QUAKERS SHOW GREAT PROMISE i IN FIRST GAME

, BY H. H, DIDDLEBOCK.

Richmond Wgh : school has a good Basketball team, but those Quakers are about the best tttinr the writer has aees since the bis .world's aeries

was held at the Buffalo, exposition so many fears ago that thesvery thought of the intervening 'time makes gray hairs. - - ' . ; '- ' It was i truly an inspiring sight to

. watch the athlete perform, on the floor

. of the gymnasium last night. Every

one Of them appeared to be, in the pink

i of, condition, and they put up an exhibitkm of basketball that, made the blood circulate Just a little-faster.-

There' was dot a boy on the floor

. but that showed he was being benefited by the sport. There was no puffing

Or blowing, for they were all in fine

trim. -Coach Nofcr-'of the high school is

! responsible for this condition, and it

fs through his efforts that so mucfe Interest is beirig taken In the sport, that is the cleanest and best exercise Sn which a boy can indulge. It was a pleasure ot watch the play of the nimble Logan as he ran around the floor, the muscles of his brawny body standing out as he made one movement or another. He was here, there and everywhere, and when he Was needed he was always on the spot. Sehepman la Fast. Captain gchepman of the Quakers i IS another star. He is extremely fast I Oh his feet and an accurate shooter, in addition to guarding his man ac- ! curately. Parker is remarkably fast and shows

considerable skill in his work. His judgment is fine and his throwing almost perfect. Porter, Brown and young Parker of the high are clover and fast and give nromise of showing some fine stunts.

Merafida Is another fast and clever I boy who should make a record before ! the season is over. He has all the earmarks of being a classy boy. He has one trait that appeals and that is he ' is never looking for individual honors : b'ut is always working hard for the good of the team. He. follows his man closely all the time. It will take a I mighty clever player to score many goals against him. Last night the score in the practice game was rather One-sided. It Is sufficient to say that the Quai kers are some team and that the high . school boys Will be able to hold their ' own when it comes down to hardpan.

AtTRQGIt SAVS JOHUSOU : GREATEST BALL PITCHER

Kick Altrock, who in his prime, as a member of the world's champion Chicago White Sox (American League) team, was regarded as one of the greatest, pitchers in ,the big leagues? was in Richmond yesterday, eeiroute to Chicago, visiting friends and relatives.' . - " ' ; r - - - - - ' ." Nick is now, and has been . for several years,-, pitching coach and premier comedian of the Washington American league team. . His antics on the coaching lines have made him as famous as a baseball comedian as was Once his fame as pitcher. According to Nick there Is only one real pitcher in baseball today, Walter Johnson, the speed ball artist of the Washingtons. - , :-- - v"v"; J,This here Johnson bird was better1 this year than ever before," enthusiastically declared . Nick. "The last game he worked against Detroit be struck out Vltt, Bush, Cobb, Crawford and Veach on fifteen pitched balls. On the

square they never even got a foul ball offn him. Crawford never even took

Bill Donovan says, 'Nick, thank the Lord that Swede's got control of his fast one 'cauBe if the ever gets, wild he is going to kill f every 'player in the league..-1" .";.' i' --".;- " "In one game -.Johnson -.hit Oscar Vitt in the forehead with -one of his

EAIJUIAM SQUAD IS TO MEET SOHE FAST ONES

Prospects for ..a .strong basket bal team: at Earlham this year are bright and a schedule of fourteen games has been, arranged , m ;--' ' Such teams as Indiana, DePauw' and Ifurdue will be on' the schedule and a special trip will .be made by , the team during the the Christmas "holidays ?when some of the fastest teams in the middle west will be taken on.' . Four letter men will play on this year's team. They are Winslow, captain, Meeks, Morrisch and Qulgg. All of them are fast and clever players and are a team in themselves. - Besides these boys Earlham has a squad of fifty men among whom are

STEVENS WINS FIGHT

Tommy Stevens of Columbus, O., fresh from his victory over Frankie Mason aWiluacie-latnight, was. in, town this-morning, cbjpperas a. atk and without a' mark to show for his encounter. Stevens won front Mason on a foul In the fifth round but to listen to him warble you would think he had won with a knockout on the first punch. Tommy is a nice little boy all right and is a wonderful press agent for himself, but Just the same reports from Muncie say that Mason kept him stepping all the way.

ATTENDS REUNION

Mr. and Mrs. John Markley of this city, are the only Wayne county persons who will attend the annual reunion of the Eighth and Eighteenth Indiana regiments, which are holding a reunion at , Marion this week. They left this morning for Marion and will return tomorrow.

NIGK ALTROCK HERE ; TO ACT AS ARBITER

There will be a battle royal at Athletic park Sunday when Richmond and Cambridge City meet for the final game for the Wayne county championship. Cambridge City is the only team that has won a game, from Richmond in this "serious,", and there is sure to be a large crowd and unbounded enthusiasm if the weather is favorable, which trifling matter has already been arranged with the Weather Man. The same teams will appear on the field, but there will be an interesting change in umpires. Nick Altrock, the famous comedian of the Washington American league team, Who is visiting his sister, will be the umpire behind the bat. As Nick is a circus in himself and one of the biggest attractions in the big league, many will be there to watch his work.
