Bringing Up Father

Her Husband's Widow

CHAPTER XLVII. He found her seated near, the fireplace, at nearly the same spot where he had first seen her. She looked wonderfully nandsome, he thought, in her black evening gown, which showed off bo well her red hair and her dazzling white skin. Again the resemblance to some one he had known struck him unpleasantly. He noticed with qualms that her whole attitude expressed impatience and excitement. Her knees were crossed, her head was thrown back, her. hands drummed on the arm of her chair. She was puffing vIcIoubly at a cigarette, which she threw into the grate as he entered. "Sit down, Sir Ralph," she said in a husky voice. "You and I have a good deal to say to each other." Then she stood up and looked down at him in wondering scorn. "When we last met in this room," she began in deliberate accents," "you heard Oswald say that he was satisfied with the assurances of Captain Steele and that Melas woman that they bad already been married. Two days after that Oswald was killed. Captain Rhedan says that you placed the pistol in his pocket which killed him" The Baronet interrupted her with a wave of his hand. "I thought you had sent for me to talk about that lie," 'he said calmly. "I hopo it is a He I hope so very much for reasons you are presently to hear. ' I hope it is also a lie that you destroyed or purloined the will which Oswald executed in the boat which was witnessed by two stewards. Heaven knows I am the last person to wish these things were true" her voice quavered a little. She choked down a dry . Bob and went on: "Unfortunately it seems that you have a motive which might easily have prompted you to commit these crimes. Yesterday your spy Erdsley called on me and told me that you were conspiring to oust Oswald's son from his inheritance." The baronet went gray. "Erdsley!" be gasped. "He told you that! The vile hound!" "Yes, he betrayed you as you betrayed Oswald and are ready to betray Oswald's son. He' came all the way to Switzerland to tell me the information you had sent him to Egypt to obtain. For a man of the world, you seem to possess singularly little knowledge of character!" She paused to let the gibe sink in. He sat clenching his hands, staring before him, cursing under his breath. He was a fool an utter fool! He might have forseen that Erdsley would sell him. Had Erdsley ever kept faith with any man? And she, of course, had the ready money to buy him. "Erdsley is a cheat, a- thief, and a liar," he cried. His voice sounded thick and gutteral. His heart did not seem to be standing the strain of this excitement well. Of late It had been behaving very irregularly. Just now it seemed to be threatening to stop altogether. "You say he is a liar you deny that you sent him to Egypt?" she asked, her eyes glittering. He Invents a Plausible Falsehood. He thought quickly. Erdsley might have shown her his cablegrams. She studied his face. She read there only anger and indignation the indignation, it might be, of a man falsely accused or of a scoundrel betrayed by his accomplice. Erdsley had admitted that he had not been told by him that she and Leslie Morne were the same person. "Very well," she said, never taking her eyes from his face, "I may or may not believe that. Your subsequent behavior will confirm or disprove what you say. ... 1 rejected Erdsley's offer. I I she laughed outright "I threw him in the water and fished him out with a hook. He is coming to England to tell you that Steele and that woman were never married, and that the law will enable you to swindle Jimmy out of his father's property if you' are vile enough to take advantage of it." r A gleam of triumph came into his TREX! eyes. He cleared his throat. "That is not the way. to speajt, Leslie," he said in an injured tone. "You have my sympathy, but if I am the next heir" "Oh, please wait a moment," she entreated him; "I have a curious little surprise for you. Do you remember a young actress this is away back in the '80s called Lillian Morton?"- " ' "Yes." said Sir Ralph, flushing faintly. "What has she to do with this?" "Only 'that I am her daughter and yours!" To Be Continued. GLEN KARN, O. Mrs. Lulu CoppQck spent a few days last week with her sister at Laura, O. Johns, Elida, Ohio, relates her experience as follows: "My little boy is subject to roup. During the past winter I kept a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy in the house, and when he began having that croupy cough I would give him one or two doses of it and it would break the attack. I like it better for children than any other cough medicine because children take it willingly, and it is safe and reliable." Obtainable everywhere. Adv. Beware of Cheap Substitutes. Use Bisurated Magnesia to Quickly Stop Indigestion Pains, Belching . Bloating and Sour Rising. Most folks who after eating experience a sour burning sensation in the stomach are troubled with gas, bloating or a heavy, lumpy feeling call it Indigestion and take a pepsin pill or something of the kind to help the stomach digest the food and push it into the intestines. In' most cases these people have what physicians call an acid stomach. Their stomachs secrete too much hydrochloric acid which mixes with their food so that it ferments and sours and makes them uncomfortable "instead of using something to artificially push this sour acid mass as much harm as in the stomach they need a ismple. harmless antacid like bisurated magnesia that will quickly and harmlessly neutralize the acid in their stomach and make its food contents sweet. Then digestion becomes natural and painless and the disagreeable symptoms of heaviness, burning, gas, belching, bloating, etc., all vanish. As magnesia is put u in various forms and for various purposes do not allow the druggist to give you anything but the real bisurated magnesia in a plainly labeled and sealed bottle which insures the purity and full strength either in powder or tablet form. A teaspoonful if bisurated magnesia in a little water taken after meals will neutralize the excess acid. in your stomach and prevent or stop stomach distress. Adv. Photae 2834 RATES Wanted.
