t SONG ON MAII'S UPS SHOWS JOY OF LIFE
About "The Man Who Sings," the Rev. W. O. Stovall, pastor of the First Baptist church, said in part yesterday; "There is something delightful about
the man who sings. It means that his soul is free. We like' to have him around. His song may not be melodious in the artistic sense, but he is a dispenser of cheerfulness. There is is a music that is melodious to the heart, thought it may not be very melodious to the ear. . Sound is a physical thing. Physical deices and endowments are required to produce it in a pleasing manner. But the sentiment and the associations of the song may speak to the heart though the musical effort be crude. "At work or at play when the pressure of the task or the zest of the game subsides and the mind drops back into its natural mood, blessed is the man whose soul spontaneously springs the song. It is not the song he forces himself to sing to give face to ' artificial conditions like the boy whistling in the dark, but the song that comes naturally from a free and buoy- ' ant spirit like that of the bird that has escaped from, the cage and trills its joy from the tree top in God's open air and sunshine."
CARNIVAL COMPANY " BAUDS TO PARADE
The Mazeppa United Shows, assert
ed to be the largest and most complete carnival which ever appeared In this I
city, arrived in Richmond Sunday for, a week's engagement The tents were; erected on the Jot Just west of the Doran bridge in West Richmond and today workmen were occupied in finishing arrangements to handle the large crowd of people expected this evening. :v -S . The ground - had been cleared and leveled to permit of the easy accessibility to the shows. .The ferrls wheel, merry-go-round and ' all of. the other concessions, were erected today. The carnival comprises thirteen shows besides the concesssions and the two free-acts which will be given daily. . :. Each day this week a street parade will be held including the two bands of music which accompany the shows. Whether the trained horse, "Mazeppa" is brought to Richmond to appear at the carnival is problematical. His owner, who lives in Columbus, Ohio, and who has the horse insured for $30,000 uses extreme care in having the horse perform. If the present weather continues, the horse may be brought here for the last two days of the week.
