Not even a world series victory can bring to Grover Alexander half the pleasure that comes to him in beating the Pirates. And this is the story; , Back in 1910 Barney Dreyfuss heard about the big star-board hurler who then was with the Syracuse club In the New York State league. Barney looked over Alexander or had one of his scouts do It and decided that Alexander was entirely too green. So Barney passed him up. Horace E. Fogel, then president of the Phillies, heard about Alexander about the same time, watched him during several games, and decided to grab him. Fogel ingenuously "shooed" away other scouts, balked at paying the big price that one of the owners of the club asked for Alexander, and finally secured him in draft for $750. Almost from his first day with the Phillies Alexander was a star. When mid-season came in 1911 his name was on every tongue of fandom. And then it was that Barney Dreyfuss won the undying enmity of the great twirler. Somebody evidently asked Barney why he didn't sign up Alexander when he had an chance. Probably intimating that Barney had made a big error in judgment. Barney, to alibi himself; was quoted in the papers as saying that he could have signed up Alexander but he kept "off of him because Alexander's habits were bad. Alexander, whose habits are and ever have been models for every youth, saw that article, and went white with rage when he read it. Throwing down the paper he hunted up President Fogel and Manager Charlie Dooin. "I'd like to ask a favor," he said. "What is it?" asked Fogel. "That you give me permission to pitch two out of every four games we
play against the Pirates," answered Alexander. "Why do you want to do that?" was asked. "Because 1 want to beat his club to even'up for what he is publicly quoted as saying about me." Alexander's request was granted and the records show that over a fouryear stretch the Pirates have beaten Alexander only two or three times, and those Pirate victories came through Phillie errors.
LICHTENFELS LOSES ALL GAMES IN ROW
PASSED UP SPEAKER. Barney Dreyfuss also had a chance to sign up Tris Speaker, but Barney blundered and the Red Sox later secured the man who ranks among the greatest outfielders of the age. Back in 1907, when Speaker was busting fences in the Texas league, Barney got the tip on him. Barney went to Texas and watched Speaker in action. He was greatly impressed with his playing, but noticed that several times during the game, while his club was at bat, Speaker quitted the dugout and went off into a corner under the grand stand. "Why is that?" asked Barney. "What does he do?" "Oh, I guess he's gone to take a little smoke," answered Barney's companion. "Smoke? Smoke? Say, does he smoke cigarettes?" "Sure, he smokes a lot of them." "Smokes cigarettes, hey," mused Barney. "Well, he ain't for me. I won't have cigarette smokers on my team. They never amount to anything." And Barney went away from there without Speaker.
WAVERLY ELECTRIC POPULAR AT SHOW
St. Louis started the 1916 auto show season with a pavilion exhibit at Forest Park gardens. The combination of open air" effect with abundant protection from the weather formed an attractive feature. Among the cars exhibited none attracted more attention than the two Waverly electric broughams embodying as they do two widely different types of electrical and mechanical construction, f The Waverly 1916 light four is in every respect a departure from previous structural types offered by this company. The car is mounted on a complete steel chassis with long, full floating cantilever rear springs and semi elliptic front springs. The drive is of the worm gear type with a single reduction perpendicular to the axle. . The controller is of the continuous torque type with single lever for forward and reverse, operating in horizontal plane over the steering lever.

HUPP AUTOS GAIN FAVOR ON ISLAND
Hupmobiles continue to be the most popular machines in the Philippine Islands according to statistics just received by Vive-President Jos. R. Drake of the Hupp Motor Car Co., from the Philippine automobile directory of registered motor vehicles up to June 30, 1915. In fact, there are more Hupmobiles in Uncle Sam's Western possession than any other two makes and within six of being double as many as any other automobile of any price. According to the latest statistics published by the Estrella Auto Palace of Man ilia there are 488 Hupmobiles registered with a well known popular priced make second with 247, and the third with 228. Registration in the Philippines are given out semi-annually and the Hupmobile has led by a wide margin in the last four reports covering a period of 2Vi years. This is the second report in which the Detroit-made car shows a higher total than the next two leading machines.
When the Earlham team left early this morning for Lexington, Ky., to do battle with Kentucky State university, the entire student body rolled out to give it an enthusiastic farewell. The students feel that the Quakers have the best chance in years of holding the strong Kentuckians down to a low score, although there are few with hopes so sanguine as to predict a victory. Coach Whitesides took a squad of sixteen men. He will send the following lineup into the game: Meeks and Hutton, ends; Pennington and Mills, tackles; Cox and Calvert, guards; Don Calvert, center; Fellers, quarter; Bowen, full; Ed and' Dale Mills, halves. Substitutes who made the trip were: Arnett, Canady, Reece, Peacock and Bruner.

ACCEPT CHESTER
Continued From Page One. heard recently in regard to the Chester pike I want the public and taxpayers to know why I did not sign an affidavit for the acceptance of the road. It is said there have been hard feelings between Mr. Foster and myself. If there has been, I know nothing of it. I simply refused to sign because the road was never finished. "I was over the road with Mr. Peacock, Commissioners Anderson, Doddridge and Linderman. I showed them all the defects. They said they would hold back $250 and have the contractor finish the work. There has been nothing done except dumping seven loads of coarse crushed rock, placed in places on the road and in the ditches. I have been over the
road with the officials three times. The commissioners and engineer knew as well as I know the road has never been finished. I want them
to tell why they paid any of the reserve until the road was accepted by the superintendent and engineer as the specifications read." ,
