Her Husband's Widow
8YN0PSI8. Leslie Morne, a governess, goes to walk by the sea and is spoken to by a man she does not know. She is rescued from his attentions by Victor Steele, a sergeant in the British army, whom she later marries. She finds married lire wearisome and refuses to follow Steele to Egypt. Then she hears of his death and conceals the fact that ehe is his widow. Four years later, married to Oswald Varney and mother of a boy, she meets Steele face to face in Jerusalem. CHAPTER IX. Except that, his li-s parted and were then shut tight as if to restrain an exclamation, he gave no sign of recognition. He looked down at the surface of the rock as if listening to Varney's whispered though animated talk. For ' an appreciable space of time Leslie remained leaning against the balustrade. As In the supreme agony of fear all the blood seemed to have gone to her heart, her muscles refused to obey her will, her knees shook. She expected to fall to the ground. With a desperate effort she turned away and, stumbling over the rich carpets, staggered out onto the porch. She stood clinging to a pillar. Victor alive! How had he come to life again? They had been positive of his death. She recalled the assurances given her at the war office over four years ago as distinctly as though it had been yesterday. His comrades had seen him speared. She had never heard of him or from him since. But she knew there was no possibility of a mistake or an illusion. It was Victor Steele, alive, who stood within the sacred dome behind her conversing with her husband. Her husband but which of them was her husband? Oswald, of course. The marriage with the other man was Invalid. Rose Darley had told her so. There could be no doubt about that. She thought of her son and drew a deep breath. She was Oswald's wife, but what had she been to Sergeant Steele? The blood rushed to her face. She had borne his name, she had lived with him three months. Oh, it was wicked, hideous that fate should have played her this trick! She cringed with shame. She put her hand to her brow and tried to understand what had happened. . . . And what were the two men talking about how had they come" to know each other? Victor had recognized her and denounced her to Oswald. How did men behave toward women In such circumstances? She walked unsteadily down the steps, and then, not feeling quite sure f herself, rested against the basin at which the faithful perform their ablutions before going to the, shrine. She turned toward the porch through which she had come, and saw, Oswald come out accompanied by Victor Steele. They descended the steps toward her. She braced herself for the ordeal. Turning half round she affected to be enjoying the prospect of the Mount of Olives. The two men halted beside her. She did not raise her eyes. "You look rather pasty, Leslie," bo. gan her husband cheerfully. "Rather stuffy Inside there, eh? I want to introduce an old friend of mine Captain Steele, Egyptian army. Queer we should knock up against each other after all these years in this place of all others. This is my wife, Steele." Leslie turned slightly toward them. For the briefest instant she raised her eyes toward Victor's in desperate entreaty. She lowered her lids again and murmured, "How do you do, Captain Steele? It mu.st have been a great surprise for you to meet each other." "An unlikely spot, certainly, Mrs. Varney." She Hears the Voice of Her "Dead" Husband. The last time she had heard his voice was at the London station, when he bade her farewell that dismal December afternoon. It was slightly deeper in tone now. She thrilled to hear it, and the thrill was not unpleasant. She fancied that he had laid a stress on the words "Mrs. Varney." Yet it was impossible to suppose that he did not recognize her. "I knew Steele years ago," explained Oswald, "when I was in the army. We tsaw service together near Aden. You remember that awful hole, Steele? Well, I always stick to it that you saved my life. Funny I never spoke about him to you. Leslie. Well you see, it's not because I had forgotten. ' And so you're in the Khedive's . service now, and got your Cross, lucky beggar! Here, 1 must introduce you to our C-Iends." His face was deeply bronzed in fact, . many of the Arabs standing by were fairer than he. The close-cropped hair about his temples was here and there flecked with grey, and there were lines on his face which told of pain and privations; but his masculine ' En glish beauty - seemed - somehow to

The fez, pushed slightly on one side as he raised his hand in a salute to the Durgans, showed a long thin scar across his forehead, which matched, and perhaps explained, the red ribbon of the Victoria Cross above the pocket of his tunic. His uniform was destitute of any ornament except this and the plain gilt letters and stars on his shoulders denoting his rank and regiment. "Can you talk Arabic, Captain Steele?" began Miss Freddie, in her high, nasal voice, lifting her impertii:cr.t'f.'cc ta tia. "Yes? How perfectly lovely! Now we shan't we tied to your apron-strings, Mr. Issa, sir," she said, turning to the dragoman. "Look here, Steele," said Oswald in his heartfelt manner, "you and I must have a long yarn together. Lord, it will do me good to hear about the Red Sea and the good old Fuzzie-Wuzzles. I've got slack slack. Leslie says I'm getting fat. Now look here, old fellow, you have got to come home to lunch with us, even if you have a prior engagement with the Pasha." "That's exactly what I have got," replied Victor, adding very Tirmly: "For which reason, unfortunately, I can't accept your invitation." Oswald protested warmly. "Make the Turk wit. They air-ays keep us waiting. If you won't lunch you must dine with us. Where are ; ou staying?" "At Hewins' hotel outside the Jaffa gate. I should like to dine with you immensely, but I daren't fix a time, for I am liable to be called away at a moment's notice." Leslie, ''ho had kept her eyes steadily averted, felt that he looked toward he' as he said this. "Why not drop in at my place on the off-chance," he suggested to Varney, "and we could j..rn away to our hearts' content without boring the ladies, as I'm sure we should do. I haven't been in Europe for four years. I've nothing to talk about except Gypsies and dervishes. "I'm sure that wouldn't interest Mrs. Varney or Miss Durgan." He extended his hand toward his friend as if to cut short the interview. "I must go now at once. The Pasha must not be kept waiting. Don't forget to drop in." "I'll come round," agreed Varney, "but you must dine with us all the same. I want to hear how you have got on. Well, good-bye, if you must go." (To Be Continued.) WATSON APPROVES OF FRANK LYNCHING THOMAS WA TSON. Thomas E. Watson, at one time Populist candidate for president of the United States and now a newspaper editor, has come out publicly in defense of the lynchers of Leo. Frank. Attorney Marshall of New.. York said that the lynching was incited by Watson, who has' been writing many editorials c6ndemning Frank . and attacking Ex-Gov. Slaton who commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. ' .- : - - -
