ROME, June 25. Official denial was issued today by the Italian government of the charges alleged to have been made by Pope Benedict XV in an interview with a French journalist, that the Italian censor had opened mail addressed to the Vatican. At the same time the Osservatore Romano, official organ of the Vatican, published a statement saying that a distinction should be drawn between public documents and private conversations., "With regard to the present war," says the Osservatore Romano, "the holy father's statement was expressed in. the encyclical of November 1, the Christmas address to the sacred college, the Consistorial Allocation January 22, and many letters. "While the pope assumes full responsibility for the documents, he disavows connection with a publication like the last one, containing incorrect statements, which are so evident as to render a denial superflous." Among the Italians who are heart and soul for war, the statement of the Osservatore Romano caused deep disappointment, because they had expected a strong denial and condemna
tion of the contents of the interview printed by the Paris newspaper, La Libert e.
The Italian government's statement
in reference to the charge, of interference with the Vatican mail said : "Since the opening of hostilities every care has been exercised to enable the pontiff to correspond freely with
his bishops of the Catholic world. Ofi hundreds of letters received and outsent by the holy see only two coming
fro ma war zone were opened by mistake. The censor was instructed to pass them unopened.
