Accountant Testifies Overdrafts Cannot Be Charged to Company or Stockholders as Shortage. H. C. Hasemeier Retains $4,000 Balance in Business Until 1913, Accountant Tells the Jury. That the overdrafts of H. C. Hasemeier, John Hasemeier and Ed Hasemeier, as testified to in the crossexamination of Accountant Schlautterjbach, are accounted for in the annual statements of the company, was the main point brought out by the plaintiff In the re-direct examination of the plaintiff's witness Monday afternoon at the Hasemeier-Bentlage trial. On account of this fact, the overdrafts can not be charged as a "shortage" against the company or against any of the stockholders, said Mrs. Schlautterbach. . The shortage . for which Miss Bentlage is accountable, he said, is over and above these overdrafts. He said that all of the overdrafts are recorded in the books in the handwriting of Miss Bentlage, and are I carried forward as assets of the company. The accountant testified that whent anv nt ttta Hgnmalar Knva rvram. drew their salary or dividend accounts for the year, it was placed as an asset of the company, meaning that the company was creditor to that amount. In many years, he testified, the salaries i and dividends were not paid to the r Hssemeters, and in those years, the money, which would have been paid, was left in the business and counted as a liability, or money to which the corporation was debtor. None of the Hasemeiers do any private banking, he testified, and, consequently, whenever any of them had a balance on their accounts, they left it In the business and it was included in the surplus of the business. ' During the first few years, he testified, H. C. Hasemeier overdrew his account. This was true until. 1911, when H. C. Hasemeier had a balance on his salary and dividend accounts of over $4,000. He retained this balance until 1913, the accountant testified. In almost all the years, however, the dividend accounts of the Hasemeiers were overdrawn, but during the past few years the salaries paid have more than overbalanced the dividend withdrawals, leaving a balance to their credit, according to the testimony of Mr. Schlautterbach. The testimony revealed the fact that during the first two years of the business no dividends were declared, and the profits termed as surplus and turned into stock. The capitalization of the store h8 been $30,000 Bince its organization in 1904, although the merchandise inventories ranged from $40,000 to $55,000 since that , time. This enabled the company to have a surplus, according to the accountant. The surplus, as shown by the annual reports, in the handwriting of Miss Bentlage, amounted to about $25,000. The testimony showed further, that the company, according to the figures presented, which the accountant said were in Misa Bentlage's handwriting, did not declare dividends on any money except what was clear profit during the respective year in which the dividends were declared. This point in the plaintiff's case will be attacked by the defense, it is understood, who attempted to prove by the accountant that the dividends de clared during any respective year was greater than the profits actually made, and that the continual overdrawing of salary and dividend accounts was accountable for the shortage, as it took money out of the company's business. This was denied by Mr. Schlautterbach in his re-direct examination. The witness was questioned further by Wilfred Jessup regarding overdrafts. "In you calculations, do these over drafts you have testified to in crossexamination, affect, alter, or change In any respect the totals of shortage that you have testified to?" Mrs. Jessup asked. "They do not. The overdrafts or balances have been included in the annual statements as assets or liabilities against the company, as the case may be, and I have . found them correct in every instance," replied Mr. Schlautterbach. "Where were the shortages you testified to?" he asked. "All of them were in the cash book, which is the only book containing a complete record of cash received," he replied. An Experienced Mother. He said: "I was a sufferer with stomach trouble and. rheumatism. for 10 years. Finally, my condition became so seri ous that It greatly Interfered with my business. I was unable to retain even the lightest foods on my stomach, and had the most severe pains Imaginable in my abdominal regions after eating. My breath was foul and my "tongue was covered with a thick coating. I suffered from headache, nervousness and dizziness, and found it difficult to sleep. The rheumatism also caused me : great pain, especially on damp, cool days. "I tried various medicines, without gaining relief. After being advised by friends to take Tanlac, and seeing it advertised in the newspapers, I decided to try it. I was astonished at the result. After taking a few doses my appetite returned, and I found that I could eat anything I craved with relish. The nervousness and dizziness disappeared, and my sleep became restful and peaceful. I no longer suffer with pains In the stomach and head. "I feel younger than I have In 10 years, and can do more work with less effort than I could In the same time.' In fact. I feel just as well as I did before I became affected with stomach trouble. The rheumatic pains have disappeared almost entirely. I feel like a new man after taking Tanlac, and I want all my friends and others to know it. Tanlac, In my opinion, is all that It is claimed to be, and I can't praise It too highly." Then she'll carry each course in one or two trips when half a dozen or more would be needed if she were not there. Then all the dirty dishes can be piled on to her and be taken back to the kitchen. Think how many steps she will save you around the house.

"Polly" is willing to be inconspicuous when she isn't wanted and doesn't object to being folded up and put in a corner. If you , could talk with some of the housewives who have adopted "Polly," you would hear the most enthusiastic recommendations for her. One of, . her mistresses said that if her "Polly" was the only one to be had she wouldn't let her go for any amount. Take "Polly" into your home and add one more efficient "servant to your staff. -' ;:
