The "Standpat" Aattitudc. The attitude of the standpat Republican organization to that most needed of reforms, the removal of the tariff from politics, was aptly stated last Saturday by the Rushville Republican, the ultra reactionary personal organ of James Eli Watson, candidate for the Republican nomination for United States senator. , We quote from the Republican the following : "There has been much, said of late about a non-partisan tariff commission and the removal of the tariff question from politics. The latter appears to be the high-flown sayings of dreamers and demagogues who want to befog the real political questions. "It seems preposterous to talk of removing the tariff from politics when the tariff is one of the ..f0remost basic principles that draws a distinct line of demarkation between the Republican and Democratic parties." ' , We recommend a thorough digestion of this reactionary sentiment by all independent voters who have been contemplating supporting the : Republican ticket at the general elections in 1916. Another Argument Shattered. I The ultra pacificists are having a hard time ! these days to stem the tide of the nation-wide

movement demanding adequate military, protection for the country. ; " ' ' First they offered treaties as sufficient guarantees for the continued peaceofJ the "Republic. That argument 'was knocked out by the German invasion of Belgium and the violation of (Greek neutrality .by. the landing of Allied forces at Salonika. , : The swarming of the Teutonic , hordes into France and Russia haa in turn refuted the arguments of the William Jennings Bryans, the HenryFords and the Andrew Carnegies that the United States is too great a nation to ever suffer from. invasion. . " r--Now in their third line of defense, the antipreparation theorists are shouting that after the world war the belligerent powers will be exhausted, consequently harmless. : v I ! r Replying to this argument; an observing American diplomat, Eric Fisher Wood, writing in the current issue of Century, says V ": " ' ; 'The precedents of history prove' the; exact reverse to be true. Nations are never so strong morally and politically, and their armies are never so effective, as immediately following a long

conflict. 'Practice makes perfect Greece was never stronger than after Plataea and Salamis, nor Rome than after the second Chaginian War. The Netherlands were politically the most powerful at the termination of forty years of combat with Spain, during which they were on the receiving end of( nearly every blow. In 1862, France dared to disregard the Monroe Doctrine and invade Mexico to protect her citizens from persecution by the irresponsible savages who inhabit that territory. In 1866 she meekly agreed to abandon Mexico and Maximilian, for even Napoleon Third had no wish to try conclusions with the veteran army that marched down Pennsylvania ave., in May, 1865." -

Kitty Carothers Gives Advice to Young Persons and An- , swers Inquiries About Affairs of Heart.

j Dear -MlM 'Carotbers During my college vacation this year I chanced to meet' a young , lady on the tennle courts. I have played tennia with her for several weeks every day, and I have grown fond of her. Not only that, but 1 sincerely feel that Move her. She told me recently that it - was her ; indention' to receive private " tutoring in France this fall, and inasmuch as I am proficient in the language, 1 have offered my services. ' How ever, I insist upon receiving no fee in return. Naturally enough, she refuses 'to accept my -tutoring. ' .E. O.

Naturally enough you do not want to accept a fee for your services from the girl for, whom you care. On the other hand, she, undoubtedly does not feel justified in taking up your time without in afly way recompensing you. Try to make her feel that the privilege of -doing this -work with, her means a great, deal to you, and if she -insists that :she can not accept your services quite- free, try to. compromise by suggesting that she give you a bit of her; handiwork or some book which you are very anxious to own for Christmas.?: '.

The observations follow In installments, the first of which is appended:. .. .. .... HEALTH. Richmond has always had the reputation of being a healthy situation. 1821, the "Weekly InteHigencer" mentions the situation ,of the town' as "markably healthy." And under date of 7th mo. 24th, 1824. a death is announced in the '-'Public Leger." "Died On Sunday night last, of in flammatlon of the lungs. Benamln Albertson, a member of the Society, of Friends.'- This Is the first death in thi3 town since the first of November." And I well remember that this death the only one during nearly nine months, in a population of almost half

a thousand, created such a sensation.

throughout the village, that an enquiry was set on foot to ascertain the cause of the sickness, and if possible to remove it, that others might not fall victims to it. No other ostensible cause appearing, the citizens, duly armed with scythes and rakes, met upon the commons, mowed the abundant dogfennel, (Maruta cotula.) . raked into heaps and burned it. '. In the days of the "Public Leger" at Richmond, and the "Western Em

good deal of sparring between the editors on behalf of their respective vil
