Forgetting La Reine, the actress who had held his Interest for the time, Lewis plans to make Amy his wife. ' To his deep chagrin, the banker finds that his attentions fill Amy with aversion. Then comes the discovery that Blanchard has robbed the institution of a large sum. By threatening to send her father to " prison. Lewis compels Amy to consent to be his wife. Amy, however, informs Lewis that she will bear his name only until such time as she has repaid the money her father had stolen. Lewis consents, believing bis love for her will have vanished by that time. His wife's attitude has the effect of increasing Lewis' love for her. Unable to break down the barrier which stands between them, Lewis taunts her with the conditions of their bargain that she is his until she can purchase her freedom. Amy remains fcllent and makes over to him the money which she, from time to time, receives as the result of her literary labors. The outcome of this remarkable story is decidedly novel. WEDNESDAY. "Dream Dance." The young Vicomte Leon de Cazenave, following the advice of his painting master, goes , to the Pyrenees, and there meets Mignon, a girl of the mountains. Love comes, to both, and soon they are mar- . ried in secret. But with the approach of the great art exhibition in Paris, Leon prepares to leave, swearing, however, that he will return and claim his obscure bride. Leon's painting wins the prize, and with the success which comes he forgets Mignon. Soon Peplta, a celebrated dancer, has him in her toils, and as a proof of his love he paints a magnificent portrait of her in dancing dress. Away in the mountains Mignon's son Is born, and her father, returning from military duty, upbraids her and taxes her with its unknown father. He turns her out and warns her never to return without her husband. To Paris Mignon makes her way to find Leon, only to be told by him to return to the mountainsthat he will follow. Mignon in her Innocence believes him. Pepita is ruining Leon, and the old duke, -his father, sternly orders him to part with her. Leon refuses, and in the course of a short time is reduced to penuary, his belongings seized and he himself is ejected .from the sumptuous rooms. But be has hidden the picture of Pepita; that he will not part with. It is dearer to him than life Itself. Time and time again he attempts to destroy the painting, but he can not bring himself to do:it. 'Leon has an encounter with Pepita's newest admirer and suffers humiliation. . .WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. "The Bank." There is more riotous fun packed into this two-reel comedy than any other photoplay of like length. The world's greatest comedian, Charles Chaplin, has outdone himself in this new production. While all his other comedies are funny, this one is a scream. It abounds In real humor and comic situations, with Chaplin at his best in his Inimitable antics. Chaplin has instilled new and original Ideas into this production that make it distinctively different from all others, while carrying Chaplin's naive humor. Chaplin plays his role with more sponteneity than usual. It is the same Mr. Chaplin that has been making the world roar with
laughter for the last several months, only with even more ginger and lively fun.
Murray MONDAY AND TUESDAY. "The Commanding Officer" With the interest of the theme centering about the beautiful young wife of the commanding officer, who Is unjustly accused of an immoral deed of which she is thoroughly guiltless, the development of the plot is marked by a uniformity of merit and a consistency of suspense that result, in a complete conquest of the sympathies of the audience. The difficult role of the misjudged young wife is entrusted to Alice Dovey. Needless to Bay, before the termination of this lour-part feature the intricate situations and circumstantial episodes that for a time endanger the honor of the accused woman are logically explained, and the
pall that threatens the repute and happiness of the commanding officer's wife rises into the clouds that drift into nowhere. WEDNESDAY. "Pretty Mrs. Smith" A magnificent production by the Oliver Morosco Photoplay; company, will., be- shown for two days. This charming comedydrama written by Elmer Harris and Oliver Morosco, has had a long and successful run on Broadway, and 11
the talent now shown in the picture are Morosco stars. Fritzi Scheff takes the title role, assisted by Louis Ben-
nison, Forrest Stanley, Owen Moore
and Leila Bliss. FRIDAY AND 8ATURDAY. "The Thief" Henri Bernstein has written many good plays. Amongst them all "The Thief'' stands preeminent. It is his supreme success. The plot may be told in a few words. The heroine, a young woman of weak character but with an infinite capacity for love, has centered her affections upon a man of social position. Without beauty or wealth she has no means of attracting his attention and so, in order to make herself desirable in his eyes, she steals large sums of, money from her friends with which she buys beautiful clothes Her peculations are discovered and attributed to a young man who, knowing the truth, remains silent to shield her. The very love, however, which at first led her astray has ennobled and strengthened her character, and in the wonderfully dramatic climax she confesses her guilt.

