Fighting Trim
The coming of a United States surgeon to make a health survey here calls attention to the co-operation of the individual with sanitary experts in fighting disease. Surgeon J. M. Eager of the United States Public Health Service comments thus: In the defense against disease two things are necessary a systematic union of fighters, the sanitary organization, and personal preparedness, the product of intelligent and diligent personal hygiene. Personal preparedness is the
patriotic duty of every citizen as an aid to national sanitary defense. No man as a member of society is morally free to live unhygienically or to acquire disease through lack of personal care. Like a slovenly soldier, the person who neglects his health risks imparting to others his loose morale or even transmitting disease to the whole community. "Health is a man's most valuable possession. Without it he cannot hold or enjoy anything else that falls to his lot or that he wins in the battle of life. Without health he is a burden to himself and, unless he possess marked compensatory qualities, an encumbrance to his comrades." The health making attitude of mind is represented as a profitable talent and fortunately one that can be acquired. Doctor Eager calls attention to the large available mass of literature on health subiects work, exercise, relaxation,
sleep, fresh air, proper temperatures, food, cooking, cleanliness, etc., that should be judiciously selected and studied. Every person must learn for himself what peril threatens in his special
place in life.
Studies of health subjects in schools and
clubs, its exposition in public lectures, newspaper articles, and bulletins, have the salutary tendency, it is stated, to promote wholesome practices as an habitual exercise and develop the precious quality of automatically choosing in every action and habit of life those courses that conduce to bodily soundness.
Impressive Memorial Dates Back to Greeks
BY EDGAR ILIFF. Mrs. D. M. Jordan, whose soul was full of poetry, and whose band and heart were always open to the "Boys In Blue," once wrote this beautiful stanza in a poem ou "Soldiers' Graves": "Above their dreamless slumber, in The low tents where summer winds Stir not the heavy curtains, and at Whose doors the snowy symbol of a Truce is set, we walk with reverent Tread. No more the loud alarm or Bugle call shall rouse them to the charge." It is interesting to know that our customs are deep-rooted and date back to the very childhood of the world. We love to feel that we are related to
all the brave that have gone before,
there he drew water from the fountain, washed with his own hands the columns of the tombs, rubbed them afterward with perfumed essences, and then killed the black bull upon a pile of wood prepared for the purpose. After having offered up prayers to Jupiter and Mercury he invited the valiant souls below to arise to their feet and partake of the funeral libations. Then taking a cup in Ms hand, having filled It with wine, he poured it out on the ground and said with a
loud voice, "I present this cup to those who died for liberty." Many wept. And thus every year they pronounced solemn panegyrics over the graves of those who gave their lives for the
perpetuation of such liberties as make

TEACHERS JUST WORK, GRADE TEST PAPERS AND HEAR' LECTURES
The following from the Philadelphia Bulletin has been submitted by a local teacher: A school teacher is a person who teaches things to people when they are young. The teacher comes to school at 8:30 o'clock, and when she has gotten enough children for a mess in her room she teaches them reading, writing, geography, grammar, arithmetic, music, drawing, cooking, board sawing, crocheting, deep breathing, bird calls, scientific eating, patriotism, plain and fancy bathing, forestry, civics and other sciences too numerous to mention. When school is out she stays behind with five or six of her worst scholars and tries to save the state the job of reforming them later on. After that she hurries home to make herself a new dress and snatch a hasty supper before going back to attend a lecture by an imported specialist on the history of tribal law in Patagonia, which the superintendent thinks may give her some information which may be useful in her school work some day. A groat many lecturers roam the country praying on school teachers, and some of them are very cruel, talking to them so long that the poor things have to sit up until niorninis, when they gc-t home to get their test papers corrected. School teachers' salaries range from $30 a month up but not far enough up to muko them dizzy. On her salary the teacher must dress nicely, buy herself things for her work which the city is too poor to gst, go to twenty-nine lectures and concerts a year, buy helpful books on pedagogy, pay her way to district, county and state institutes, and enjoy herself during a three months' vacation which her fcalary takes every year. In addition, the teacher is supposed to hoard away vast sums of money, so that when she becomes too nervous and cross to teach, at the age of fifty or thereabouts, she can retire and live happily ever after on her income.

For quick, positive relief from constipation, sour stomach, biliousness, inactive liver, bad breath, and all the ills that follow them nothing as yet has been found to quite equal that old, time-tried compound of may-apple root, aloes and jalap. Recognized as one of the standard remedies, physicians daily prescribe it, many preferring it to all others, and especially calomel. They like it because, being purely vegetable, it's not nearly as harsh as calomel; it never gripes; is never followed by any of the dangerous after-effects that so often result from the use of calomel. This standard remedy, readyprepared, may now be had under the name of Sentanel Laxative Tablets. Be sure you get the original Sentanel Laxatives, put up in the box that has the picture of the soldier on it. In this form it is much more convenient and easier to take than in the old-fashioned powder or capsule form cheaper, too; a 10c box of Sentanels should last one several weeks. A physician's sample package (4 doses) free to any one answering this advertisement. The Sentanel Remedies Co., 801 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky.
