugged his shoulders. "I am not going to lie to you," he answered. "I wish for everybody's sake that I could. I care for you very much Jenny, and always shall, but I don't love you. If you make 71s sacrifice, t promise that I shell regard myself as bdund to you, that. I will never-speak a word of love to anther women. "It is not much to offer, I know, but you, must remember that it was of your own free will and initiative, who without consulting me, declared yourself to be my wife. Whatever advantage you proposed to gain by that step I now offer ydu. That is all I can in apology for what I am aware sounds a very Impudent proposal." She knew that he would keep bis promise. It sounded tempting that "he would never speak a word of love to another woman." But, after all, what advantage would that be to her? Her lust of power would be gratified, that was all. It was dawning on her, too, that there were things she cared for more than this soldier's love. Besides, in view of Erdsley's threat, it was utterly impossible to keep him. But she wanted to get at his motives. "You are making thi proposal, I imagine, in the interests of Leslie Varney, your real wife?" she asked. He nodded. "I .can't deny it. It was in her interests that I acquiesced to your claim to be my wife; A man called Erdsley has sworn to publish the fact of her marriage with meGalveston, extraordinary to relate, is not willing to take advantage of it in fact, he urged the course I now suggest upon me. But though he may forego bis legal claims, Erdsley would be in a position to blast Leslie's reputation and to place a stigma upon her child. The' only means of saving her is for me to avow this pretended marriage." "I suppose it has not occurred to you and the magnanimous Sir Ralph Gaveston that such an avowal would ruin me?" Mrs. Melas twisted, her thin lips inio an ugly sneer. "Ruin you?" I hope not. In any case it is hardly fair to reproach us. And I must again remind you,, though

it sounds ungenerous, you placed yourself in this position of your own free will. . You claimed me as year, hus

Idle to deny that I love., It seems to
me that this gives me the right to ask you to repeat in public what you have said in private." He' might have added that in consequence of her allegation he had risked death at Varney 'a hands, but it had not occurred to "him that this was a risk worth speaking about ' . She smoked In silence for a few seconds. "I didn't say that you had not the right to ask this." she observed presently, "though I may point out that when I claimed you as my husband I fancied that I was in love with you,, and that you might love me." "You do not loveme now?" he broke in, anxiously. : She laughed. , "To hear" the note of anxiety in your voice a stranger might Euppose you were a yearning lover! Instead of which you are anxious for me to love you that I may sacrifice myself for another woman. How very quaint! No, Victor, you have rejected my love once too often. "Perhaps I am still just a little .in love with you" she looked him up and down approvingly "but I am getting over it. I'm getting over it fast. You strike me in some ways as being too straight laced and conscientious for me. There is a man I met this evening. ... . Well, he's more of my sort, and he can offer me a coronet,
it it's only a Russian one.
"You don t ' men to say that yau are going to let Leslie and her boy be ruined because some Russian has
offered you a title!" cried Steele with the naive selfishness of a lover. "Why shouldn't I? Yon are very droll. ; Bother your Leslie! - What do I care about her? I .wanted, you. and since I can't nave you, she or anybody else can." She shifted uneasily. It goes a little against the grain, grant. But'; her eyes glinted maliciously "perhaps she won't take you back after all. But anyhow, Vic. what yon ask is now impossible. I must forego the
honor of assuming your name and proclaiming myself your wife. I resign reluctantly. I admit that title to the fair Leslie. It's no go!" She shook h'er head emphatically and gazed up at the celling. To Be Continued
