OFFICERS STOP JEFFRIES FIGHT TO SAVE GARRY
Beth Boys Work Hard for Twelve Pretty Evenly Fought Rounds Jeffries Opens Ugly Cuts.
Ray Jeffries defeated Tommy Garry lest night at Dayton in the twelfth round of a scheduled fifteen-round boat Up' to the time the police stopped the light to say Garry from farther punfiatament, both boys were strong and going well. In the eleventh round Jeffries open!ed a gash over Garry's left eye, and the blood poured from it. In the twelfth Jeff followed up his advantage jand started the blood again with a i right swing that almost sent Garry to the floor. The blood was streaming jinto bis eyes, blinding him, and Jeff was hammering away at will when the police stopped the fight. Jeffries never made a better show Ing, and it must be said for Garry that he put up a bard and game battle. Jeff Starts Well. In the first round Jeff , had all the best of it, and sent Garry to the ropes with a left hook that took a little ginger out of him for a time. Garry recovered quickly, however, and the succeeding three rounds were about even. In the fifth Garry got in some good work and kept Jeff on the move all the time. It looked as though the local boy was tired in the sixth, but if he was, he recuperated rapidly and kept boring in. Both boys fought hard, and the infighting was clever. Referee Lou Bauman let the boys alone in the mix-ups and they went at It. Garry has a habit of using his bead and shoulders 'o advantage, but Jeff was ready for him and met him at his own game. Jeffries was swinging wild at times, nd both boys were playing hard for a knockout in every round, but neither could land. Garry kept after Jeffries' ntomach and landed hard on several occasions, but his blows did not seem to do any harm. While Garry was on his feet and far from being knocked out when the fight v.as stopped, he was staggering about the ring blinded and Jeffries was hitling him at will. Blily Bonson, Kid Gorman and Kill Tul'.is of Dayton were in Jeffries' corner, while Paul Booker, Andy Howell, Fracl Brand ford and Walter Eichner of Hiyton. looked after Garry. Jinjnjy Sheridan of , Chicago and VcutiK'Ncal cf Altoona ' went fifteen i-ifr.da -to a drav and put up a clever exhibition. Sh.ridan is a veteran, :!:!le Neal i? a newebmer, but he put. up a has and fast fight and had Sheridan guessi.. ; at times.
EARLHAM IN TRIM FOR DEPAUW CLASH
The Eariham squad left this morning for Greehcastle, their train being three quarters of an hour late. Coach Whiteside said Depauw was not going to have the easy time expected, as Eariham is fast, rounding into form and he expected at least, if he didn't win, to hold the score down to a narrow margin. Several new formations have been perfected and there is a decided improvement in the forward passing of the squad and a victory today would not come as a surprise. With one more week's work Whitesides is confident that he will have a team that will be able to compete with the strongest elevens in the circuit and he expects to win a majority of the games yet tot be played.
LIVED IN CONSTANT FEAR.
HAMMOND, Ind., Oct. 30. Joseph D. Cunningham, BO, feared arrest for nineteen years. He was once a general delivery clerk at Alexandria postoffice and stole $500. Tired of groundless fear he gave himself up only to find that his brother had made good the shortage shortly after his dls- , appearance.
AMATEUR FOOTBALL TEAMS WILL PLAY
Cambridge City football team goes to Hagerstown to open the season with the team at that place, while the Richmond team plays in Rishville. Hagerstown, Cambridge City, Williamsburg and Greensfork have elevens this -year and it has been proposed to play a series of games for the Wayne county championship and a suitable trophy be given to the -winner. . (:: . Richmond will have its first try-out Sunday and the boys have all the confidence in the world, although they lack practice. The material Is here for a strong eleven but It's team-work that counts largely and this cannot be had without lots of work together. Five or six games can be played in each town before the snow flies and such a series of games should prove interesting.
