Her Husbands Widow
Captain Steele Has Stormy Interview with the Queen of Diamonds
SYNOPSIS. I Leslie Morne, a governess, goes to walk by the sea and is Bpoken to by a man she does not know. She is rescued from his attentions by Victor Steele, sergeant in the British army, whom she later marries. She finds married life wearisome and refuses to follow Steele to Egypt Then she hears of his death and conceals the fact that she is his widow. Four years later, married to Oswald Varney and mother : of a boy, she meets Steele face to face : in Jerusalem. He tells her to keep the past sacret and her husband announces that Steele is going to sail,; With thern. She later meets Steele on a liner and also, becomes acquainted with Mrs.-Melas and learns what jealousy means. CHAPTER XIX. "I see," said Jenny. "Well, I can't 'say this is very sudden, for I suspected that, you were leading up to a proposal. Your methods remind me of the old gag about blackguarding the plaintiff's attorney." She giggled, as she always did when disconcerted or in doubt how to proceed. She looked the baronet up and down, quizzically, critically. He cut a fine and aristocratic figure in his Sa-vile-row evening clothes, and in the shaded light of the lamps might have passed for forty-five or thereabouts. The suggestion of dissipation about him was not altogether distasteful to a woniancompletely' enamored of .the gay life. ' He shrugged his shoulders. ' "I'm aware," he admitted,' '"that 'It sounds mean to give another man away like tnis, nut you Know tne saying, "ah s fair in love and war.' Steele has stolen a march on me. Sir Ralph waved his long thin hand. "Oh, my dear girl, I know that type. He's risen from the people and poses as a plain, straightforward, pure-minded Englishman. No doubt he has represented me to you as an awful example of our effete aristocracy as a roue, a profligate, LOrd knows what!" The woman again interrupted him. "He hasn't, in point "of fact, but if he had he wouldn't be far wrong, would he?" Sir Ralph took the cigarette from his lips and blew out a cloud of smoke with an air of impatient contempt. "There's no humbug about me, anyway I never pretended to be a saint.. I've gone the pace in my. time and never grudged the price I paid. Do you suppose all these outsiders who hold- up their hands atus in horror . wouldn't do the same If they had the chance? It's jealousy, mere class jealousy, I tell you. ;And my young ' friend . Steele proves it. A pretty story -on my word! Gets round some poor .little devil of ' a nursemaid, gets her sacked from her situation, then- leaves her in the lurch." "How do you know-he did?"- -' "Well, what's become of her?" Sir Ralph thought rapidly. He was an unerring judge of character, and he knew that Steele would never reveal the identity of that nursemaid. "Ask him" he challenged her daringly. "Ask him what he did with her the Hastings girl. But what's the use? Of course he will lie any man would." "Yes, that's quite true," assented Jenny eagerly. "All men are liars, especially about women, and if we deceive them then oh, my hat!" , Sir Ralph Plays the Role of Sweetheart. Gaveston saw his advantage and pressed it home. "Quite so," he said, with a cynical smile, "and that's where you would find an advantage in accepting me. You wouldn't shock me. I've had my fling, and I'm not the man to resent you having had yours." Jenny looked up at him quickly. "I don't know if you have entertained the idea of marrying this virtuous plebeian, but if you did, you must expect him to read you homilies every day on the domestic virtues and the worth of true womanhood. Besides he's after your money." "You are, you mean," Jennie taunted him. The Lancashire mill girl was apparent in her just then. "My dear girl," said the baronet, folding his arms on the table and looking at her, "if it was only money that I was after, I could always find eone rich woman fool enough to buy the title of Lady Gaveston. If you rile your charms so low as to think it only your money that I care for, thfefi, comparing me with Steele, you must admit that I am able to offer you . that little a title in exchange. You would i:ake a fine' Lady Gaveston ! " he concluded, with a simulated burs! of admiration. He could see that ' she relished the description. She stood silent, looking into the darkness. "Well," she said, with a nervou3 laugh, "we've had a very interestins conversation, haven't we? Mind f you, -I'm not. going .to; pecept what you say about Captain Steele -vithout questioning him. Do you ol-

