USE CITY AUTO TO TAKE TRIP TO CINCINNATI " ,.,: Only One Official Authorized to Attend Convention of Fire Chiefs, But Others Go Along.
ESCORT CHIEF MILLER Officials Not Finding Room J in CityEngineeVs Automobile Take Train to Ohio City. Fire Chief Miller, authorized to attand the national conTention of fire chiefs at Cincinnati at the expense of the city, wai escorted by a small army of city officials when toe departed for Cincinnati this morning. Some went in a municipal automobile, the one belonging- to the engineer's deVertment.. otberea who could not find room on this , conveyance went .by train. If aay Richmond citizen has any deubts as to whether this city will be fittingly represented at the fire chief's convention he has only to glance at the following list of municipal hired men who escorted Fire Chief Miller as volunteer delegates: City Engineer Charles. City Clerk Bescher, Board Members Bavis, Mar latt and McMlnn, Supt. Kleinknecht of the city electric plant, police chauffeur Wenger, and firemen Clarence Lane and Bill Kenney. The "Junketing" . germ having severely bitten practically every member of Mayor Robbins' official family the past year as a 'result of frequent Inspection pilgrimages about tne country the fact that the city only "stood for" the expenses of Chief Miller on this occasion did not hinder his volunteer escort from accompanying him. Pay Own Expenses. ; ' . They decided they would have a profitable time at Cincinnati even if they had to pay their own expenses. These expenses will not be heavy, however, for those who shipped aboard the engineer's auto. It' would have been of benefit to Building Inspector Hodgln and to the city for him to have attended the convention, where he could have heard lectures on the work of fire prevention an important duty he is intrusted with, but council did not see fit to make an appropriation for his travel ing expenses. Hodgln decided that it was not up to him to attend the convention at his own expense. Last Monday night council appro priated $25 for Howard Gluys. chief engineer of the municipal plant, to attend the convention of electrical engineers at Columbus, O. The inspection has not been complet ed but the data secured Is ready for compilation. The instructions given by the. commissioners asking the engineers to make estimates on the probable ex pense of repairing the bridge with a detailed description of every . part found defective, is causing the -com' missioners much more work than was expected. In many cases it is impossible to determine the exact condition until part of the bridge is dismantled so that it will be impossible to get a complete report on this one feature. It Is understood that-the engineers have practically decided that the bridge cannot be repaired with any assurance of Bafety in the future, If the interurban cars are run over it. Within all probability they will find that the bridge can be repaired satisfactor ily if the Interurban cars are kept off, which Is impossible on account of the franchise the company holds with the city. The report of the engineers will be completed Friday, according to one of the engineers today. SECOND DEATH NOTE DEEPENS PLOT CASE GARY, Ind., Sept. 1. More myBtery was thrown about the gigantic nationwide plot that is believed to exist and to have culminated in the slaying of Rev. Edmund A. H. Kayser last week when it was learned today that a threat of death had been sent to Rev. George J. Bendick, pastor of the Holy Trinity church in Tolleston, where Mr. Kayser held his pastorate. The letter containing the threat was turned over to Bishop Alerding of Fort Wayne, Ind. Scores of secret service agents and detectives are working on the plot in Gary and other places. The only tangible evidence of the plot is found in the twenty-five explosions in the last thirty days in factories manufacturing, munitions for .warring European nations. , Capture of . the perpetrators of the acts of violence is the only hope of learning to what deapths or heights the alleged conspiracy extends. Father Bendick is strongly pro-Austrian in his beliefs and utterances. WIN VOSGES BATTLE PARIS, Sept.' 1. ' . LITTLE FRENCH GIRL RECEIVES GIFT FROM GERMAN EMPEROR BERLIN, Sept. 1 The Rev. Otto F. Schulte, chaplain of a Rheinish regimnet, writes: "Shortly before he .went to the east ern front the emperor visited the headquarters of Gen von Einem, the commander of the third army, ' in a small French town. While he talked with the general a little French girl approached with a headless doll in her arms. ' "Are you the emperor?" the little one asked, holding out her hand. "Yes, I am," the emperor answered pleasantly, taking the child's hand and stooping down so as to hear better what she had to say. The pretty little girl, whose father is the town : physician, excitedly brought charges against General von Einem. "He knocked oft the head of my dolly," she said. "Now you are found out, my dear von Einem. You are a terrible barbarian," the Kaiser said. It Anally turned out that the general was a victim of mistaken identity.- ' The real culprit was a private soldier who had accidently stepped on the doll and broken her head, but the little girl was completely successful with her complaint. The emperor handed her a shining five-franc gold piece and she proudly ran back to her mother, who from a distance had anxiously watched her conversation with the dreaded German Kaiser. One of the benefit which the protraction of the , war baa conferred on the home community is the marked diminuation of crime throughout the United Kingdom. The expert who has dealt mainly in forging American , express note endorsements, letters of credit and crimes conQjcted with the underworld has practically been obliged to go out of business., ; - V -- Y"-."H.-;:;:; The cessation of traffic to and from the continent has " done much to shut down the letter, of credit .business, while the new powers given to the home office with regard to alien expulsion have enabled the . police to clear out any would-be offenders. All that the police have to do is to hand the home office the past record of any undesirable and he or she is forthwith departed. ,In the earlier stages of the war these undesirables only had to claim American citizenship and they usually escaped for a time. The trouble thus caused to the American embassy in London has been incalculable. r ODDITIES A college professor at Ames, la., has perfected a machine which will scarify the hard seeds, of sweet clover, alfalfa and the like so that the "balky" seeds will sprout.
