CUT IIONEYMN SHORT SO Ui) CAN JOIN ARMY XONDON, Oct. 27. A newspaper .edited and published In some explicable manner by the British . soldiers In the trenches has the following society note concerning the recent wedding of a young officer: "Twenty-four hours after the ceremony the bridegroom left for Boulogne (by the famous "one o'clock special :from Victoria Station, and before midmight he was cosily installed in the j 'Carlton' dug-out, pelted with something far hotter than confetti or old I shoes. His bride went back to her j mother's and dreamed of the time .when he'd come again unannounced ias good fortune is, and equally hard to recognize. "We're eating her cake here, and wearing the muffler her bridesmaids gave us. Meanwhile the colonel is writing a letter of thanks and promis ing to keep an eye upon young r for a day or two, until his head comes down out of the clouds, and the sniper 'becomes a real institution to him again." Honeymoons Shorter. 1 Weddings in a hurry -are now the fashion in Britain and honeymoons, far from being a real "boon", in length, are often not even a day. Better be a wife for five minutes, one bride is quoted as saying, than an old maid all ! your life. Another woman was heard to remark: "Thank God, he was my .husband for a fortnight before he was shot. Now he can claim me in heaven." The other day a Glasgow man received a summons on an hour's notice to attend the wedding of one of his soldier friends. The intrepid son of j Mars had arrived unexpectedly and asitonished his own particular corner of jthe world by announcing that he intended to be wedded and away in thir-ity-six hours. The best man was afterward heard to assert that the excitejment 'of arranging and carrying through ceremonies at the Registrar's, before the Sheriff and In church, in addition to the lunch, the speeches, a subsequent visit to a theatre, and a nend-off at the station, all within the time limit, had made a confirmed bachelor of him. A bluejacket on one of the Harwich destroyers made a strong bid for the matrimonial speed record. He - could only get two hours' leave of absence from his 6hip, but he used it well." His fiancee and friends met him directly he reached the shore and they drove in a motor car to Ramsey Church, a good three miles. There the wedding was performed and the newly married couple drove back to Harwich to have a "top speed" wedding breakfast. Romance Increases. The witty Lady Randolph Churchill says the nearest approach she knows to a marriage made in Heaven was the case of the aviator who flew over from Dunkirk recently, married his bride, and then flew back again. Romance surrounds almost, all the war wedrtings. The story of how a farmer's sen. Sergeant Crees, of the North Somerset Yeomanry, wooed and won a peer's niece for a bride reads move like a ffgment of the novelist's brain than an actual occurrence. The gallant surgeon came scathless thrcueh ? let of the stiffest fighting, but the day arrived when he found ! himself smons the "casualties," in! Rouen Hospital. Thence he was invalided hoir.e and sent to the V. A. D. Hospital at Oakley Manor, Shrewbury. "The sister second in command here 'was Miss Jackson, who belongs to a wealthy Shropshire family, and whose ather fought ard died for his country 'in the South African War. Lord Hathierton, of Teddesley Park, Stafordshire, 'is her uncle, and she has no end of aristocratic relations, all of which however, did not prevent her devoting herself to nursing the wounded soldiers. Thanks to her care and devotion Serjgeant Crees recovered from a serious .operation, and a warm attachment sprang up between nurse and patient, iwhich led to their engagement and ultimate marriage. f Two members of the medical profes'sion were recently made as one on the high seas. They were Dr. Percy I Wallace (First British Field Hospital (to Serbia) and Miss Dora Woolcock, W the Wounded Allies First Field Unit rto Montenegro. It was when they arrived at Salonica that Dr. Wallace and fMiss Woolcock decided to marry. She rwas bound for Montenegro, he for Serbia. They found that the wedding could only be performed after a three -weeks residence, unless the marriage could take place in a British ship outside the three-mile limit. Accordingly, a ship was chartered, and three miles from land the marriage service was read by the vicar of Buxton, Claude Askew, the novelist, gave the bride away. MILTON A large crowd from Milton went to New Lisbon and New Castle, Tuesday evening to boost the Hoosier Dixie highway. The Boosters' club Thursday evening will give a program from 7 to 8 