mum LEADS OTHER AUDITORS GETTING TAXES

Wayne county leads the state in collecting delinquent taxes, said County Auditor Bowman today., Mr. Bowman returned today from the convention of the ' County Auditors' association, which was held at Indianapolis yesterday in - connection with the County Commissioners' convention. The new system of bookkeeping used by the auditor and treasurer In Wayne county has enabled the treasurer to collect $9,000 more delinquent taxes each year thin was possible under the old system. Instead of dropping from the list the . delinquent taxes after two years has past, as is done by practically every other county in the state, the list Is carried forward from one year to another. -System Explained. ? This system was explained before

the auditors' convention yesterday by

Mr. Bowman, who spoke on the sub

ject, "Delinquent Taxes and Manner

of Collection." The new system of bookkeeping, which was explained by the Wayne county auditor, was not taken favorably by most of the county

auditors present because of the in

creased amount of work falling upon

the auditor. The county treasurer re

ceives the fees. During the past year in Wayne county. Treasurer Chamness

received. $1,350 In fees from delin quent tax collection.

It Is estimated that $25,845 will be collected this year from the delinquent

tax list. Last year $22,400 was col

lected. In 1914 the amount waB $17,-

742, and in 1912 It was $16,997, show

ing an increase each year since the re

vised system of bookkeeping was in stalled.

At the present time there are taxes

amounting to $63,068 on the- treasur

er s books which have gone delinquent

This includes all the delinquent taxes and not merely those of the past two years, as was the former custom of

reporting delinquents.

SUBJECT OF COUHSE

FOR RURAL SCHOOLS

fewing is the most popular domestic

science subject among the teachers in? the rural schools, according to Supervisor Grace L. King. Under a

recent ruling of the state board of education, it is optional with the teachers this year which branch of domestic science they teach and most of them have chosen sewing.

fi nere are several reason for thin "

aid Miss Kins: todav. "Mmt f tfc

teschers are better acquainted with teaching sewing than any of the other

sowecis ana very few of the schools art equipped to teach cooking." Miss King has comnletAit her flr

virits to all the schools and is well

pleased with the co-operation of the teachers.

Several of the teachers have chosen

to teach the subject generally known as "food and shelter," which is a study of better housing conditions and questions affecting the home. .This division of the work is new in the state, said Miss King, and only a few of the teachers are well enough trained to handle the subject as well as either cooking or sewing.

AUSTR1ANS ASK "Y" TO TEACH WIVES ENGLISH

Enthusiastic to the extent of intimating their desire that their wives and children be accorded the same privileges and opportunity, 33 foreigners, natives of Austria-Hungary and Italy, assembled in Whitewater school house last night and listened to an explanation, through an interpreter, of the night school at which they will be instructed In the use of the English language under .the direction of the Y. M. C. A. , The officala,' who had charge of the meeting, Secretary Learner of the association, Henry Deuker and Principal D. D. Ramsey of the Whitewater school,, could not under the circumstances, promise .that, immediate con

sideration could be given to' the teaching of English to the wives and children of the foreigners but hopes that in the future, conditions may be such that the matter can be put Into concrete action. ' '- - :vi v-. - - Beca'use of . the inclement weather, the officials : were surprised - at the large number. It is expected that the enrollment will be Increased to more than 60 men and,, last night's attendance , indicated the necessity of employing two teachers instead of one as was the first intention. . ;

RICIOHD OBSERVES "PREVENTION DAY"

i Appropriate recognition of "Disease Prevention Day" was given in Richmond today through the Commercial club and public schools. The day was

set aside by the state as a means of

calling to the attention of the people

the necessity for taking precaution to guard against the spread of Infections and to emphasise' the superior utility of prevention as compared to cure. ; In the schools, upon the recommendation of Superintendent J. T. Giles, compositions in English by the pupUs and students were devoted to the subject of disease prevention. The teachers in some of the schools gave brief talks, too. pointing out ways in which the children could eliminate disease through cleanliness. ' Superintendent Giles was unable to say whether special programs .had been held in any of the schools as he had left this matter entirely to the principals. " .,
