FATHERS INSPIRE LOVE If CHILDREN'S HEARTS
Edgar Hiff Shows Injustice cf Parent's Attitude Calculated to Create : Awe and Obedience.
Describes Grief of Family and Yearning of Soft Caresses of Child Departed From Earth.
BY EDGAR ILIFF. Sitting under a sycamore tree near my tent on a summer's morn, trying to read a little volume of selected essays from Montaigne, my thoughts fly hither and thither. One moment I am attracted from the book to the flash of a redbird's plumage, and am cheered by his martial note. , Then 1 stop to listen to . the cawing of a convention of crows on a. rail fence over ! the river. ' They seem to '- be - holding ! either an election or a trial. On one side the Judges in. sable 'garb sit silently and soberly. There are angry disputes among the members. . Finally the whole assembly arises and in a black cloud falls upon one lone crow, and claw, bite and flop - him almost to death. Then the convention breaks
and flies away and leaves the culprit
lying on the ground, perhaps dead.
No, he is not dead, for he walks feebly
to a bush and crawls from sight.
But Montaigne. His most' beautiful
essay, written about 1560, is named,
"On the Affection of Fathers for Their Children." and its best utterance is
this: Show Tender Side.
"It Is folly and injustice to deprive children of a familiarity with their father and to carry a scornful and au
stere countenance toward them, think'
in by that to keep them in awe and
obedience; for it is. a very idle force, that instead of producing the effect
designed, renders fathers distasteful;
and. which is worse, ridiculous to their
children. They have youth and vigor
in possession, and, consequently, tne breadth and favor of the world, and therefore receive these fierce and determined looks (mere scarecrows) of a man without blood either in his heart or veins, with mockery and contempt. ; I condemn all violence In the educai tion of a tender soul that Is designed for honor and liberty. There is I know not what of the servile In rigor and restraint, and I am of the opinion that what is not to be done by reason, prudence and address Is never effected by force. The Mareschal de Monluc, who lost a brave and hopeful son, confessed to me that he was heartbroken because he never unbent to that son. 'That poor boy,' he said, 'never saw me in any other than a stern and disdainful countenance, and is gone in a belief that I never knew how to love and esteem him according to his desert." The true reader of Montaigne can almost see his tears when he writes in comment upon the heartbroken father: "There is no consolation so sweet in the loss of child or friend as the consciousness of having had no reserve of secret from them and

I attended the funeral of a beautiful.
God-like boy once. The parents were
Inconsolable. The circumstances of
the child's death were terrible. . Diph
theria had done its silent and awful work. -No others were there except
the parents, the minister and myself. I felt so deeply for the stricken moth
er and father that I wished the minister would offer them something that might soothe and comfort them. So when he, in straight and stiff black
clericalism, opened his Bible, I er
pected he would read some beautiful passage winnowed from that great mass of harsh, crude and terrible things mixed with noble and tender thoughts. But I was sorely disappointed. He read from Revelations a description of heaven, its walls made
of sapphire and jasper, its streets
paved with shining gold, and in the center a dazzling throne, where sat the elders in stiff, starched robes, and
from which place came trumpet blares, fanfares and hideous toots and great
blinding sheets of lightning. He read
of creatures having eyes before and
behind, of lions, calves and eagles; creatures strange and weird, sixwinged, million-eyed, never-sleeping, and so on and so on to the limit of the terrible and grotesque. j Yearns for Child. I grew sick and Indignant. I said to .myself, what does this stricken father care for golden streets and diamond-studded walls? He yearns for the soft, warm cheek of his boy against his. own. And this little boy, Hector's son, with a head like a star so beautiful it was well, if he goes up there. among such a conglomeration of monstrosities he will, like the
"Babes in the Woods," call for his dear mamma. And she would rather cuddle him up to her warm heart in the meanest hut than own all the dazzling throne; she would rather hold him in her loving arms than think of him a total stranger among million-eyed things with long-bearded elders in nightgowns and diamond
crowns on their heads.
I wondered where this parson learn
ed his art of cruelty. Had he ever a
child? A rasping voice, expressionless eyes, a cold professional mannerism.
He snapped his Bible shut, and I
wished that some dear old mother in Israel might have whispered to the
parents, "Oh, dear hearts, I have suffered too." One glance, one word, one honest pressure of the hand of a real man or woman are greater than sermons, deeper than books, nobler than all professions of earth.
Conception is Roman. But this conception of a gold-naved
and glittering gemmed heaven is not
Jewish. It is Roman. The Roman was the most lustful, avaricious, greedy, brutal and materialistic human
that ever lived. Beauty to him was
shining gold, power, dazzling diamonds and Pompeiian red the glaring red which is the synonym of power, lust and cruelty. The Roman woman was at her lowest when she followed the fashion of wearing red hair taken from the heads of butchered Teuton or German mothers, wives and maidens. To the Roman the windows of heaven must have flung out red curtains and over its gold streets gorgeous chariots rumbled proudly, dragging after them the miserable heathen captives. In describing heaven, John, the revealer, must have drunk deep at the Roman spring. The most beautiful expression in all the world's literature is that heaven is childhood "of such is the kingdom of heaven." The Romans threw the physically deficient children out on the waste rocks of earth for the carrion birds to devour them, but there came a new conception into the world; it was that heaven's streets are imprinted with the pattering feet of children and its walls echo with their laughter. Their prattle and laughter make heaven a heaven independent of every creed and belief a heaven that needs no doorkeeper in St. Peter's garb a heaven which na-

AMUSEMENTS
That all the milk or human kindness has not gone out of the world, is proved in the case of pretty nineteen year old Bessie Armstrong, New Brighton, Staten Island, girl and a senior in the Curtis High school, in which, for the past month she has carried on a series of petty thefts from her companions. Miss Armstrong was apprehended in her thefts by a woman detective who was put on the case after books, clothing and several pieces of jewelry were missed by the girl students in the school room. She confessed her crimes saying she did not know why she had committed them. She had been studying very hard to pass her examinations, and had been preparing for her graduation. It is thought that the severe strain, for the time being, unbalanced her mind and lead her to steal from her school friends. Arraigned before Justice Handy she again repeated her confession and was allowed to go with a reprimand. Since then she has been in the seclusion of her parents' home, but her friends and teachers at the school have made an effort to get her to come out from her seclusion. They have even gone so far as to secure a position for her if she wishes to take it. All has been forgiven. Before being arraigned before the magistrate. Principal Daniel jFeldman of the Curtis High School, (furnished $500 ball for the girl.
