Our Automobile Bill On June 30 there were 81,608 automobiles under license in the state, a gain of 26,608 over the same period of 1914. Already there are 15,000 more registrations than there were during the whole of last year, and it is possible that licenses for nearly 100,000 motor cars will be issued before January 1, 1916. Fees collected already t.his year amount to half a million dollars. A large part of this sum will be distributed among the various "counties for road improvement work. It is natural that there should be a remarkable increase in the number of motor vehicles owned by citizens of Indiana. In the state there are at least 600 dealers, and in Ind

ianapolis, Kokomo, South Bend, Anderson. Muncie, Connersville and elsewhere there are manufacturing plants which, while serving the general market, inevitably tend to increase the local demand for cars. Trade has been depressed in some lines, and in others it has developed. The automobile industry has been strangely affected. The war has operated to strengthen some concerns, and to ruin others. The truck factories have been busy with European orders. Some touring car companies enjoying much export business have been compelled to retrench or to seek new fields. One reason for the rapid increase in automobiles in Indiana has been the reduction in price. The more numerous machines become the more business is affected, and some lines, especially those of specialty and service, are certain to profit. On June 1, according to a recent issue of the Scientific American, the number of automobiles in the United States for the first time reached I 2,000,000. To run 2,000,000 cars for one year requires at least 1,000,000,000 gallons of gasoline, worth $130,000,000; 20,000,000 gallons of lubricating oil, worth $8,000,000; 12,000,000 tires, worth $192,000,000; accessories to the value of $100,000,000, and garage and repair items amounting to $300,000,000. On this basis, we may get some idea of the cost of 80,000 automobiles to the people of this state for just one year. Indianapolis News.

Asks Co-operation for Health Survey

BY OR. D. W.-DENNIS. A health survey of the city of Richmond is now well under way; an expert paid by the government is performing the service. This is free to the city; citizens of the city are providing for the local expenses of the survey. There is absolutely no compulsion about it; no law requires it; citizens who know the values of the survey invited the government to db the work; it is of prime importance that this (1) locate the consumptive cases existing in the city; (2) it must locate the houses in which the cases are; (3) we ought to know every house in which consumption has been fatal in the past if possible and how many cases it has furnished; (4) we ought to thave much other information which only the citizens can give. It is his part to ask this information; it is ours to answer this correctly and fully. Who will be helped by this information? Everybody in Richmond. We will be helped by it and our children to the last generation or at least for a 100 years or untitl consumption itself disappears. Who can be helped most by it? The consumptive himself; he may get well; his family next; they may be prevented from dicing two years or later from the same disease; then those who clerk with the consumptives in the same store, or work with him in the same shop or factory or counting house. Everybody who catches consumption catches it from some other person or cow or poodle or cat or sme other thing that is alive or from a house that has been affected. Are we not all interested in this man's work? Only one other man can touch us as vitally as he if we have or may have consumption, namely our trusted family doctor. Are we too poor to do anything? Not if we can talk and tell this man

when he comes whatever he may ask about diseases of every kind. Are we too proud or rich or busy to give out this information? When we catch the consumption we will have plenty of leisure. We ought to run to help this sanitary expert who is the best friend of all of us, who knows the secret of life and health and happiness as we can not. He is not hunting culprits to punish and harm them but sick men to make taem well and well men to keep them well. It is a well-established fact that whole wheat flour is more nourishing and more economical than white flour.
