The Flag in the Heart. President Wilson in his address on Flag day - urged American citizens to remember the flag every day in the year, and not only on Flag day, and to carry the national emblem in their hearts all the time. The sentiment of the president offers food for reflection. Not for many decades has the country faced

so many delicate problems as she has in the last few months; not for many years has it been so essentially necessary for all her citizens to exemplify a high type of patriotism. The hour is here when the true patriot must come to the front. There always will be a large number of patriots who congregate on the street corners and loudly voice their sentiments. From these places emanate much of the froth and cheap sentiment that fires many into demanding from our chief

executive hasty actions on matters of great moment. These are the men who unwittingly foment a public opinion that some times influences our leaders to follow paths that lead to destruction. The president is pleading for a new type of patriot who does more thinking and less talking, the man who ponders long and hard and then deliberately and with insight gives expression to his opinion. This type of patriot has the flag enshrined in his heart. He wears it physically on Flag day and other national holidays, but he always carries it in his heart, the year around.

MODERN -AfeMY. STJB&I CAPS The photograph shows French soldiers wearing their steel skull caps in the trenches.- These steel caps have averted many an enemy bullet and are especially valuable in trench warfare, as the,y protect the head of a man peering over the trench tops from the sharpshooters of the enemy. The French government does not supply these caps as a part of a soldier's accoutrement, but most of them are the gifts of relatives and friends at home.

Editor Palladium: Please permit epace for an expression of the writer's admiration of W. J, Bryan's magnificent Individuality. His name will stand in history as a beacon light to the disciples of spiritual, political righteousness. , Crucify himx crucify him! cries the mob of corrupt political pharasees. Crucify him, crucify him! comes the hoarse vicious how from' alcoholic throats of the whiskey interests. Crucify him, crucify him! comes the

rumble and grumble and roar of vast Satanic "hordes, "echoing down, the corridors of time," from the foot of

Calvary's cross. "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me." Agreeing with Mr. Bryan, the writer asserts that it is not only a narrow citizenship but a very undesirable one that will jeopardize the country's neutrality in this miserable unchristian war to gratify self-interests. It will probably never be known how many American passengers on the Lusitania were actually paid agents to involve this government in the European war, but inductively at least, the fact is patent to any candid logical mind.

The writer heartily agrees with Mr. Bryan that it is inconsistency close akin to hypocracy for a government claiming neutrality to demand of a belligerent "strict accountability" for killing its citizens and permit shipment of war munitions intended to destroy its people. Weighed in that Christian balance of The Man of Galilee, who will be found the least culpable, the parents on the Lusitania who knowingly placed their innocent children in the very jaws of death, or the soldiers in the submarine who loyally obeyed orders of their superior officers.

Mr. Bryan's long and seemingly

fruitless fight with the Satanic forces of material unchristian soulless poli

tics, has taught him to fully realize

that his present course sounds aloud the death kneli of his political life. He well knows that the political world is as little prepared to fully accept the "Divine Spiritual Gospel today, .as on the day it nailed Christ to the cruel Roman cross. The man with the fearless courage of convictions impelling him to resign high official position and accept political death, rather than integrity of principal, will live in fame ages after his rotten critics have mouldered into lethean nothingness. President Wilson and Secretary Bryan, each from stalwart personal convictions, each from different viewpoints working along the same lines to obtain the same result the avoidance of war involvement it becomes evident that they can no longer work together in that absolute harmony necessary at this crisis of our government; the secretary nobly resigns be lieving that he can work more effectively to maintain peaceful honor for his country out of the cabinet than in it, so they part loyal friends; and then all heathen jingoism go off into a mighty rage. In the infinite judgement whose bu-! manity Is the broadest, chip-on-shoul-er humanity, or a humanity broadly following The Prince of Peace? If the writer, claiming to be a Christian, should condemn Mr. Bryan's course, on his tombstone in large letters should be engraved HYPOCRITE. JOSEPH M. THURSTON.

FIGHT IN GELLAFS PARIS, June 16. Some of the most desperate fighting north of Arras has taken place in the cellars of the villages captured by the French. Nearly everyone of the stone bouses in these Artois villages is provided with a large cellar, in many cases reached by a staircase from an inside courtyard. The Germans had turned these cellars into little fortresses communicating by underground passages with a trench inside the village.
