. Overlooking a Patriotic Duty. "Next Sunday the patriotic societies of Indianapolis will honor the memory of Oliver P. Morton, a native of Wayne county, and Lincoln's staunchest friend during the Civir war, a loyalty that won him the title "Indiana's great war governor." Wayne county has done little, practically nothing, to commemorate the memory and perpetuate the story of this great man's life. No patriotic service is held here in honor of the great governor. It remained for Indianapolis to remember Wayne county's greatest son and honor him. The apathy of Wayne county toward Oliver P. Morton is one of the surprising elements of the community. The county prides itself on being the
home of this great patriot ; whenever a political spellbinder mentions his name, and all of them do, the crowds cheer themselves hoarse ; visitors are told with pride that Morton was born at Centerville and that the old house still stands there. But the county, too self -centered and penurious to open its purse strings, has not even erected a monument in honor of its greatest son.- It lets the old house where he lived in Centerville remain: private property, instead of buying it, turning it into a county museum, and collecting there the rich historical data that is still available. - If men are known by their fruits, Wayne county ought to be ashamed of the negligence it has shown toward the memory of Morton. Patriotic men and women in this community ought be chagrined to know that an organization in another county, thinks more of Wayne county's noblest son than does his own community. Where is the old patriotism that in the 60's made men willing to follow Morton's call to arms? Where is the loyalty that in the 60's impelled women to sew and repair clothes for the boys in blue, work on hospital supplies and send foodstuffs to the men in the trenches, at the request of the "War Governor?" Are the sons and daughters of these men and women so penurious, so wanting in patriotism that Morton's memory is only a historical incident and no longer a patriotic example of selfsacrificing heroism?
