POPE BENEDICT WILL RENOUNCE TEMPORARY RULE
LONDON, Not: 17,-fIt 1 tated here that t the approaching consistory Pope Benedict wfll substantially declare a renunciation' of temporal powers, says a dispatch to the Exchange Telegraph company from its Rome correspondent. The pontiff will take this step, the correspondent adds, to guarantee his liberty in spiritual work, and with the consent of Italy, his presence in the general European conference to follow the war. The correspondent makes no comment on his message, but It was taken here as indicating that steps toward peace are imminent. . Temporal power is the sorereign power which the pope possesses as ruler of the papal states. Upon the incorporation of the papal states Into the kingdom of Italy, the question was agitated before the entire world and is still, more than a generation later, a practical matter for discussion. RAE WILL PREACH. The special Thanksgiving service in the First Presbyterian church on November 25, Thanksgiving day, will open at 10:30 o'clock and close at 11:30 promptly. Campbell of College Corner, was a visitor in town this morning and was eulogizing the work of the auto backs running betwen Richmond and suburban towns. Fifteen hack lines cover twenty or more places and Mr. Campbell stated that they had done wonderful work in helping out of town folks as well as doing big things in bringing trade to Richmond merchants. Lee Harlan, who has charge of the local station, came in for a large Khare of credit for the success of the hacks from Mr. Campbell, for he stated that the courtesy and friendliness from this end of the line had been largely responsible for the success of the system. "Messages and telephone calls are attended to," said Mr. Campbell, "that are often Important, . and before . the auto hack line was established these things which are often of great Importance were neglected." FITZ Theo S. Fitz. aged 60, died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Deck in Columbus, Ohio. He was for many years an employe of the American Seeding Machine company. Only his daughter survives. Mr. Fitz was a member of the Knights of Pythias. Funeral at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at Doan & Klute undertaking parlors, F.ev. H C. Harman officiating. TAILORS REPORT UNUSUAL TRADE Hard times in Richmond are only a myth, this is the belief expressed today by one of the leading merchant tailors. He said more young men, especially, had ordered two and three suits of clothes this autumn than during the many years he had been in business. Bracken, aged 42, wife of Captain Edward J. Bracken of the Twenty-third regiment died Sunday in a hospital at Jacksonville, (Florida. Charges brought against the police force of Noblesville that thV liquor laws are being disregarded since fJoblesville voted dry a few weeks ago, today caused the resignation of the chief of police, the discharge of another policeman and the filing of formal charges of neglect of duty against a third member of the department. The resignation of the chief was handed to Mayor H. C. Lowe when the law enforcement league threatened to file charges against him and have him ousted. LONDON, Nov. 17. The hospital ship Anglla. struck a mine In the English channel and aank with a loss of 85 wounded soldiers, according to aa official announcement by the admiralty today. There were 385 wounded soldier on board, but the admiralty announced that 300 were saved. - A report from Dover stated that the Anglia had been sunk by a German submarine with a loas of 200 wounded soldiers. VON C1ACKENSEN MATCHED WITH LORD KITCHENER ROME. Nov. 17. Efforts of the Allies to win a victory on Gallipoli peninsula will bring two master warriors. Lord Kitchener of England, and Field Marshal von Mackensen of Germany, into conflict, according to re ports received here today. Von Mackensen is said to have arrived at Constantinople on Sunday and left on Tuesday to assume command l of the Turco-German forces on Gallipoli, while Kitchener is reported In a news dispatch from Athens to have sailed on a warship from Mudros, Island of Lemnos, for the Dardanelles front. BURROWS IS DEAD KALAMAZOO, Mich.. Nov. 17. Arrangementa for the funeral of Julius Caesar Burrows, former United States senator from Michigan, were to be made today. Mr. Burrows died at his home . here last night. Mr. Burrows was born in northeast Erie county, Pennsylvania, in 1843. He served for nine terms in congress from this district. He became United States senator in 1895, serving continuously until 1911. He was temporary chairman of the Republican national convention in Chicago in 1908. WOODWARD GIVEN COMMITTEE JOB W. C. Prof. Langdon will discuss the matter of pageants and the centennial movement in their relation to the festival which will be given in Richmond under the auspices of the three bodies next year in connection with the state celebration.
