WILSON COMMENDED

I President Makes Every Dip- . lomatic Move Possible to

Prevent Conflict From En ; gulfing America.

"Germany will drive the Russians

j out of Poland and will establish her

self at Odessa, the most Important ! port on the Black Sea. Then she will j make peace 'overatures to the Czar, ! offering his country the Dardanelles ! as an outlet to the South sea, probably. Involving Constantinople, in return for Russia's help to Germany In annihilating England. Turkey will be

given Egypt to satisfy her for tne loss

of Constantinople." This prediction, which Included a possible break in the political and physical life of Great Britain, was made yesterday afternoon by Congressman 8. D. Fees, of Ohio, in discussing the European war before a Chautauqua audience of five hundred persons. Every country involved in the conflict, with the exception of Belgium, was blamed for the war by the speaker who discussed the causes Which led to it. He referred to the war as "Russia's fretfulnesB," In being denied . port either in the north, east or south of Europe. Kaiser Acts Hastily. It was Kaiser William's impetuosity which precipitated the war, he said, when Germany's emperor refused to heed the advice of Sir Edward Grey, foreign secretary of England, to seek a conference with its object, arbitration of the difficulties. The speaker ' said' that the Kaiser should not have been so hasty in seeking the cause Of the Czar's mobilization notwithstanding. Russia's wrongful act in mobilizing on Germany's border. "The Balkans are the key to the situation." said Congressman Fess, "and I predict the entrance of each of the states into the war. The quarrel between Austria and Servia was not the cause of the war, neither was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. This war Is a racial, political, Industrial and religious war. "Russia at the close of the JapaneseRussian war wa swlthout a port for

her commerce and it haB been the

dreams of her greatest statesmen and

her whole ambition to have an outlet for her commerce. She will never

agree to any of the Balkan states becoming a province of one of her enemies because that will thwart her

whole design in this war. Austria Without Right.

"Austria had no right to make her requirement of Servia -which would have Involved Servia's yielding her Independence. Russia cannot be blamed for wanting to prevent Servia becoming a province of Austria when Servia's people are Slavs and friends of Russia and the Austrlans are tra

ditional enemies. "But In mobilizing her army to pre

vent this move, why did Russia mobi

lize on Germany's border? Unfor tunately. the Kaiser dispatched an ul

timatum to the Czar ordering the

mobilization stopped. The Czar re fused.

"France was a member of the Triple

Entente. She also sought Alsace-Lorraine, which was taken from her more

than a decade ago by Germany.

"What right had England to enter the war? She claims her desire to

maintain and uphold the neutrality of

Belgium. Why didn't England main

tain the neutrality of China when Japan tread upon that country?

Where will England be If difficulties should arise between the United

States and Japan?"

Congressman Fess discussed the failure of the Allies in their attempt to starve Germany into submission. He doubted the efforts of the Allies even ultimately to quell the Germans, but

thought the financial strain on all of the countries involved in the war would have something to do with its outcome. He paid a tribute to President Wilson, saying that the chief executive had made every diplomatic move known to international law and If it was possible would prevent the United States becoming involved in the war.

MRS. DICKINSON DIES

Mrs. Jane A. Dickinson, widow of the late R. B. Dickinson, died about 6:00 o'clock this morning at her home, 623 Main street. She was 62 years of age and death ensued after a lingering illness of several months. Surviving her is one son, O. E. Dickinson, the Jeweler, one sister, Mrs. C. C. Keever of Fountain City, and two brothers, E. P. Clawson of Clinton, Okla., and It. H. Clawson, of Shreveport. La. Mrs. Dickinson was a member of the East Main street Friends' church and was variously connected with the different activities of the church. Funeral announcement later. Friends may call Tuesday evening or thereafter.

THE HEADLINE ARTIST. The Dayton News had a headline the other day reading, "R. R. Bridge Soon to Start." The writer neglected to say where it was going, but that makes no difference. The point is the ability of the bridge to start somewhere.

It is said that the iron crosses awarded the German troops number almost a half million, yet

the English Victoria Cross is probably the rarest decoration awarded by any nation. At the same time, however, praise in return for the risk of his life, is the only reward his commander can be

stow upon a brave soldier. It is becoming customary for English dignitaries to acknowledge with personal letters, written by hand, the heroism that comes to their attention.

Which reminds us that some day in the near future we may say that the 'Main street bridge starts trouble." Anyhow, it ; started lots of conversation and made one politician swear.

LADIES ONLY.

Dolly's Daily Ghats For Housewives

The canning season has brought the

usual demand on. the part of house

wives for salicylic acid and boric

acid. These preparations are sometimes sold in the form of powder under various trade names and are rec

ommended by the promoters for use In

preserving canned goods in home canning. In the directions for use,

the housewife is told to fill the jar with the fruit or vegetables, cover it

with water, and add a teaspoonful of

the preserving powder. While it is true that these compounds may retard the decay of the fruit or vegetable, it is pointed out by experts that their use may be attended by serious disturbances of health.

Salicylic acid is well known as a poisonous substance, and one of the evils which may accompany its use is derangement of the digestion. It is therefore, plain that its extensive use in food may lead to disturbance of digestion and health. Fruits and vegetables can be kept indefinitely if they are sterilized by heat and properly sealed and there is no excuse, in the opinion of experts, for running any risk by using preserving powders, which may be injurious to the health. The use of such powders, in addition to the possible

injury to health, encourages uncleanly or careless work in canning. Reliance is placed in the efficiency of the preserving compound instead of upon cleanliness and heat.

Swiss Salad. Boil a quart of Swiss chard or silver beet greens until tender in salt water.

Drain and set to cool. Chop and add two tablespoonfuls of finely minced onion and six cold boiled eggs chop

ped. Mix with boiled salad dressing that has been chilled, and garnish with a half-cake of cream cheese put through the ricer. Baked, Spiced Ham. Select a ham of about ten pounds, sugarcured. Scrub and wash it thoroughly, bring to the boil and pour off the first water. Cover with boiling water and allow to simmer gently for two and one-half hours or until it feels tender. Cool in the water , in which it was boiled, remove the skin from the fat side. Rub a handful of brown sugar and bread crumbs into the fat, stick with cloves and brown in the oven.

"How Marjorie Brown Won a Career," was physically demonstrated at the Murrette theatre Tuesday afternoon, and mere man is excluded. Now I wonder why. They didn't object to our presence at the burlesque show last week. What's the difference?

ARE WOMEN NATURALLY DESPONDENT? A prominent writer so claims. Women are constituted with a delicate organism and in nine cases out of ten mental depression may be attributed to an abnormal condition of the system which expresses itself in nervousness, sleeplessness, backache, headaches, causing constant misery and as a result despondency. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, a simple

remedy made from roots and herbs, is the one great remedy for this condition. It goes to the root of the trouble and overcomes despondency.

YOUR KIDNEYS HURT Eat Less Meat If You Feel Backachy or Have Bladder Trouble r

Meat forms uric acid which excites and . overworks the kidneys in their efforts to filter it from the system. Regular eaters of meat must flush the kidneys occasionally. You must relieve them like you relieve the bowels; removing all the acids, waste and poison, elseyou feel a dull misery in the kidney region, sharp pains in the back or sick headache, dizziness, your stomach sours, tongue is coated and when the weather is bad you have rheumatic twinges. The urine is cloudy, full of sediment; the channels often get irritated, obliging you to get up two or three times during the night. To neutralize these Irritating acids and flush off the body's urinous waste get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any pharmacy; take a tablespoonful in a . glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine and bladder disorders disappear.