Palace WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. "The Bank" Charlie Chaplin stars in this film. What is claimed to be the funniest Chaplin comedy yet produced will be shown at the Palace next Wednesday and Thursday when Chaplin will be seen in the screaming farce, "The Bank," a two-part Essany comedy that has never been run in this city. And it is a sure cure for glooms, as the entire two reels are a riot of clean, wholesome fun Just made to make you laugh ; and they surely do their duty.
JANE COWL STARS IN "THE GARDEN OF LIES"
Five-reel Broadway Universal Feature Dramatized by Louis Reeves Harrison from the Novel by Justus Miles Forman. Thrilling Duel Over Princess Who Is Abducted by a Prime Minister. Comes to The Lyric Wednesday. Great interest attaches to the irst Universal Broadway release, "The Garden of Lies," featuring Jane Cowl. The five-reel feature was dramatized by Louis Reeves Harrison from the novel by Justus Miles Frohman, who went down with the Lusitania when that ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. Miss Cowl, the star of the photoplay, created the role of Mary Turner in "Within the Law," and is considered the most beautiful woman on the American stage today. In addition she can act. "The Garden of Lies" was filmed in St. Augustine, and during Miss Cowl's stay in the oldest city in the United States, she went alligator hunting in the swamp lands near St. Augustine. The municipal authorities of the Florida city do not permit photoplayers to act on Sabbath, although they place no restrictions on the showing of films on that day, so, in order to pass the deadly dull Sunday, Miss Cowl went to church first and then set out alligator hunting. There were just thirteen members in the photoplay troupe which went South to film "The Garden of Lies," but despite this, there was no ill luck in the liming of the sensational automobile wreck or in the other exciting scenes. Miss Cowl is supported by an exceptional company, consisting of William Russell, David Wall, Philip Hahn, Claude Cooper, Ethelbert Hale, Violet Horner and Adele Carson.
"The Garden of Lies" was first play
ed in London by the noted English actor-manager. Sir George Alexander, who gave Director John H. Pratt, the American photoplay producer, some valuable hints in staging the many
thrilling scenes. The photoplay's ac
tion takes place in a mythical kingdom which has a semi-tropical aspect
and many old. castles. All of these Mr
Pratt found in St. Augustine or erect
ed for the picture play.

TONIGHT. Herbert Rawlinson duplicates his wonderful success in "The Black Box," in . the Gold Seal two-reel detective drama, "The Great Ruby Mystery." The story of the play centers -around a clever gang of international crooks who attempt to steal a jewel of great value. The story of the play follows: Novensen, an ardent patriot and high-born Dane, plans to sell a celebrated heirloom, the famous Egard ruby, and thus secure funds to equip a regiment in the. Danish army. In his office is one Heinrich Von Buelow, a Swedish secret service agent, posing as a servant in the household of Novensen. SUNDAY. "My Tomboy Girl" Every girls' boarding school is familiar with the tomboy type. She can throw a ball as straight as any kid her size and age, and takes just as naturally, to a horse a. cross-bar bicycle, and to driving a six-cylinder as a duck to his natural habitat. Such a girl was "Rose, the Madcap." Rose's parents had tried their best to make a "quiet, refined lady" out of her, but without success. Rose would rather play "Wild Indian" with the boys when she was in short dresses. She cried her little head off when the boys rudely told her one November evening that se was too light for the neighborhood football team. Monday. "Out of the Flames" A Big U tworeel modern drama written by F. McGrew Willis, and produced by Burton King, brings home this lesson with a vigor and a moral which none can miss. Fire protection is the greatest cry
ing need in the United . States today. The story told by "Out of the Flames,tr illustrates this point In a thrilling way. :V. , TUESDAY.. "Leah the Forsaken" This film was the first three-reel Imp that President Carl Laemmle of the Universal ever made. At the time "of its release it was his cbef-d'ouvre, his masterpiece. And President Laemmle is just as proud today of the play as he was, the day. he first saw it in the Imp studio. He is now reissuing the drama, because the photography is as perfect today as it was when first made, because it was a "standing room only" attraction during its exhibition all over the country and because it still is unsurpassed for grandeur of treatment and nobility of theme. THURSDAY. "Gene Of The Northland" is a drama of the Canadian Northwest which fairly breathes the spirit of tho piney woods, the white-capped mountain tops and the enormous level expanses of plain between the lake country and the Western ranges. It tells a gripping, red-blooded story in which the mounted police, native half-breeds, stern Anglo-Saxons and French habi tants all have a part. The original scenario was written by Gene Gauntier and the photoplay was produced by Jack J.. Clark. Murrette SUNDAY. "The Phantom Extra" John Zeldon, nonriir eiortori state senator, oromisee
