When the World Was New The world is biggest when we are young enough to conceive of the pasture as an empire and the city. block as a republic- Time is longest when we are young enough to see a day as an epoch, a week as an era, a summer vacation by seaside or lake shore as eternity itself. As we grow older the world grows smaller,, and so does time. Space and time are nothing for boy or man save as he holds measures for them in hand or in memory. The boy understands ten feet because that is three long strides, and ten years because he has just lived them. Now we have lived another ten and yet another; but the first ten were the longest and are the truest measure,

RELIGION NECESSARY FOR RAILROAD MEN

The seriousness of their duties 'as railroad employes in having the lives of passengers In their care and the importance and 'worth of their, organizations, was pointed out to the members of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Brotherhood of Railway Cnductors and the Ladies Auxiliary to the railroad trainmen, in an Interesting sermon by Rev. E. E. Davis at the Second Presbyterian church last night. The pastor also discussed the need of obtaining the best religion, which he said was of paramount Importance. A true and genuine life was urged through the close observation of the commands of Christ, the greatest exponent of Christianity. CARL SMITH DROWNS IN GRAVEL PIT HOLE

WILLIAMSBURG, Ind., June 28. Carl Smith, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, was drowned in the gravel pit of OUie Scantland, two miles northwest of here, when he was attacked by cramps while wading in the pond with five companions yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. His body was recovered by Brazil Cates. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 o'clock at Morgan's chapel, the Rev. Logan Hunt officiating. Young Smith and his companions were wading in the pit when he stepped into a hole twenty feet deep and was attacked by cramps. His companions were unable to help him, and Cates was required to dive several times to recover the body.

for the more years we 'are granted the more scornful of the gift we grow, though the more insistent, too, in our demand for more. But it was in that first decade, or soon after its ending, that we conceived Antiquity : which is a mere idea, like any other. A century was then ten times our life not two or three times it, as today. A century is no great matter now ; we know men whose cramped existence has equaled a century, or nearly that ; and they are only ghosts of men. Our teachers did better than they knew when they taught us Greek or Roman history before they told us of the Norman conquest and the Magna Charta, the Bill of Rights and the French and Indian War, the Declaration of Independence and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. We were not grateful then now we thank them, kneeling. For Rome was founded when we began Roman history, as Mrs. Meynell has has written: -"and that is why it seems so long ago. By learning something of antiquity in the first ten years, the child enlarges the sense of time for all mankind. A child is beset with long traditions." What year in our matured life, spent in planning conquests of mind or spirit, or treading the daily mill of sense-deadening

routine, is naif so long as some days or - our

boyhood, when morning was a spuh-out agony of duties protracted, and afternoon a mystically crammed cycle of sport and adventure, and the mere moment of falling asleep an immeasurable bridge between the world we live in and the uncharted Wonderland grown-ups have forgotten? Collier's Weekly.

G. G. RICHMOND. If dumb animals and the ignorant savage follow their natural instinct and use herbs to cure their ills, is it not a proof that it is nature's way? Many of us have seen our friends, the dog eat grass when he needs medicine. Our feline friend, the cat when sick will search the fields for catnip and why should not we search nature's laboratories to cure our ills. Herbal Lax-a-Tone is a result ef a scientific blending together of roots, barks, blossoms, berries and leaves. Mr. Richmond, a popular railroad man who lives at 552 Eastern avenue, Toledo, says: "I have suffered with stomach trouble a great , many year3 and could find no relief, and at last resorted to Herbal Lax-a-Tone and its effects have been wonderful, and I can heartily endorse it for stomach trouble, and to any one needing a good tonic and appetizer.
