A Man and His Wife
Isabel Finds That John Saw Mrs. Simmons After the Dinner , '.V;-;V' - . Party. '
BY VIRGINIA TERHUNE VAN DE ; - WATER. Isabel Hamilton did not cry when ner husband left her for the day without his usual good-bye kiss. Instead, he went about her various duties with a set face and a hard heart. Her sensation of cold resentment almost like indiff ernce would have puzzled her had she paused to analyze it. But she only told herself that she did not care. That Is what wives say when they believe that caring does no good and when they determine to take the happiness they have missed anywhere they can find it. That afternoon as she was walking down Fifth avenue she met Ella Sanger. . .
"Oh, how do you do?" asked the spinster. "Come on Into this store with me and get an ice cream soda." When they were seated at the counter, sipping the combination of syrup charged water and synthetic flavoring which is the popular American beverage, Ella asked carelessly . "Did you wonder what had become of your lord and master last night? I told Adelaide that although he had
been my escort from his -home, I would not take the responsibility of
having him kept away That was her
responsibility, not mine."
The fingers with which Isabel held
the long handled spoon tightened con
vulsively, but she took another sip of
the frothy mixture - before saying
pleasantly, "So you wish to be exon
erated of all blame, eh? Well, I Named nobody. Indeed, ft did not occur to me that-John stayed out - any 'later than usual." ' ; ; "Good for you" Ella smiled. "That's U" kind of a wife to be! I have always said that to Adelaide about you." You see, I was to spend last night with her. for I have been staying at her house for several days while .my father and mother are on a trip South. So I went back to her place last night, instead of to my own. Of course Adelaide had. as usual, a lor to say to your husband. I was so tired that I went right to my room but I heard their voices in confabulation for an hour after I had said good-night to them."
"Old friends always have , a' lot to
sav to each other," Isabel remarked
The' speech was bromldian.- but- it
served her purpose. When she had fin
ished her glass of soda and the two women were leaving the shop, she put
into words a theory that she had Just this moment formulated and which, in
her- heart of hearts, she did not- be
lieve. - Do you know." she said, "I think that in marriage each party to the contract should let the other do as he or she pleases." "You are very wise." Ella agreed, adding as they : resumed their, stroll along the avenue "I waa saying that very thing to Adelaide about you the other day. She wondered If you had a jealous nature, and I told her you were too sensible for that. I was sure you
regarded marraige just as I regard it
a kind of partnership in which each may do what he or she likes, c You allow your husband to come and go as
he pleases, while .you do the same.
Isn't that your idea?" .v . 1
"Yes." Isabel replied. "That is ex
actly my idea." -
She knew it had never been her view of matrimony, but she was re
solved that, it. should be hereafter. Why should she not play the part laid out for her? . - , i ' ' "
' "Well." the spinster " continued, "though I am not married, it is the onlooker who sees most of the game. I
have watched my - friends often and
few wedded couples get on as well as they, would If they adopted .your plan.' The way you t- let your husband go about Is " ideal." I told Adelaide that
when she told: me she was to lunch with Mr. Hamilton at Sherry's today. Just think how 'often he goes to her house, and., I suppose to other places too.? , : "Yes, indeed to many other places too." the wife affirmed. "fThey liad reached' Forty-second street. "Are you going to walk or ride up-town?",Ella Sanger asked. "I am going to take a Broadway car here." ."I am going to walk for a while longer," Isabel said., "I need the exercise.".'..:. The truth was that she wanted to
be alone. Block after block she walk
ed, revolving in her mind what she
had just heard. John had let her think
that, he had taken Ella Sanger down
town last night, and that he had then walked home. He had as good as said as much Perhaps he had not known
that Ella was - staying at Mrs. Sim
mons s when he had set out with her.
The wife mused bitterly that he could not have known It or he would, not have been so reluctant to accompany the spinster. What had he and J Adelaide talked about so late last night? .
Had their conversation been about Isabel's' vexation at the spiteful remark of John's "very' good friend?1? Or had they been planning their luncheon together today?- And at Sherry's too! ; She almost stopped short as she thought of that luncheon. John claimed .that he could not afford to give his wife a large allowance, had allowed her to help him in one way and another with the few dollars she could save from her housekeeping allowance, had managed to give .her a paltry ten dollar bill toward, her spring clothes yet he had the money to take Adelaide Simmons to luncheon at Sherry's. At first she had been stunned by
the information that Ella Sanger had
suddenly imparted . to her. She did
not for a moment believe that - Ella
had meant to arouse the wife's suspicions. She had simply taken for granted that John's wife knew and considered proper that which he and Ade
laide regarded as a matter of course. Even In her ' bewilderment Isabel acquitted Ella Sanger of any desire to make trouble.- . r ' But the trouble had been made. She appreciated this as she walked on alone this Spring afternoon, oblivious of all around her. To Be Continued. ; Read of fer on P&se 2 of free cake of Palm Olive Soap.
