"A Man and His Wife"

John Takes Isabel Home in a Taxi at the Behest of Their Hostess.

WOMAN'S SUFFRAGE may eventually give to women rights to which they are entitled, but good health, which is the birthright of every American woman, must be hers before she can fully enjoy the privileges which woman's " suffrage will bring. Women who suffer from those dreadful pains, backache, headaches, irritability, nervousness and depression, symptoms of organic trouble, should rely on Lydia K. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, which is made from roots and herbs, to restore them to a normal healthy condition as it has thousands of other American women. Adv.

By Virginia Terhune Van de Water. CHAPTER XIX. Copyright, 1915, Star Company. "Of course you are going to take a taxi. Jack," said Mrs. Simmons, as John and Isabel Hamilton appeared in the hall, ready for departure. John shook his head. "Oh, no," he replied. "We don c need a cab now. It's stopped raining." "That makes no difference," asserted Adelaide. "Your wife had a bad fall on her way here, and it's still very slippery. You go there to the phone and order a cab, like a sensible man." John laughed as if humoring a delightful child. But he did as he was bid. "It's more economical," Adelaide told him, "to spend a little money on a cab than to ruin one's clothes. My dear," turning to Isabel and lowering her voice, "you ought to take this kind of thing for granted in de:..ing with your husband. Men are thoughtless creatures at best, and since Jack did not propose bringing you here in a cab you should have suggested it yourself." Isabel's pride prevented her confiding to her hostess that she had vainly urged John to dj this very thing. It had required but a word from Mrs. Simmons to produce the result that his wife's request had failed to effect. "Well," said John ten minutes later as he seated himself by Isabel's side in the taxi that was to convey them home, "wasn't it a jolly evening?" As Isabel did not answer immediately, he changed the form of his question. "You had a good time, didn't you?" he asked. "Not especial," she replied. "I was conscious all the time of my soiled dress, riy torn glove and of the pain in my swollen hand. Besides" She checked the sentence that would have sprung to her lips, but her husband looked at her inquiringly. "What were you going to say?" he demanded. "You began with 'besides,' what was the rest?" "I don't think I care to say," she demurred. "But I wish you to tell me," he persisted. "What was the drawback

to your pleasure besides the injuries to your dress and hand?" "They by themselves vere eaough to spoil my evening," she evaded. "You made a good deal of fuss about them," John said, a ring of annoyance in his voice. "It would have been better taste if you had kept silent about them especially as I have done all I could to avoid a reptition of the accident by bringing you home in a cab." "And why did you do it?" Isabel turned upon him accusingly. "Just because Mrs. Simmons told you to not because I wanted it. Hours ago, when it was pouring rain and I asked you to let me ride to a place to which I was going because you 'wanted to go you refused. Now, when the rain is over and we could walk home with comparative ease, another woman tells you to go to the phone and order a taxi, and you obey , her meekly." She stopped, catching her breath in her excitement. "Well I'll be darned!" exclaimed the man. He gave a short laugh. "That's the way with a woman so jealous that she can't see another woman's kind-heartedness. Why do you suppose Adelaide suggested my ordering tbis cab? What good did it do her? Her only idea was to make things comfortable for you. Yet you resent her well-meant efforts as interference." "Yes, .1 do," Isabel acknowledged, "for that is what they were. As your wife, I might be supposed to be the one to suggest your getting a cab for me. But no, when M.S. Simmons is around I must take my place in the background and allow her to direct you and command you as if her claim was superior to mine. Even past friendship does not warrant such liberties." She had not meant to say as much as this. Perhaps the punch had excited her unduly and given her a courage that was not all her own. Her rusband shrugged his shoulders. "When you are less excited," he remarked calmly, "you may talk more sanely, Isabel. I suppose there never yet was a wife who did another woman justice. Adelaide gave this little party in our honor; she treated you courteously and cordially; and yet you turn against her just because she

showed a kindly interest in your welfare and because she happens to be an old friend of mine. She has always behaved in that unconventional way with her men friends, and it means nothing." "Well, it's mighty disagreeable for the men's wives." Isabel asserted. "But be that as it may, the fact remains that you did exactly what she told you." "I could hardly do leBS in her house," John reproved. Why was he so calm, and why did he manifest so much less temper than usual when arguing? His wife wondered. Was it because the highballs he had imbibed had benumbed his wits, or had he determined not to break off all intercourse between his friend and his wife by quarreling with the latter about the former? He Tries to Praise the People at the Party. Perhaps both these influences were at work. Certain it is that John Hamilton dropped the subject as soon as possible and began to talk of the party itself. . "Jolly people there, weren't there?" he observed. "I noticed that you seemed to be having a good time drinking punch with Dennis and Duval. I don't care for Dennis myself though you appear to like him but Duval is a nice sort of chap." "He seems to be nice," Isabel agreed meekly. It was true that she had taken punch with these men and had laughed and chatted with them, carefully concealing the distaste she felt for her hostess and surroundings. Could she then consistently complain of the evening's entertainment? Since she had pretended to be having a pleasant time she could not prove to John that she had been uncomfortable. Her change of tone had a softening

effect on her husband. He laid his hand on hers. "I am sorry, dear," he sympathized, "that you soiled your gown and tore your glove, and still more sorry that you sprained your poor little band. I will pay for a new pair of gloves and for having the dress cleaned. You were right, dear, when you said that

it is more economical to ride than to walk on a stormy night." So conciliatory was his manner that Isabel did not call his attention to the fact that it was not she, but Adelaide, who had made the statement which be quoted. ' To Be Continued.
