BY GEORGE DUFRE8NE. j PARIS, Aug. 13. In the early days of this war. Ugly scrambled asbore In northern France a stowaway on one of the channel packets. He was a khakl-tlnted cur of the most dlsreput-; able appearance. Nobody's dog; but with a bouI so tuned to the doings of soldiers that as soon as he discovered that the great game was going on, he swore to be in it. He was a natural fighter, scored and scarred with a hundred battles as an old campaigner, hardened to all the vicissitudes, a sleeper out o nights under the cold stars; a cunning boarder on emergency rations', a strategist second to none in his particular line. So they attached him here to B. X-, which means any sort of Job that Is going at the base "B" standing for base, and "X" being the recognized algebraic symbol signifying an unknown quantity. He was signed on the A. S. C. (Pickford's Light Horse) to deal with the rats which ravage the bales down by the docks. Like the minister om munitions, he was given a free hand with his subject, and so successful was he with these grey-Jacketed rascals that he soon received a corporal's stripe, double rations (he dearly loves Jam) and the offer, after another singularly successful raid among the rodents, of a commission. This last he refused, declaring that he would never leave the ranks. Downs French Dogs. In several fights with French dogs, who disputed his territory, he Bcored so heavily that they were only scraps and fag ends of the enemy left. If only he could meet a dachshund! Ugly's prowess was noised about, it reached the fighting line. G. H. Qheard of it. so that presently a dusty M. T. driver, pulling up his car amid the shellstrewn debris of the dock, handed a package to the young officer in charge, demanding a speedy anf wer. The communication read as fol-'""DuK-out, 6Rh, Battersea Rise, Tuesriay. We always congratulated ourFPl'vea here in having the ugliest dog and the fiercest fighter in Flanders. We hereby challenge Corporal Ugly, A C. S., to meet Sergeant Smiler, G. II. Q.f to fight at 25 pounds, catch-as-catch-can, at any handy spot within or without the meaning of the act. Stakes, five pounds a side, money down." Inquiries were immediately made as to the standing, skill and fighting v eight of Sergeant Smiler, and these beinK satisfactory, the challenge was accepted, and Ugly was put into strict training, much to his disgust. His jam was cut down, and he was put on an exclusive diet of bully and biscuit to harden his teeth and augment his
angry passions. That they were augmented was proved by one or two rehearsals he was allowed to have with a poodle and a semi-wolf hound, both of which are now in the clearing hospital Goes to Battle Scene. A heavy book was made on the forthcoming combat, and when the tense evening of the meeting of those two growling Greeks arrived the arena was packed with an eager, brownfaced crowd, all a-throw with the sweet pleasures of anticipation. Sergeant Smiler arrived, due to time in a carefully corded H. & P. biscuit box. marked "ginger nuts." and perforated generously for the in and exhalation of the interned warrior, whose growls could be heard through the wood like the complainings and mutterings of a caged thunderstorm. Ugly was already in possession of the floor, striding up and down in the fierce pride of ownership, and snarling a challenge to the whole category nf fmfta Snrh moments of suspense were experienced as only when brave men meet to watch the fate of empires decided. Ugly looked and no doubt felt like the king's champion on coronation day. He was so fierce and so fit that two-to-one was laid on the match before the other champion had even been seen. Scrappers Meet. The box labeled "ginger nuts" was dragged into the ring, the cords unl.iccfid. the lid raised, the cage tipped ft the necessary angle by a brave Tommy, who leaped over the parapet rs with a roar the incarcerated thunderstorm hurled himself into the lists. Alert, savage, and with his back hair bristling, Ugly crouched for the spring crouched and then sat down hard in absolute amazement; for there in front of him was his exact, his complete double in size and shape and color. Sergeant Smiler also crouched and sat down suddenly, as if frozen to Chief Cause of Pimples. Blotches, Sallow Skin (Messenger of Health.) Unsightly eruptions, pimples, bolls, t'lotches, sallow or muddy skin, usually ore due to a sluggish Uver. a constipated towel and c. polluted blood stream as a, consequence. How foolish in such cases to resort to outward applications, which ran never have natural, permanent results. If more people only knew it, ther Is a very simple remedy, to be found in any drug store, which is as effective as it Is hru-iiilra and quick acting. It is an old formula, long recognised by the medical profession, which l:as boen put a tablet form, and at nuoh smaU coat no one neod now Jj deprived of lt wonderful tenants. "Sentanel tablets" that's the nameare entirely vegetable and there's n habit-forming lngrodlont. You need only get about a dime's worth, and swallow one at bedtime to realist Ocre'a nothing else quite so good for the purpose. Thai nction in the morning is so easy, so soothing, and instead of a weakening aftereffect, you feel truly refreshed and invigorated. the floor. In the silence which followed, the breathing of the two dogs could be heard Jerkily, like the spurts of a southwest squall at sea. Then, with a gurgle of canine melody, the two animals flung themselves into one another's arms In a brotherly caress, in which yaps of Joy were mingled with yelps of reminiscence, almost tear compelling to the sentimental soldiers gathered around. For none could fail to read the riddle. Corporal Ugly and Sergeant Smiler were twins, and this was their first meeting since puppyhood. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. This is a true tale, and the British army is still laughing over it. A good chuckle now and then is a tonic.