Irregular living, and perhaps an uneasy conscience had played haToc with nerve and muscle alike. They were in, Paris, where, a man can be called to account with his life for an attack on another's honor. He went a shade paler as be replied: "I leave that to your discretion. You must, however' remember that what I told you I had in confidence from another man, whose name, of course, I couldnot betray.'! 5 j ir ' ' t "I see. It's awkward about Mrs. Varney, for I like her, and I can't risk saying too much for fear of it reaching her husband's ears. Well, "as to your proposal" "Yes?" The baronet sprang to his and fixed his eyes on her. "Well, I suppose I may consider the offer open for another week or two?" "The door of my heart remains open to you always," said Sir Ralph, bowing low. " -y Vexed at the moment of his capture in the vestibule of Varney's hotel by Mrs. Melas, Victor returned to bis own hotel that night grateful for the distraction of her companionship. He had been profoundly depressed by the tone of Leslie's letter which Varney had shown him. 1 It was plain to him that she was passing through some painful mental crisis, and. it was impossible not to connect that with one of other of the events of the recent voyage. HePaya a Visit to , y the Charming Widow. , Someone tapped at - the door. He was .wanted on the telephone. As soon as he put the receiver to his ear he recognized Jenny's voice. "Hullo! Is that Captain Steele?" "I'm Steele. You're Jenny, I think. ' Yes, I'll come round at once. I was coming to say good-bye. I leave by the midday train." He found Mrs. Melas in her private sitting room. Storm signals were out; her bright eyes sparkled dangerously, as he spoke of - govern ment business. "Oh, the government!" Jenny stamped her foot. "I don't see why government business should interfere the very moment I come to Paris. It's too bad of you, Vicky, to go away like this." "It cuts me to the heart, Jenny, my own," returned Victor m the tone of bandinage in which he generally spoke to Mrs. Melas, "'but when duty calls " . vl -' y : :; ,"Bother you anfl your duty," burst out his companion angrily "There's a woman in the case; that's why you're going to London to meet her." - She began to pace the room, breathing bard. He watched her uneasily. "I've heard something," she said, silencing him with . uplifted . Anger, "through all sorts of indirect channels." She stopped 'and faced him. "It's about that girl at Hastings ah! you do remember. "Tell me first," she hissed,'-clenching her upraised hands, "if you were In love with the girl who was she what became of her? He surveyed - her contemptuously. He felt sure of his ground now. "My dear Jenny. I will satisfy your very impertinent curiosity on two out of three points. I was in love with her yes. I was free to be, I suppose? 'Who was she?' That, of course, I'm not going to tell you. '.What became of her?' She married another man. Are you satisfied. "No, I'm not satisfied," she screamed "You stand there and tell me you loved her! After you met me! A wretched pasty-faced little English nursemaid! . She's married yes, when you had done with her, I don't doubt. Answer me. Did you do the girl any harm?" Victor shrugged his shoulders. "I am not a scoundrel, as you seem to suggest. I did not - behave toward that girl in the way you imagine. Now, perhaps, you will be good enough to tell me where you heard all this and why I am catechised in this manner?" r Their eyes met. V You know very well why I catechise you," she said. "You know without my telling you how I feel toward you how y I have always felt. I'm not going : to tell you over again." He was glad of the diversion . the confession afforded ' him, painful though it would have been and intensely unwelcome at any other time. "It's you are the humbug," he retorted, "trying to persuade me that you care for me when you admit yourself that you are over here to marry a man of title. From the way that old bounder Gaveston spoke of you I should suppose that you had held out hopes to him." "Well, whs sot?" If I can't get the man I love I will take the man that Jore3 me.'" 'After all. 'why should I care," she

What do you know?" She . wrenched' herself away and faced him, tense and rigid. "I know everything," she screamed; "I saw it all on the boat. Pretending to flirt with me in order to throw dust in that fool Varney'a eyes! She's in Scotland, he tells me; very queer. Pining for you, no doubt! Well, she shan't have you. You belong to me, Vic, and I'll tell Leslie Varney that to her face.