o'clock. A banquet for the men will be served at 8:30. Speakers will be present from Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Connersville. Everybody is invited. The High school gave a bean supper. Looking over our "sob" column reminds us that once in a while we get a query. We don't know why but we do, so we will answer them now. "If you are going to marry Paul you are engaged to him." . "No Jennie, you are not bethrothed. Only presidents and people with a lot of money can afford such nonsense." In regard to your last question as to why the society editor always refers to the blushing bride, that's easy. The bride blushes because she realizes that she has picked a quince in the garden of love. t N other Pome. Eighty miles Down the road, Hitting high spots Nother load, Tire blowed. Anyhow you've got to take your hat off to him for his persistency, He's in Bryan's class. under the American flag where the ship and its cargo of cotton were confiscated by the French government Under Grave Charge. Max Breitung is charged with conspiracy and he is believed to know something about a $30,000 fund which was raised by German Americans to be uesd in preventing the shipment of war supplies to the allies. The federal investigators are said to be assisted by a woman who has damaging information relative to the activities of Lieutenant Robert Fay and Walter Scholz. This woman, whose name is being shielded, was on the inside of the plot. For some reason, however, she determined to betray Fay and Scholz and delivered into the hands of an agent of the department of justice oh incriminating letter. This leter related to the purchase of explosives by the two Germans. The willingness of Fay and Scholz to confess everything started the authorities on a vigorous hunt for the men higher up. The search is not confined to New York, but extends to Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburg and other large cities. Fay denies his bombs were intend ed to destroy ships carrying ammuni tion to the allies, but to cripple them so they would be helpless at sea. Prevent Diphtheria. f OF GERMAN VICTORY ;.: y - inn. i. mm V' v-' ' 7 STOCKHOLM, Oct. 27. Moscow papers which arrived here report that the population of Kleff. the capital of Bessarabia, was ' thrown into a panic when the ' successes - of the German and Austrian armies In Volhynia became known In that city. Many of the inhabitants. In their fear of a German invasion of Bessarabia, ruined themselves by selling everything that could be turned into money. Valuable pianos were sold for 20 roubles and expensive sophaa, parlor suits etc., could have been had for a few roubles. Pictures, books, chairs, etc., were given away. The authorities kept the fall of Dubno and Lutsk ' secret as long as possible, but the capture of these two fortresses by the Teutonic allies became known through arrival of fugitives. The wealthier classes of the city began to leave at once. Some of the fleeing inhabitants left their homes in charge of armed guards and others placed their furniture in storage houses.- - Thousands of people stormed the depots, demanding transportation . to Moscow or Odessa, but only about six hundred persons could get away every day, as only two trains left in each direction. . All railroad tickets were bought up by speculators who resold them at an enormous profit. When it became known that high officials were connected with this speculation serious riots occurred and repeatedly troops had to charge the threatening mobs. , At Movies Tonight PALACE. When the Equitable Motion Pictures Corporation present their second offering, "The Master of the House" at the Palace theatre on Wednesday, patrons of that house will have an opportunity of seeing that famous dramatic actor, Julius Steger, in his first screen effort, which is a picturization of his former great stage success, and in which he appeared successfully, for a long season in New York and several seasons on the road. "The Master of the House" is the story of a husband, who, tiring of his faithful and old-fashioned wife, seeks to graze in pastures new, but who, after trying experiences, sad adventures and costly blunders, returns to his family fold a sadder and wiser man. The husband, who has wandered off with the beautiful governess who came into his house a siren, is welcomed back by his faithful wife and loving children, a broken, dispirited man. A special cast of Broadway players was assembled by the Equitable Motion Pictures Corporation In 'support of Mr. Steger, and the scenic investitures were elaborate to the extreme. Haw
