She Loves Baseball and Plays the Game

Miss Olive Thomas, as she appears in a Yankee uniform when practicing at the Polo Grounds, New York. She is a daily visitor during the time the Yanks play at home. Anyone who will" go out to the Polo Grounds any day that the Yankees are scheduled to play, and go early enough, he will be treated to the surprise of seeing a real live lady player cavorting about the field in uniform and practicing with the lads who rally around Wild Bill Donovan. Miss Olive Thomas is her name, but baseballing is not - her, regular profession. Sh , come closer, Miss Thomas is a real live you've guessed it actress, and she plays the national games just for pastime, al60, no doubt, for a bit of publicity. . But, be that as it may, Miss Thomas makes, a bewitching figure in her natty little Yankee uniform, "and the boys really like to practice with her. They say that she has the makings of a good player, and as for form well, she is just eighteen and very, very pretty.

ITALIANS TAKE STRONG PASSES IN MOUNTAIN

Alpine Troops Storm Supposedly Impregnable Position Commanding Summit of Falzarego Pass. BY BRIXTON D. ALLAIRE. . ROME, ' July 16. Battling nearly seven thousand feet above the sea level, a detachment of Italian-Alpine troops has surprised the Austrians holding the summit of Falzarego pass, a supposedly ., impregnable position, and captured it. This information is contained in an official statement given out by the Italian general staff. The text of the general staff's statement follows: "A detachment of our Infantry succeeded in scaling the slopes of a ravine heretofore considered inaccessible, and occupied by a surprise attack the summit of Falzarego pass. On the night of July 13-14 this detachment was counter attacked by the Austrians, but the enemy was repulsed, sustaining serious losses." Fight In Tyrol. It is reported from Bologna, the headquarters of the general staff, that both infantry and artillery duels are in progress on the Tyrolese frontier. Premier Salandra left Rome for the front last night to hold a confeence with King Victor Emmanuel. The newspaper Ideal Nazionale says that negotiations for a final agreement between Bulgaria and Roumania are taking place here. Mr. Stanchion, the Bulgarian minister to Italy, is holding daily conferences with Prince Ghika, the Roumanian envoy. On Thursday Mr. Stanchioff visited Baron Sonaino. the Italian foreign minister, and the two conferred for some time. TRAWLER BLOWN UP. CALLAIS, July 16. CLIFF BALE AUTO CLUB READY TO OPEN DOORS FOR GENERAL PATRONAGE

With the completion of extettsiveimprovements and alterations, th Cliff Dale Auto club bouse will be Informally opened .sometime during the week of July 26, it was announced today by Lou Emmons, promoter of the club. Only a few finishing touches are required before the doors of the club house wiu be thrown open to its patrons. Dinner will be served, and music with dancing will be the features of the opening program, the exact date of which will be set later. Hundreds of persons are expected to attend the opening event. The Cliff Dale Auto club is the only one of its kind in this section of Indiana and Ohio. It is affiliated with the Indianapolis and Cincinnati Motor clubs but it is not an exclusive organization opened only to members of auto clubs or owners of motor cars. I Instead it is more liberal in its patronage and ladies and gentlemen seeking diversion will be welcome at all times. Location ef Club. The club house is Ideally situated, opposite Cedar Springs Hotel, Ohio, cn a hill which affords a view into two states and three counties. Surrounded by distant hills, woods and meadows, the scenery on all sides of the club house is picturesque and readily summons expressions of delight and wonder from all who visit the place. It Is accessible on the traction cars by the Westville-New Paris line and by motor car by the Weetville-New Paris pike. It is within easy reach of Richmond, Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and innumerable other cities. The club house is the old Halderman homestead. Its original architecture and construction together -with the improvements which have been made during the past winter and spring, fit it unusually well for Its future use. Place for Autos. A parking place at the foot of the sloping hill to the club house has been set for automobiles and vehicles and, on the opposite side of the road, two ' tennis-courts will be made. The path to the top of the knoll and the auto park has been lined off with large boulders. In time, flower beds will be made on the side of the hill. The club house itself is large, roomy and convenient. A' veranda, eight feet wide has been constructed nearly around the structure. ' The sides of the uncovered porch are about three feet in height and on these seven or eight one hundred candle-power lights have beea mount ed. The veranda offers a splendid opportunity for dancing. Unusually AUTO HELPS KEEP BOYS AND GIRLS CONTENT ON FARM An investigation by Farm Life, covering seven counties in Southwestern Indiana, shows that twice as many cars are being sold this year as last; and that about 75 per cent of the machines going out this season are being sold to farmers. Farm Life declares that not only are average farmers buying machines, but that every fourth or fifth man interviewed, if he had no car, is planning to buy one this year or next if his crops and his live stock ventures turn out according to his reasonable hopes. This unusual investment is attributed by Farm Life largely to the decrease in the price of machines, and the need felt by the farmer for a time-saving and pleasure-giving vehicle. In no instance was it found that the farmers neglected their flocks and fields to go joy riding; on the contrary, the machine owners were prosperous and happy. A machine helps to keep the boys and girls on the farm, it does away with the loneliness of rural life by making a suburbanite of its owner, and puts the town and the country in closer touch, both in a social and a busines way. Already engagements hare been made for dinner parties. One of these is for a total list of one hundred guests, two for sixty and one for forty guests. Luncheon and dinner will be served to visitors for a reasonable charge. Members, only, however will be given a reduction in the price of meals. The roster of the club already contains the names of more than five hundred members and the list is growing daily. Before the end of the season a thousand persons are expected to be affiliated with the association. To make the club, financially, a profitable enterprise, has been practically the least of the motives which prompted its establishment. The organization of the club and erection of a suitable recreation resort for motorists and visitors was decided upon as almost a necessity for this section of Indiana and Ohio. Based upon this foundation and in view of all that has been done to complete the accomplishment, its success is assured in the estimation of those who have knowledge of the facts.
