i President Wilson's Human Armor. 'NEW YORK, July 28. The White Star liner Arabic sailed for Liverpool, today with a number f sand bags surrounding the after steering gear as a protection against possible shell' fire from German submarines. ' The . Arabic v carried 16,000 tons of cargo, nearly all of which was f war supplies. ; Aeroplanes and automobiles formed the chief portion of the cargo. Of the 188 passengers twelve were Americans. r?or. the first time in the history of the line no passenger list was published before the sailing of the vessel. All of the cargo as well as baggage of the passengers was carfelluly examined for bombs. News Item. .

Where Armies Clash

The Arabic is an English passenger vessel carrying nearly 16,000 tons of war munitions for the British armies which are fighting the Germans. The automobiles in this cargo will be used to transport food, ammunition and soldiers back and forth and along the British fighting line in

Flanders. The aeroplanes will be used for scout

ing and for artillery range finding to make sure

that British shells shall find their mark and tear, maim and kill thousands of Germans. , If Germany could intercept and sink this vessel before it arrives at its destination, all its cargo's power for harm to the German cause and misery and death to the German fighters would vanish. Germany has the means for accomplish

ing this. Her submarines which are rendering

England's cairn to control of the seas merely fu tile boasting, could sink the Arabic.

Suppose that the United States were at war with England and that gigantic British armies were attempting to Invade us from Canada.. Sup-

That is the way we would feel if the situation were reversed from what it is. Germany feels that way against us and against President Wilson for his declaration that Americans shall travel with immunity from German torpedoes even on British ammunition ships. .'

Meantime the 'Arabic is steadily drawing

nearer the German submarine zone.

It has sandbag armor for protection in case a submarine comes up only within gun fire range.

It has twelve Americans for protection in case a submarine comes up within torpedo range.

. BY GAS O. LINE. Tlichmond being an automobile center, having four large flourishing and prosperous plants for the manufacture of "gas wagons," besides having as many private owners of cars as any city of its size in the state, the question has arisen as to why there Is not more traffic over the country roads adjacent to the city; why more people do not take advantage of the present spell of. warm days and keep cool by "whizzing" through the rural districts, raising the wind and keeping away from the heat waves. No matter how high the humidity may be a car going at twenty or thirty miles an hour is sure to create a breeze. Indiana has the finest and best automobile and wagon roads of any state in the middle west. This is not. a random statement, but a statement of fact which is known to be true and Is acknowledged by everyone who has traveled this section of the country. More than that Indiana Is fortunate this year in having better crops, than any of the other states in this vicinity and as a consequence the scenery is far more appealing to the eye fer It spells prosperity. However, this is a story of roads and not ot crops so its roads in the next paragraph. - Scenic Route Picked. The few short trips that are suggested here can easily be made In a day's run and the first that is suggested is placed in the van for the reason :tnat the scenery viewed on the way cannot be surpassed.

Lives of Old Folks

Sicknes and Misery Are Caused by Constipation in Hot Weather. People of advancing years should be very careful of their health during the hot months. One has only to follow the mortality record of elderly people as reported In the papers, to realize that these are the hardest months of the year for them. It is most important to the maintenance of health and vigor at this time to avoid constipation, with 'its accompanying headaches and muscular and blood congestion. This can be best accomplished by the timely use of a gentle laxative, such as Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, an ideal remedy that Is pleasant to the taste, easy and natural in its action and does not gripe. Its tonic properties build up and strengthen the system. Elderly people should avoid strong physics, cathartics, purgatives, salts and pills a sthese afford only tempor

THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, FRIDAY, JULY 30, 1915.

pose the Arabic was just leaving Liverpool tori

Canada with 16,000 tons of munitions of war for the British army attempting to invade the United States. Suppose that there were 188 passengers aboard the Arabic, 12 of whom were (Jennans. Our submarines, under such circumstances, could intercept and destroy the Arabic if it weren't for those Germans board. We will say this would be the case because several months before we had destroyed a British passenger ship which was also carrying munitions of war to its array and a hundred German passengers had perished.

In spite of our pointing out to Germany at

the time that we had warned her citizens against traveling on British passenger steamers, which were also carrying munitions of war to our enemy, Germany, we will say, took the position that under international law her citizens had the right to travel on any passenger steamer they pleased regardless of whether or no that steamer carried munitions of war, and that we had no right to de

stroy such a steamer if by so doing we endangered the life of a single German. If Germany added that a repetition of such an act would be deemed an "unfriendly action," we would feel that Germany would mean that she would take up arms against us in the event of such a recurrence. As a nation we should hate Germany terribly for such a stand. Germany, we would say, despite her proclamation of neutrality, is undoubtedly friendly to England. She knows we are in a war for our national existence and that if we can prevent supplies reaching the British army by torpedoing the supply ships, we shall most likely win the war and prevent England conquering us. If Germany were really neutral and unbiased in

this conflict, therefore, we would say, she would keep her citizens off British boats or let them travel there at their own peril.

The German offensive threatening the French lines covering

the highest country to be found within a hundred miles of Richmond. It is a

country where you will find the hills

and dales in duplicate of "Old New

England. If you are observant when you cross Bockmeyer and Beeler hills

you will notice the rolling .land and

the meadows on every hand; you will see here and there a willowly brook winding through the farm lands. Now by keeping straight ahead Brookville is reached and after this ramble along

the Liberty pike northwest, Conners-

ville will be the next city on the way. After a short run over good roads to

Cambridge City and a turn to the east

just a little way out of town, Richmond

will be sighted. This will bring you home over the Dixie Highway and Its

easy riding.

This is a trip that should not be

missed. If you are fortunate enough to own a car go over this route. If not walk it. If you have to walk you will benefit more than the man who rides. Here is really gorgeous scenery. The highest hills and the greenest of all

things are viewed.

Go To Visit Reservoir. It you make the trip suggested

above and like it here's another. The

Richmond Reservoir over in Ohio is rather a long ride for one day but it is one well worth taking. The roads are fine all the way but if you figure on. a two days journey you'll enjoy it much better and have a better time.

Anyhow here's the route: Go north

west to Winchester over the Fountain City and Winchester pike, through

Winchester north to Portland " and west into Celina.

Trips to Indianapolis and Cincinnati

are popular and the roads all the way are good.

Going to Cincinnati the route is over

the Boston Pike, through Boston, Five

Points, College Corner, Oxford, Hamil

ton and then into the big city. Returning the trip can be made by the, way of Dayton.

And Your Tires Have They These Goodyear Extras?

We argue for the utmost in a tire. Many do not give it, and they can't Tire prices have dropped rapidly, profits are small, competition is fierce. Only mammoth outputs can cope with present conditions. So there are many incentives to skimp.' Costly Extras v It will coat us $1,000,000 this year to make our All-Weather treads double-thick. Most entiskids are regular treads made rough. Goodyear Fortified Tires contain five exclusive features, and others which are rare. These extras will cost us on this year's output $1,635,000. Our latest improvements, just added this

year, will cost us $500,000. So you are less apt than ever to find other tires which compare with . Goodyears.

Price Savings Despite these extras, Goodyear prices have come down and down. . This year's reduction will save our users about $5,000,000. And that was the third reduction in two years, totaling 45 per cent. Most of these extras are hidden. Tires which lack them look like tires which have them. But there's en ornxxis difference in the average service. These things gave Goodyears top place, and have held them there for years. This year they are adding thousands to our users. We invite you to join them, Let Goodyear tires show
