Discipline England at the beginning of the war was not a highly organized state. It is not yet organized. Even those who are not "slackers" did not know enough of , the state to offer intelligently their cervices. " The good disciplinarian effects of the war have been so obvious that even pacifists recognize them. Prof. Patrick Geddes, in a lecture
course at Kfes colise, noted the effect upon youxg EicHshmn, ' , . - "They are better set up," he said, "manlier than they were; they are restrained, vitalized, and disciplined, as peace did sot vitxiira or discipltee." ' Society in the United States is even less organized than was England. We have had tests of it. The records of our police departments constantly show our condition Our people are zealous, generous, self-sacrificing. But in our crisis our police cannot trust them. They discovered long ago that as dabblers in heroism Americans cannot be beaten.' ;- Our people will not fall readily into organization. They insist upon being self-governing units. Subordination is a virtue we have : not learned. Our general feeling about it was that it is a total .waste. English pacifists assert that we are mistaken. ..War has its by-products, and one of the good ones is discipline. Without war this by-product is still possible. A universal military education would teach us to subordinate ourselves - in times of - trouble without making sheep of us. Chicago Tribune, v

i Few wbo see wild animals In cases
realize the rast amount of trouble. daner and expense necessary to set them there. Toe greatest danger lies in capturing the wild animals in their natlre country. With the Carl Hegen-beck-Wallace Clrucus, which will gire two performances in Richmond, on Thursday, Sept. 16, there are several
hundred wild animals, most of which
were captured In the. forests and Jon gles of their native country.
i There Is no more ticklish or danger
ous task than tracking lions in the vast Nubian deserts. The scorching
tun pours down with such force that
few men can stand it. The effect on
the eyes Is blinding. There is little or
no shade. The wariest and most careful hunter may be tracking an animal, and at the same time be tracked by the animal he is seeking, who may
spring on him at any moment. .
For capturing full grown lions large
traps of various forms are used. One trap la square, one of the sides lifting
upon a string' like the- oid-rashionea mouse trap. .This trap is baited with
a piece of fresh meat, and as soon as the lion has entered the trap the
door shuts down and he is a prisoner.
More than a score of lions with the
Carl Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus were
captured in this manner. KICK OF HORSE CAUSES MAN TO KILL HIMSELF

Talks With Lovers Kitty Carothers Gives Advice to Young Persons and Answers Inquiries About Affairs of Heart.
' Thou shalt have at least one night a week "out." This commandment for the husband may prevent growth of the feeling that he Is tied to the home and prevent it from palling on him. It is not necessarily meant that the husband must go to the club, lodge, or business place, just to get away from his wife. There are few men who do not have at least one occasion a week for being away from home at night tor awhile. The wife should expoet this and be reasonable in her demands on her husband's time. However, one. of the best kinds of a night out Is for both husband and wife to go somewhere together, a good play, a little social gathering, or even a movtev This gtvas them new topics of conversation and broader interests. Both return home rested and somehow with, a deeper appreciation of the value of the other's love.

I don't believe he is true to me. I am afraid all men are false. J. M. B. If you are not engaged to marry the young man he has a perfect right to recleve letters from and pay visits to other girls. For that matter there is nothing wrong after yon are married but he would not then write love letters, and you should know about them. A woman has the same privileges. Try "to control your jealousy and if you really love the young man show that yon trust him and try In every womanly way to make yourself so lovable that he will declare his intentions.

HOW GRAIN WAS AROUND. -In the stories of pioneer days, reference to trips to mills to have graia ground are. often made The early settlers of RScnmond probably used tae expedient of toe pioneers. A hardWood tree stump was burned out for a mortar, and by using a wood pasted the grain was smashed Into flour. In time this was supplanted by handmills. An upper, pierced stone laid on the aether stone, was revolved on a large wooden -pin. by a handle
iaserted ta tta edge and grasped by a woman or man who traveled around In a circle until a crude flour was produced. Old- mills in Wayne county usually were located along the creeks where water power could be utilized In grinding jrain. One of the famous old mills of the county stood where the lake in Glen Miller park now is. These early mills were first sheltered In . pole sheds, la log cabin mills, and then in f ram aad stone buildings. Buhr stone, a form of silica as hard as flint bua not so brittle, was used In mill machinery. These stones were cut tour to six inches in diameter, a number of pieces, bound together with iron hoops. The grinding surface of each stone was dressed, or grooved into furrows, slanting and perpendicular. These sharp edges of the grooves grinding against each other cut the previously cleaned grain to pieces. A hopper fed the grain into a hole of the upper stone aad by centrifugal force it was thrown into a spout and carried by means of an elevating shaft to an upper floor and there sifted by a rotary process Into fine . flour, seconds or
