BRITISH ABANDON IDEA OF RECAPTURING POINTS LOST IN WEST FLANDERS NEAR YPRES
BY HERBERT TEMPLE
European Manager of the Internation-
a I News Service. LONDON", May 6. Preparations are being made by the Germans for a Krand assault against the British and French troops defending Ypres ia West Flanders. The German aeneral
staff Is pouring troops into Belgium, and great quantities of artillery art
nemg massed on the West Flanders front to support the infantry. Six troop trains bearing first lin soldiers passed through Antwerp ia the direction of Dixmude on Tuesday. On Sunday 15.000 German soldiera that had been in training in the Hasselt district of Belgium were moved westward toward the Dixmude-Ypres front. The indications are that the Germans have decided to try for another decisive drive against the French
coast, first delivering a series of smashing blows against the Ypres and Dixmude fronts. That the British have abandoned any idea of trying to retake their lost positions in West Flanders north and northward of Ypres 1b show by the official announcement that the lines have been reformed to the. westward of the territory lost to the Germans. The new British lines which now lie west of Zonnebeke. are
being. 6trongly fortified. .Zonnebeke is 4b6ut fourteen miles northeast of Ypres and two miles southeast of St. Jullea, The Germans have taken up strong positions on elevated ground dominating Zonnebeke where they have mounted artillery to sweep the town. The importance of the capture of Zonnebeke and four other minor positions in west Flanders bv the Germans ia minimized by British artillery experts.
