Dealers : representing out-of-town firms are bavins; great difficulty in jetting sufficient cars to supply the demand which appears to be on the increase. All the automobile manufacturers here are -working overtime turning out 1918 models and the demand for Westcotts, Davis and Pilot cars has never been exceeded. Every garage In the city is doing capacity business and there never was a season when so much gasoline and oil was sold. Considering the . great number of machines , in use in Richmond and vicinity and the great amount of traffic accidents are rare. . It is claimed by automobile men that Richmond has more automobiles In use per capita than any other city of, its size in the United States. . Many Car In Use. . . " There are over 2,000 ' cars in the city and the Immediate territory besides the large number - that' travel through and it is estimated that there is not a day goes by that does not see at least 5.000 machines pass the corner of Eighth and Main streets. ' All of the manufacturers of cars declare that they never were so busy before and this Is due to the quality of the machines that they produce. , Richmond is fast - coming to the front as an ' automobile center and the automobiles sent out from the lo cal factories ' are lergely responsible for this verdict, which Is well deservfd. - The Pilot car is coming to the front as a standard machine because ; they have stood up so well under trying circumstances and stand a lot of bard road wnrlr ' f Mr. Siedel.has his men working day nd night and they, are now , busy on .ans for an addition , to the factory Out at the Westcott orders are com ik in so fast that the prospects are hat they will have greatly to In crease meir ouipui. i Davis cars are in . demand in the last and the dealers that are selling hem are swamping the -factory with f rders. Sketches from Life
EMBEZZLEMENT Continued From' Page One Mr. Shiveley, '"Is the fact that the Hasemeiers had been dfawing out . of firm more money than the business justified. .';. . ...,. '' . ' i "The overdrafts Jeopardized; their financial - condition. - Just because they raised - their salaries- gave - them no excuse to make greater withdrawals.Book salaries don't amount to anything when there are no profits to back them up. "This case is a continued story of overdrafts and to this the. shortage can be accounted. You can't eat your cake and have it, too. If you take out more money than you put in, there is a shortage. "When all these overdrafts occurred, somebody had to hold the bag and this part fell to the creditors. . This . accounts for the large number of unpaid bills.- Their figures show that there were no profits and everything had been eaten up by overdrafts. Exonerates Woman. "You have heard quite a good deal about dividends, surplus and profits," said Mr. Shiveley. . "There has not been one - bit of testimony to prove that these were anything more than mere 'paper dividends, - and 'paper' profits. Why should this woman, who has gone to her grave with these allegations heaped on her head, be ac countable for 'paper' losses. "It took two days for the plaintiff to figure out the loss and gain account of 1914. When they did finally pres ent it to court, it showed that during that year there was a loss of $4,000 and including the loss of $11,910, which is alleged, It would make the total loss for this year approximately $16,000. Doesn't it appear a bit queer to you jurymen that , the corporation should lose $16,000, in this year while in the previous years the 'profits,' as tbey testified to, were so large. Cause of Suicide. "It is undoubtedly true that the 'bill question' drove her to suicide. She did not have the nerve to tell the Hasemeiers the true condition of their financial affairs. Any person who knew her does not doubt in the least this statement. - -- "She was running the entire busi ness of that corporation for $10 a week. No wonder she. .was ashamed to tell her brothers and sisters the amount of her salary. It was a $100 a month job or even more. "The letter she wrote is not the let ter of one who has committed a crime.. It is the unvarnished truth, every word of it. It is a clear statement of the general condition of affairs at the store." - . , Contrary to the interpretation plac ed on the letter by Wilfred Jessup, counsel for the plaintiff, Friday afternoon, Ray Shiveley said that the let: ter was the dying statement of Miss Bentlage. When she wrote the letter she bad contemplated suicide, he. said. The three Hasemeier brothers, who are the plaintiffs in the case, were derided by Shiveley for ever bringing the case to court. . . . "It was not necessary to have this lengthy trial - just to vindicate Chris Hasemeier with his bankers, be said. He could have secured just as large amount of loans to pay the losses if he had not brought the suit as he could by bringing the suit. The .only reason was to heap the charge of crime upon a dead woman, who has been a faithful servant. -; The .Wall Street Journal calls the period between 1910 and 1920 the "era of the silo" in American agriculture, adding: "The silo is' the fortress by which the American farm acres to pristine productiveness.-" ' r ' -
'Is It Runniiu?" LIGHT PRESSURE THROWS CLUTCH ON WESTCOTTS A remarkable . feature connected with the new Westcott cars and one that Is appealing especially to the women motorists throughout . the country is the fact that the clutch pedals on these -cars require only 30 lbs. pressure and can be operated with ease and simplicity. "It isn't any wonder that the women are enthusiastic over these new Westcott cars," said Mr. F. T. Ross, publicity manager of the Westcott Motor Car company of this city, "when It is considered that it doesn't require a 250 lb. man to push down the clutch and brake pedals and that a woman can drive "these cars with as much ease and comfort as a man. I was very much amused," continued Mr. Ross, "with a certain woman to whom I was showing one of these new - Westcott models not long ago. "She went' over that car from the radiator to the tire carrier in the rear and from-bottom to top with the purpose of 'picking it to pieces.' I was delighted at this for I knew that try as she would she couldn't find anything about them that called for an apology in any way. "Finally she took the driver's seat and pushed the clutch down just to try it and said in, an off-hand manner. 'I see your clutch isn't connected up.' i saia, maeea it is mat is one or tne many pleasing features of Westcott cars.' Well sir, it did me good to see the, expression of delight that came over that woman's face at. let her foot play on that clutch pedal t, hat settled it. She went out of here 'h an air which plainly told me that her determination to. buy a Westcott was settled." Mr. Ross further said that this feature in Westcott cars is caus ing more than ordinary comment from the women motorists throughout the country.
