FIGHT FOR BRICKFIELDS WAGED WITH DIG LOSS

Private Narrates How One Tommy Lost His Teeth and Blamed the Teutons for Loss.

Guards Regiment Leads the Charge When Artillery Fire Sweeps Clean Position of German Defenders.

LONDON. July 16. Here Is an account of the "struggle for the brickfields," contained in a letter' home of an officer now at the front: - "Our fellows gave the ? Germans something to think about at the now famous brickfields a few days ago. It was a hot fight for the enemy while It lasted, this piece of ground has been a bote of contention for a long time, and much fighting ha? gone on here. The enemy held it and got Wrongly entrenched there, but we finally decided that they had been there long enough, so It was decided they must get the order of the boot, sr rather bayonet. "At a certain hour our guns consentrated on this piece of ground for about 20 Minutes. It was an inferno, shells continually bursting; the smoke and noise, not to mention the slaughter, was dreadful.- Then, to a second, every gun ceased fire, and a Guards regiment took their sign from the cessation of the artillery fire; up they sprang from their trenches, bayonets fixed; simply aching for the fight. Dash on to Death, "There was no holding them back; on they dashed to the enemy's trenches, and a fine fight resulted. All the remaining Germans were kill-

SO DECEPTIVE

Many Richmond People Fall to Realize the Seriousness. Backache is so deceptive. It comes and goes keeps you guessing. Learn the cause then cure it. Possibly it's weak kidneys. That's why Doan's Kidney Pills are so effective. They're especially for weak or disordered kidneys. Here's a Richmond case: Frank Case, 11 South Third street, Richmond, says: "I had kidney trouble and backache and it was hard for me t- straighten after stooping. The action of my kidneys was irregular and annoyed me greatly. Doan's Kidney Pills strengthened my kidneys in a short time and stopped the aches ar.d pains." Price 50c, at all dealers. ed except a few who were taken piisoners. Not only did we regain the disputed bit of ground, but we gained some more; it was quite a successful -day's work. ' "I am told that one of the prisoners said the slaughter was appalling, and the noise was so great that no orders could be heard, so everything was confusion. The accuracy of our gunners amazed him. "One incident was rather amusing: One of our Tommies, in the excitement of the charge, lost his false teeth; he was frightfully "fed up" about it; he is reported to have said: 'Them 'bastes' of German would take the bit out of me mouth, they would." I can't vouch for the truth of this, but I was told it on good authority. It sounds a trifle Irish, doesnt it? Medics Wash Clothing. "The field ambulances are really wonderful the way they adapt themselves to circumstances. In one of the divisions, one of the field ambulances was given orders to start at once a laundry for washing the men's clothes of the division. "This must have been a bit of a problem for medics, I should think, but they didn't mind a bit. They are really a fine hard-working lot; I shouldn't like their work, but all that sort of thing seems all in the day's work to them. "The other day as I was riding along, I saw a certain Scottish regiment playing leap-frog just like a lot of merry school boys. Their regiment was resting. It was a weird sight to see them so thoroughly

happy; you could hardy belief that a few days previously they had been facing death. . Ohi..v. keep up our spirits all right, never fear. "The padres out here work like niggers and take such an interest in the men; they start reading rooms for them, organize concerts, censor letters, and all sorts of other, things. At the same time they are always at work holding services, I have come across several of them, and I must say have a great respect for them."

PARK TO PROSECUTE FISHERS AT MORTON

"No fishing allowed" at Morton lake means "no fishing." Fishermen who persist in swarming along the banks of the water despite repeated orders to stay out were given final warning last night by the board of directors. The board instructed Secretary Haas to obtain the services of a legal firm to prosecute all persons caught fishing. The park watchman will give no more warnings, but will turn the names of offenders over to the attorneys who will start legal proceedings. The company is considering the employment of a caretaker to take the place of Ben Engelbert, who resigned yesterday to accept another position.
