"A Man and His Wife"
Duval Makes Some Flattering Remarks to Isabel When John
Is Absent.
BY VIRGINIA TERHUNE VAN DE
WATER. Chapter XLII. CooTTiAt. 1815. Star Company
The dinner which Isabel Hamilton gave to Mr. and Mrs. Ferris was a greater success, she thought, than had
been the one to wnicn jonns special
friends had been Invited.
To be sure, there was little drink-
,' Ing and less loud laughter than at the dinner at which Adelaide Simmons had been the guest of honor. The iherry left over from that function was all-sufficient for this more sedate
iffair. and there were no cocktails.
f he benedictine was served In the liv-ng-room, as before, and the conversa-
ion was pleasant. If not gayJohn acquitted himself well and his vife observed how much better his rracious dignity became him than did the free-and-easy manner he was in the habit of adopting with a less conventional group of people. It was plain that Mr. and Mrs. Ferris were agreeably impressed by their host, and Isabel had a thrill of gratification as she noted this fact. Now that she and John seemed to be drawing farther apart, she remembered frequently Ida's simile with regard to the two swimmers fn the matrimonial sea, and was anxious that her laughing prediction was beginning to be fulfilled. It was half past ten when the guests of honor said It was time for them to go home. Ella Sanger had come In a cab and asked John to please call up the garage from which she had obtained it and order it sent at once to the Hamilton apartment house. As John did rer bidding, and she went to Isabel's room to put on her wraps, David Duval turned to his hostess. "I've had an awfully pleasant time," he said. "Do you know I have not been to such a delightful affair in a long while." "Nat even at Mrs. Slmmons's?" Isabel spoke on the Impulse of the moment and regretted her speech as soon as she had made it "I bee your Dardon!" she exclaimed. "That was
not a polite nor a knid question to ask." Duval smiled good-naturedly. "I Bee nothing out of the way in your question," he said. It is not as if Mrs. Simmons was my very close friend. She Is a polly woman and good company in a way but I have never been an habitue of her home as some other men have. As, for instance Dennis." His hostess noticed the slight pause before Dennis's name, and she was sure that Duval had come near making the blunder of speaking of John as an habitue of Mrs. Simmons's home. This was undoubtedly the way that people regarded John' people who had
seen him witn Aaeiame. bui bob
spoke unconcernedly. Duval Pays Isabel a Subtle Compliment.
"I have only been in Mrs. Simmons's home once." she remarked "so
I know few of her associates." "You and she are of different world," he observed. I do not fancy you two would have much in common." Yet John was her. friend. Here again, was the doctrine that was constantly confronting her that of one standard for man, another for woman. "If she is the friend of nice men I do not see why Bhe might not be a friend of nice women, too" she began, then stopped as John entered. "I have called up Miss Sanger's cab," he announced. "It will be here in a minute. Tell her so will you Isabel?" . She started to do his bidding, pausing as she passed him to say in a low voice "You will offer to escort her home, won't you, John?" "Why?" he asked, following her out into the hall. "She will be safe in a cab." "But she was present at the other dinner when you protested against Mrs. Simmons her cousin going home alone in a taxi at this time of night." "That's so," he mused. "I have it!" with a sudden clearing of his face, "Duval will be glad to take her home." "He has made no move to leave
yet," Isabel said hurriedly. "You can hardly suggest his doing so in your own house No, my dear, it is your place to accompany Miss Sanger." "Confound it!" John muttered as he started towards his dressing-room for his hat and coat. "It's an infernal nuisance!" "You do not always consider that kind of thing a nuisance," she said. He looked at her squarely. "I suppose," he retorted, "that you mean to remind me that I was willing to escort Adelaide home the other night. I do not deny it. 1 would have been glad to. She is my very good friend." There was a note of defiance in his
voice and his wife heard it. But she met it without excitement. "Then, as
Miss Sanger Is your very good friend's cousin," she suggested, "it might be a pleasure to. you to do anything for
her. I will go and see if she is ?aady.
- John, making the best of what he felt was a bad bargain, left the house with Ella s Sanger, but David Duval lingered. When he and his hostess were alone he turned to her with an effort to be frank, yet with some em
barrassment. He Asks if He May Speak to Her Plainly "May I speak plainly, dear Lady?'
he asked. "You suggested Just now that one who, is 'a man's friend may
also be a woman's friend. Perhaps so. But there are women and women. Adelaide Simmons is a good woman
according to her code and in some respects a kind-hearted one. But she
is not of as refined a nature as you,
nor does she look at life as yon look at it She has had experiences that have embittered her. Now she is trying to snatch from life that which It
seems so far to have denied her. She
is not an intimate friend of mine.
have no women friends with whom I am on confidential terms. Will you forgive me If I say that I wish I were worthy the friendship of a woman
whom I could trust and look up tosuch a woman as yourself? "Or, Mr. Duval!" she laughed nervously. ' .
"I mean it!" he. returned, looking down at her intently as she stood before him. "Perhaps some day you will believe that I long for your friendship
that I want to know you better."
She tried to laugh again. Yet long
arter He had said good-night and gone his way, she was conscious of a warm feeling about her heart when she remembered his words. Was the feeling friendship or was it gratined vanity?

Philadelphia, Pa. "lam just 52 years of age and during Change of Life I suf
fered for six years terribly. I tried several doctors but none seemed to give me any relief. Every
month the pains were intense in both sides, and made me so weak that I had to go to bed. At last a friend recommended Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound to me and I tried it at once and found much relief. After that I had no pains at all and could do my housework and shopping the same as always. For years I have praised
