Work of Dislodging . Austrians in Rocky Defiles Necessarily Slow, Says Lieut. General Cadarna. BY BRIXTON D, ALLAIRE. ROME, July 14 (by Mail to New York). Italian losses up to the present In the war against Austria are estimated at 15,000 men. The heaviest losses have fallen upon the Alpine troops and the Bercaglieri. This information has been secured from Italian army officers who have Just returned from the front. These officers declare that the Austrians are putting up strong resistance against the Italian invasion, and that the fighting on the Isonzo front is described as a veritable hell. The Italians have some artillery of a new type, which has not yet been

turned loose against the Austrians, but which is described as being more formidable than the big guns of the Germans. Reports that the Italians are fighting Landsturm troops or reserves above the military age are ridiculed by the officers. They , declare that Austria Is using seasoned first line veterans against the Italians and paid high tribute to their courage and competence. The Italian war office is maintaining the utmost secrecy relative to operations, and a secret service department has been built up by Lieuteant General Luigl Cadorna, the chief of staff, which rivals the German military secret service for efficiency. The losses are not being given out officially. Lieutenant General Cadorna regards them light in comparison with the progress made, but he fears the effect upon the public mind as the Italians are characteristically temperamental. "Our situation on the Isonzo river front, in Gorizia, is well In hand, but we are meeting with the most stubborn resistance," said one of the officers. "In the mountain districts the fighting is a veritable hell. With the bursting of each shell the sound is intensified a thousand times by the mountain hollows, and "the detonation vibrates for several minutes. Imagine the inferno of sound when the artillery duel is violent and continuous. Many soldiers go back from the front with no wounds but bursted eardrums. Our artillery fire can not slacken, for we have taken the offensive and we must capture the Austrian forts. The idea that the enemy was unprepared is nonsense. He has sprung many surprises upon our troops. This - is especially so in the case of artillery and secret positions. Many times when we had silenced a fort on a mountain top and thought that the way lay open

Then we found that before retreating the Austrians had covered all the approaches to the fort with hand bombs, from which the caps had been removed.
