Miss Mary Gwendoline Davies, a member of the bacteriological staff of Pasteur Institute, at Paris, voluntarily 'h footed herself so that a test of an rvperlmental cure for German poisonr as gangrene could be made. She is the youngest daughter of the late Sir Henry Davies, formerly a provincial governor in India, and has a brother, Col. H. S. P. Davies, on staff duty in London. Her two sisters are married to officers in the Indian army Col. Louia Tucker and Col. Saunders of the Twenty-ninth Lancers. Miss Davies, without Informing any
one, infected herself with poisonous liquid identical in composition to the
gas used by the Germans, although she knew animals had been experimented upon in the same manner and had died from the effects. Then she telegraphed to Dr. Taylor of the American Hospital in Paris to apply the antidote he had discovered and had yet to test on a subject. The an
tidote, a solution of hydrochloride of
quinine, happily proved its value, Miss Davies entirely recovering within 24 hours.
