Bringing Up Father
I'l ... 1 1 -;K.WANTED: : i , : WANTED;, i ' .-L - 1
Her Husband's Widow i,aiie oaled ever so slightly. She took the document and read It, walking slowly. Captain Rhedan glancing : admiringly meanwhile at her shapely ' head with Its red curls bent forward in the sunlight. The report was terse. It told Leslie little or nothing that she did not already know. She handed It 'back to Captain Rhedan, with an inquiring glance. "I was aware of all this," she said in a low voice. "I am glad to hear that. May I ask ' from whom you had the particulars of ; Mr. Varney's death?" "From his cousin, Sir Ralph Gaveston." "Mrs. Varney," said Rhedan, j, with an appearance of solemnity, "it was not without considerable reluctance that I took this step of intruding en you in your grief. I took counsel in this matter with my principal. Captain Steele, who felt very properly that he -could not approach you and left me ' free band In this matter. You are aware, of course, that he and. your husband happily composed their differ- , ences and shook hands before the fa- ' tality occurred." Leslie nodded. " "Sir Ralph Gaveston," continued the ' captain, "the moment after the ccldent occurred, declared that your husband had placed the pistol in his own ', pocket. Mrs. Varney, 1 am convinced that he did nothing of the sort. He had i'. no opportunity of doing so. He never weut near the pistol, case at all, nor ' near his overcoat till Sir Ralph helped him on with it." . "How then did the pistol come to be in his pocket?" asked Leslie, stopping and retarding her companion. - -' "It did net come there by accident, Mrs." Varney. It ' waa placed .there, Jy Sir, Ralph .Gavest6n." .. . . "But . . . to vhat end? Surely .a "man Might carry a pistol in : his v.- .-w. .. . ...... 7 - . - "Ycu man that no man could be sure of murdering another by such a : mtans. He could not be sure, I agree. " But it might be worth trying." ' Leslie put' out her hand and touched . for support one of -the , oaks ' which k might have been planted by.her dead husband's ancestors.. "The suggestion ycur words convey, Mr. Rhedan," Ehe said, speaking with difficulty, "is horriblemonstrous! It is also incredible. What purpose could Sir Ralph have had in attempting to murder my husband? He was not his heir my husbanjd has left no will". -r ., , i Rhedan smiled grimly. V'So I heard, Mrs. Varney. But I have just returned from Calais by the same steamer which your husband and his cousin travelled by. I -heard the stewards discussing your husband's death. One of them told me that at your husband's request he witnessed his signature to ' a will the night before the tragedy." "Then whre is it, cried Leslie, : startled. ' - - "Possibly Sir Ralph Gaveston knows." Leslie steadied herself with an ef- - fort. "Why did you sign the processverbal if you believed . that Oswald ? was the victim of foul play?; she asked. "I hardly understand French-I had not had time to think the matter over I did not quite appreciate my principal's position in the matter under ' French laws. I am sorry that I did not act more quickly." Leslie looked . at the letter in her ; hand addressed, to Sir Ralph Gaveston. She had apparently discovered ,; her father only to learn that he had - contrived her husband's murder. f The lodgekeeper's curly-haired boy appeared from behind a tree and touched his cap. ' ' "Shall I post that, ma'am?" he ask- '. ed, seeing the letter In bis mistress's hand. She looked at the urchin and hesitated. "Yes, Willie," she said, comtng to a sudden decision. "Put it in the box.- It will be in time for the last collection." She could not let her father want even if this thing were true. She turned again to Captain Rhedan. "I confess,", she said, "that what you have told me distresses and perplexes me very much." She felt she must ; shield her father. "I really cannot cred- ; it such a charge against Sir Ralph Gaveston," she said, flushing deeply. Captain Rhedan lifted his eyebrows. He had frequented the London clubs long enough to be surprised that any one should entertain a vestige of reX spect for the baronet. s "Very well, Mrs. Varney," he said I stiffly. "I have discharged a very painfur duty in acquainting you with these acts. It is for you to act upon them ( w tot ignore them as you think fit." ," What could I do?" asked Leslie. Her eyes were downcast, she was playing nervously with a leaf she had ' plucked from an overhanging branch. I "You had better consult your- solidtors. I admit that there seems to be no ground for a criminal prosecution, I especially as the deed was ' done In France.! don't know much, about ..the law, but I imagine that the English ' courts would have no jurisdiction in ,the matter." To Be Continued.
