Hot Day Oddities; Read 'em and Smile

NEW USE FOR CAN,- - HUNTINGTON Frank Pumphrey, a farmer of Clear Creek township, rubbed his eye and took a second .look. when he saw a strange object .running about the field in the early j morning. The first look led' him to think that he had seen a groundhog, but the second gave him the impression that he was gazing at an animated tin 5an. He took a shotgun as an instrument of investigation, and proved that both looks had not deceived him. A groundhog with a tin can forced tightly down over its head was what he shot. SAMARITAN LOSES OUT, SHELBYVILLE Over-zealous to play the role of the "Good Samaritan," Harry Griffey, during a hard rain was carrying a new five dollar umbrella, a birthday present from his wife, when he noticed under the canopy of the city hall a man, his wife and small baby. Moved with compassion, Harry tendered the use of the umbrella together with his name and address. The couple promised to return the "shower stick" but up to date they have not done so.' - ' "( ROUTE FOR CAMELS. MUNCtE "The Sahara Houte" is the pet name suggested for the Indiana Union Traction company's line running from Indianapolis to Ft. Wayne, the distance of 115 miles via Muncie, Hartford City and Bluff ton will soon be traversed through "dry" territory with the single exception of the city of Anderson which may become known as the oasis of the Sahara Route. A few years ago there were enough saloons along the same line to justify calling It the "Amazon Route." FIGHT FOR FENCE. KOKOMO Despite it's being dubbed a "stable yard," and the protests of habitual loungers, the county commissioners are determined that the newly erected fence around the court house here shall not be removed. They have instructed the custodian to keep a close watch for any meddlers.

MULES FIGHT WITH FLIES. COLUMBUS When Miss LUlian Bloomstock, bookkeeper in a local garage was disturbed by an unusual noise, she looked up just In time to see a runaway team of mules bitched to a gravel wagon plunge through the plate glass windows. Vicious flys were responsible for the runaway. SQUIRREL CHANGES COLOR. LAWRENCEBURG Two squirrels of unusual and widely different color were shot in the same tree near here by the Rev. Fred W. Shuller. One was a large Albino fox squirrel and the other a bright red with a white tail.

19 years during which time they had not seen each other. Crlss returned horn on the, interurban. CONSCIENCE BITTEN. VINCENNES John Bays' conscience has returned him to Michigan City where be violated bis parole. Bays served three years for stealing a gallon of whiskey, was paroled, became intoxicated and failed to report. His conscience hurt him so bad that he gave himself up to the police. He may later be pardoned.

NEW PARIS

Thomas L. Brawley, who has been in Reid hospital, Richmond for several weeks was removed to her home Friday, much improved, but not entirely well. He underwent an operation for appendicitis. 4 Two candidates will be initiated tonight at the meeting of the Daughters of Rebekah. The lodge will open at 7 o'clock. Following the work a social time will be spent and refreshments served. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Samuels and dayghter, Grace, have joined Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Wrenn in camp south of town, and will spend the summer there. Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Wynd and son Robert of Hamilton, came Friday for a two weeks visit with Mrs. Wynd's parents, ' Mr. and Mrs. Howard Brandenburg.
