Her Husband s Widow

5 Erdsley pointed to- a documeut spread out on the desk before him. Sir Falph recognized it at once as the copy of a certificate of marriage. He picked it up and glanced across the vertical columns. It certified that Victor Steele, sergeant, had been married by license to Leslie Morne, spinster, at the Register Office, Hounslow, on October 4, 19 , the witnesses being Sergeants Terence O'Rourke and David Gilchrist.

The baronet gave a prolonged whis-j

tie and laid the paper down again. He thrust his thumbs into his waistcoat pocket and looked at his friend. "How's that, umpire?" asked Mr. Erdsley, with much self-complacency. "It settles Steele's game with the widow, doesn't it?" - Sir Ralph thought that it settled a much bigger game, but with admirable

"The girl may be dead or divorced though that's unlikely, I admit. Besides, it doesn't follow that because Mrs. Melas can't jnarry him she will marry me." f "Hang it all, Gaveston!" cried the 'other man disgustedly, "I never knew ,such a chap to throw .cold water on another fellow's schemes! Here have I been to the trouble of putting a spoke in your rival's wheel, and you don't so much as thank me!" "Well, if my thanks are any good to you, dear boy, I'm sure you're welcome to them or even to some liquid refreshment. But before we go, what about squaring that rag? I've got a 'few thousand together never mind how and it may with economy just tide us over "this crisis. Suppose you ring up Sneedle and ask him to step round here at once." "He'll think we want to give him a thrashing." "He'li chance it. I'll bet he's been expecting to hear from us a long time past. Meanwhile I'll step round to my bank and pay this check in. Then

I'll pay in a check to the syndicate's arrrimt WTa rain hnvf a llfink on the

I ay down. Excited at the prospect of an enVunter with the hated financial Jour

nalist, Erdsley seemed to forget for the moment his discovery in the marriage register. But its full significance was not lost upon Sir Ralph. He walked slowly back from the bank to allow himself time to decide on his course of action. Steele had married Leslie. He at once dismissed the possibility of a divorce having taken place. Leslie had, wittingly or unwittingly, married his cousin while her first husband was alive, therefore her child was not Varney's heir. He, Sir Ralph, was. To be Varney's heir was not likely to help him much, seeing that he was so much older than his cousin, and also that a great portion of the property could be transferred by will. If he had made this discovery he would "perhaps have kept quiet on the chance of Varney predeceasing him and leaving no will. But in any case that pos

sibility was very remote, and now i there was the danger of Erdsley's pur-!

suing his investigations further, and j establishing the identity of Leslie j Morne with Leslie Varney. He must j act at once and drive the best bar- j gain he could with his cousin before i

his confederate forestalled him. He telephoned to Wilton place, and was informed that he would probably find Mr. Varney at his club. He rang up the club and presently heard Os

wald's voice. Sir Ralph Decides j To Tell His Ccusin. j "I want to see you this afternoon, old chap, on urgent family business," j said the baronet. I "Family business!" Oswald's tone Sounded gruff. "All right, I suppose I must see you. Come around here when you like. I shall be here all the afternoon.

Sir Ralph returned to the office in time to see a short, bull-necked man, clad in a gray frock coat, ascending the stairs to his office. He followed him up and cannoned between him and Erdsley. Having disposed of Mrs. Bneedle with a substantial check, Sir kalph took up his hat and leaned over Erdsley's desk. "Give me that certifi?ate," he answered. "I may be able to tackle Mrs. Melas this afternoon."

Looking at him somervhat suspic-1

lously, his partner handed him the document. With this in the pocket of his tightly buttoned morning ccat he was 3 riven to Black's in St. James's street. Oswald, looking very listless and

bored, greeted him in the ' smoking room. ' ' . "Glad to see you, my dear chap. I don't know why, but I find the town awfully dull this season what? The fact, is, I miss Leslie. I am going up 167 Scotland tomorrow to bring her back if I can." Sir Ralph looked preternaturally grave. Oswald surveyed him . with amused surprise and toid him to sit down. He ordered two liquers. When the waiter had brought these and gone away he asked what was the matter. "Family matters. I think you said?" "Yes, Oswald, my boy, I have made a very serious a most unpleasant dis-

J covery. Believe me, I'm deeply sorry jto be the bearer of such tidings.' I " "Great Scott! Nothing wrone with

Leslie or the youngster, is there?" ask

ed Oswald, paling. These last few days he had been yearning for a sight of his wife and child, and ; only his respect for Leslie's wishes had curbed his desire to rush to them. "I have had no news about their health, said Gaveston. I 'have the doubt that they are well. But my news does ' concern - them very- intimately.' - He sighed and finished his liquer. Oswald drew his 'chair closer and attempted to tead his secret in his face. "Well, out with it!" he said roughly. "I have no idea 'at' present what you can be talking about." "Well, I want to know first that I'm not making a mistake," began the baronet. "I want you - to tell me something about Leslie. I do not ask out of idle curiosity. Who was-she?"

"She was the niece of James Morven, the man who married Lucy. ; I didn't think you needed to be told that. It doesn't matter who her father was. She passed under the name of Leslie Morne. When I met her she was twenty." ' . v.,.v:- .v.; ' "Yes. I think I knew all that But what was she doing when you first met her? What had she been doing in the year previous?" 5"Good heavens! you're not going to tell me she was a. convict,-are you? She was an assistant in a book shop In Bond street the place is "there still. Before that let me see!" Oswald pulled at the end of his moustache and was evidently cudgling his brains. "Well, the fact is, I've never bothered her with inquiries about her past. I think she was a governess or something of that sort. Has any other relative of hers turned up and left her a fortune?" - -"No," said Gaveston, slowly. "Not

that. It's a case of losing a fortuae not getting one. Now about Captain Steele" -v .- ; . , "What has he got to do with itr "You will see presently. Did your wife admit that she ever met him before?" .-. "Met Steele before!" Oswald looked

at his cousin in blank astonishment. "Never before we met at Jerusalem. Of course not." , ' Sir Ralph got up and paced back wards and forwards, his eyes Tixed on the floor, -apparently in great -agitation and perplexity. He stopped in front of his kinsman and tried to look compassionte. "I've got a bad shock for you, my boy, so prepare yourself for it. I wish Leslie were here; but no, I couldn't say it before her. The fact is" he looked round to make sure that no member or waiter was within earshot and whispered "the fact is she isn't

your wife. She deceived you. She's Steele's wife." Oswald's hand stopped la the act of conveying his cigar to bis mouth. He sat rigid, looking fixedly at Sir Rain. Every drop of blood seemed to have deserted his face. . " s "Not my wife! Steel's!" he stammered. "Are you mad or drunk?" "Look at this." Sir Ralph produced the certificate of marriage and placed it in Oswald's hand. - The unfortunate - man . made an exclamation and let the paper fall on his knees. For a second he lay back speechless, his eyes half closed; then he seized - the liquer which stood so far untasted on. the table and gulped it down. ' To Be Continued. GIBSON IS FINED
