2 SAVED IROn EXECUTION
,WA5HINOTON,. Oct. , 23.AIthousl officials made little pretense of disguisingtheir: horror over the official report - made br Brand Whltlock, the United States "; minister to , ' Belgium concerning the execution of Miss Edith Ca veil, the English woman head ' of .a. training '. school In Brussels, they frankly admitted 'the entire question 'was one between Great. Britain ; and Gerfmany. Already , the representatives ' of the state department asking that the death sentence Imposed upon woman companions of Miss Ca veil be commuted have borne fruit through the action of the emperor, who has directed that these ' two woman be pared. But with Miss Cavell dead, there Ms no way In which the United ptateacan do anything.. , '.I , , Represents Britain. -' In this connection It was explained today. Minister Whltlock acted as the representative of the . British government in all of the negotiations to save 'the English woman's life. .British Interests are being looked after by him. But ; inasmuch as his appeals were made in the name of humanity, as well it is not impossible that the officer ; directly responsible for the
execution will be asked by the Ger
man emperor why the seeming undue haste in carrying out the death sentence was necessary. - The fact that there was no charge of espionage against Miss Cavell, but that she was executed for aiding Belgians of military age to join the Belgian army to fight against Germany, and also of aiding British and French soldiers to escape, has caused wonder that the death sentence had to be Imposed. The . explanation from German sources that ,. it was necessary, "if the authority of the court-martial
was to be maintained." is not accepted
here. Officials generally take the position that, because of her sex. imprisonment would have been sufficient, although admitting that so ; far as international law was concerned, the Germans acted within their rights.

Her Husband's Widow
The baronet sat down. He twirled the ends of his long mustache and considered the woman in the corner. "You are a bold woman, Jenny," he remarked, "Very bold to talk to me like that. You forget what I know." "I don't care twopence what you know," she declared with a snap of the fingers. "As to that diamond business, it was only a crime according to the law of Cape Colony, and nobody over here cares. Besides, I could cajl witnesses to prove that you were as guilty as I. Ah, that makes you fidget. That's why I sent for you to tell you ta. If I had had time to .take advice you wouldn't have got that money out of me." She had not taken advice, but she knew that -the lie would frighten him. She raised herself from her favorite recumbent posture, helped herself to a cigarette, and blew the first puff of smoke very deliberately in his direction. "Checkmate all around." she announced as she let her head drop back on the cushions. Sir Ralph rose to take his leave. He paused and stood looking across the table. "It's extraordinary," he said in an expostulatory tone, "that a shrewd woman like you should not see which
way your interest lies. Think what you are sacrificing for . the sake of that man a, ranker. Where in lies his charm I fail to see" "Youth good looks character courage." The baronet made a movement of impatience. "Not very marketable assets atod two of them highly perishable. Can't you see, Jenny, that we are natural allies? Come, now, retract that absurd story of your marriage. Or, rather; deny you ever said anything of the kind. If that girl stole the man you prize, here's a chance to get even with her." "By throwing her into his arms? Not if I know it." "And-do you expect me to let myself be done out of my inheritance because you are Jealous of Leslie?" cried the exasperated baronet. "For let me tell you once for all that I do not believe for one moment "that you ever were Steele's wife. I will take steps to prove that you weren't." She laughed derisively. "I should think you would find that jolly difficult. Go ahead. In any case I shouldn't be a party to swindling a baby out of hit inheritance." "Swindling? Why, it's mine by law."
